Abbot in the Trees

I'm not sure anyone could guess where this shot was taken from... I had been driving up Atlantic Avenue heading to Shubies on September 26, 2015 when I noticed Abbot Hall jutting out over a canopy of trees. I had my camera in the car as I had just been shooting elsewhere and stopped to capture this unique view of Abbot in the trees. It almost appears as though the building lies in a forest somewhere.

Moon over the Regiment

On July 11, 2014, I lucked out when out to capture the full moon with Glover's Regiment having set up for their annual encampment at Fort Sewall. I stood across the way from them and composed this image of the Regiment standing at attention under the light of a full moon. Moments later, they fired several volleys over the harbor which would lead to a favorite image that was shared the next day. This one got relegated to the 'to be published' folder instead.

Amby’s Bop

We had thick fog enveloping Marblehead on July 21, 2014 and I decided to head over to Beacon Street to see what images awaited with boats moored in the smaller harbor. I happened upon one boat named Amby's Bop and decided to capture it with only the faintest outline of Brown's Island visible in the distance. Imagine my surprise when I zoomed in later and found the photographer Ulrike Welsch's name and number written inside the boat's hull.

From the Shores of the Neck

On July 22, 2015, I headed across the causeway to Marblehead Neck and then ventured down to the beach from atop Corinthian Lane. I stopped at this point as the sunset had reached its maximum (a bit less than expected/hoped) and composed this image of a pier with the flag waving in the wind and a crescent moon overhead.

Marblehead Fireworks Show

By |2019-07-03T15:30:12-04:00July 4th, 2019|Categories: Fireworks|Tags: , |

I missed the Marblehead fireworks show for the first time since moving here in 2008 and hope everyone enjoyed what I'm sure was a great show. Following up on Wednesday's post of the harbor illumination is this image of the fireworks display from 2015 and my favorite vantage point - a friend's cupola on the Neck. We were invited over for the day and I made sure to bring my camera and tripod. Shortly after arriving, I checked out their cupola and found the perfect composition. I ended up biking over to Corinthian Lane for the harbor illumination and then [...]

Marblehead Fourth

This will be the first year since moving to Marblehead that I will miss the annual fireworks show. With that in mind, I thought I would share an image from last year's show that was years in the making and ended up offering me a completely new prospective on a Marblehead Fourth of July celebration. I purchased my drone several years ago and, shortly thereafter, obtained my drone pilot license for commercial photography. It was then that I realized what hurdles I would need to pass in order to realize this shot that I had envisioned. I had to devise [...]

July Fourth Harbor Illumination

By |2019-06-23T14:06:41-04:00July 3rd, 2019|Categories: Traditions, Fireworks|Tags: , , |

I've said it before but it bears repeating, my favorite part of the annual Independence Day celebration in Marblehead is the July fourth harbor illumination. In 2015, I had set up along Corinthian Lane and captured this 160 megapixel panorama of the entirety of Marblehead harbor lit with flares. The resolution on this image is incredible with 1:1 views showing people at Crocker Park! Hope you have a good spot picked out to celebrate the Fourth of July in Marblehead.

Corinthian Moonrise

By |2019-06-23T14:00:11-04:00July 2nd, 2019|Categories: moon|Tags: , , |

On September 27, 2015, I headed to the end of Ferry Lane (right next to the State Street landing) to capture the moonrise. The full harvest moon rose over Marblehead Neck appearing as a Corinthian moonrise with the yacht club just under the glowing light. I had shared a close up of the moon originally and had left this wider view in my 'To be Published' folder where it waited to see the light of day.

Doliber Sunrise

By |2019-06-23T13:59:03-04:00July 1st, 2019|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , |

On July 1, 2015, I headed out to Doliber Cove at sunrise hoping for a solid showing. I arrived just after 5am and found perfect cloud cover from this spot along Beacon Street from which I composed this panorama to encompass the whole of Doliber Cove, Grace Oliver Beach and Brown's Island.  I lucked out with this 'Doliber sunrise' and shared one image from the shoot as soon as I returned home. This panorama took a bit more work and ended up relegated to the 'To be Published' folder for exactly 4 years as the harbor illumination and fireworks show [...]

The Bus Stop

In late 2015, I had rented an ultra wide angle lens to explore the compositional possibilities that such a lens might afford me. I ended up shooting at Chandler Hovey, Castle Rock and historic downtown Marblehead over the span of a week. On September 11, 2015, I found myself on Washington Street and capture this view of historic downtown Marblehead featuring Old Town House, She and The Bus Stop.
