Arts and Crafts at Children’s Island

After a donut and hot apple cider enjoyed inside the arts and crafts building, I looked back toward town and noted the open windows with their contrasting colors. The red, white and blue paint on the weathered wood made for a great scene as did the few open windows on that cold Fall day. I shot this at a very large aperture (f/2.8) to minimize the depth of field and focused on the nearest open door. Between that and the contrasts of color and wood, I think the photo speaks to the character of the structures on Children's Island.

Welcome to Children’s Island

On October 22nd, the YMCA held a Fall festival on Children's Island. I grabbed the kids and my camera and made my way to The Landing where the Hannah Glover ship ferried us over. There were games to be played, hay rides to take and a great island to explore. We made our way over to the Arts and Crafts cabin for a bit of hot cider, donuts and painting. Sunset over Gerry Island

The theme this week has been sunrises and sunsets and I therefore chose this photo which fit in nicely. It's another from the archive and was taken on July 4th while awaiting the fireworks display. A storm came through right before the fireworks were due to start and missed us but provided for a very intense sunset. The best view ended up being this one looking out from Fort Sewall at Gerry Island. This was taken as a 4 shot panorama. Crowninshield Road from Crowninshield Island

At the end of Crowninshield Road lies a beautiful house seemingly perched on the edge of the ocean. As I continued to explore Crowninshield Island, I looked back and noticed this view of the house and the rocks of the island in the foreground. I liked the balance it gave to the image and the perspective of Marblehead's coast.

Looking Back at our Town

After walking up the hill and reaching the top of the rocky section on Crowninshield Island, my daughter and I descended and reached an area with a small tide pool. Looking up, I saw this incredible view of town looking back through Little Harbor at some colorful houses and Abbot Hall in the distance. As it was low tide, the path to Gerry Island had appeared and, if you look closely, you'll see two people walking along. They add a nice sense of perspective to the scene.

The Tree and the Rock on Brown’s Island

I picked up my daughter from camp in late August and, as it was low tide, decided to take her to Crowninshield island. We found ourselves walking across the flats that appeared as the water receded and then made our way past the dune grass up a small hill. Marblehead or the Real World

I've driven by this spot on Beacon Street numerous times and admired the beautiful house on the bend with impeccable landscaping. I never did read the sign placed on the fence that reads 'Marblehead' with an arrow toward Crowninshield's or Brown's Island and old town and another pointing back toward West Shore Drive labeled as the 'Real World'. The sign produced an instant grin on my face and a desire to photograph it. The hard part was how to bring out the sign in the photo and depict what it was trying to say. Sunset over Gerry Island

I had the opportunity to shoot Gerry Island a few weeks ago and managed to choose a night when the sun set near low tide. I watched as the path emerged from the water and formed a gentle S curve to guide the eye to the small island. Watch for a panorama view of this scene on Wednesday showing Little Harbor, Brown's Island and the homes along Front Street.

Island in the Fog – The Reshoot

Thank you everyone for your comments on yesterday's post both here and on Facebook. While this began as a personal project to 'shoot the town', I am thrilled that these images have made an impression on you. The vote tally clearly favored the 'no boat' crowd and, as luck would have it, we still had plenty of fog to work with. I shot the above while waiting for the tall ship Lynx (that photo next week). Island in the Fog

With Gerry Island in the news recently [Reporter Patch], it seemed an appropriate time to post this shot taken a few weeks ago. I had wanted to return to Fort Sewall and shoot this image of Gerry Island for a while but was struggling with getting the mood just right.
