October Sky over the Causeway

Yesterday began with fog then rain and stayed grey for much of the day.  As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, the clouds broke up and I thought there might be a chance for a decent sunset.  I had missed a few good ones lately so I made up my mind to head out. I stopped at a number of locations including Rocket Landing off Village Street, Parker Lane on the Neck and a few other old favorites before circling back and stopping at Devereux Beach.  I looked up as I got out of the car and [...]

Colorful Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

In June 2013, I had set a goal to photograph five of the Marblehead yacht clubs firing their sunset cannons.  One of the final images was of the cannon at the Dolphin Yacht Club and, on that night, I was fortunate to capture the cannon firing under a subtle rainbow in the evening sky. A few minutes after taking that image, I composed this one to include the kayaks in the dock adding color to the pink sunset over Marblehead Harbor. Here is the image of the sunset cannon firing at the Dolphin Yacht Club:

Rays of Light over Marblehead Harbor

Today's image was taken on Tuesday, August 18 from the pier at the Pleon Yacht Club.  I had set up early for sunset figuring the clouds in the sky might offer a decent show.  As it happened, the clouds served to create these beautiful rays of light while the sun was still fairly high above the horizon. The clouds then thickened as the sun descended and caused the sunset to fizzle out.  I saw the lackluster show developing and so I packed up my camera and tripod and headed to the car.  It was then that I noticed the Eastern [...]

Picture Perfect Sunset from Crocker Park

I found myself at Crocker Park for sunset on both July 1st and 2nd with camera in hand in large part to capture the Marblehead Festival of Arts activities.  As luck would have it, both nights featured incredible sunsets - the first with a dramatic purple sky and this one with a picture perfect sunset. I hadn't intended on shooting the sunset on this night and hadn't brought my tripod.  Instead I was planning on shooting the kids enjoying the show being put on as part of the 50th Festival of Arts.  That plan went out the window when I [...]

Purple Light and the Coming Storm

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out at dawn to capture images of Doliber Cove specifically because a storm was forecast for later that day.  A coming storm usually signals good light at dawn as in the old adage 'red sky in morning, sailor take warning'.  As it turns out, the coming storm would bring some incredible purple light with it later that evening... I had gone out again on the night of July 1 to participate in the Marblehead Festival of Arts Awards Night ceremony at Abbot Hall.  Since the full moon was due to rise [...]

Abbot Hall lit by the Pink Glow of Sunset

After capturing the streaks of clouds over Marblehead Neck, I continued walking along the causeway and captured photos as the sun dipped lower in the sky.  The clouds now formed a more intricate pattern over the 'mainland' and the harbor seemed to be partitioned to reflect those colors in large pools. I composed this image to include the recognizable tower of Abbot Hall while also focusing on the sailboats and their masts reflecting in these pools that shone pink from the setting sun.  Having Abbot Hall lit by the pink glow of sunset was a nice bonus as it allowed [...]

Golden Sunset on Marblehead Harbor

This image was taken just six minutes after yesterday's post.  The sun began to dip below the clouds and into the fog which served to diffuse the light and set off a golden sunset on Marblehead Harbor. I don't believe I have ever shot just this section of Marblehead as I tend to try to include Abbot Hall whenever I shoot towards this side of town.  This time, I wanted the sun to take center stage as it peeked behind the clouds.  I included just enough of the town to make the location recognizable.

Sunstar and Purple Clouds

Ten minutes - that's how much time elapsed from yesterday's image of a golden sun and this one of purple clouds.  I had been jumping in and out of my tree cover until the rain finally stopped and the sun began to sink below the horizon.  As it did so, the sky turned from a golden glow to deeper blue with beautiful purple light reflecting off the clouds. Knowing that I had a small window of opportunity for capturing a sunstar, I adjusted the composition and closed the lens aperture to its smallest.  As the sun began to disappear behind houses [...]

Golden Light and Breaking Clouds

Shortly after capturing yesterday's image of Marblehead Light, the storm clouds arrived and rain started to pour down on Chandler Hovey Park.  The radar was a bit scary with those areas of red making a beeline for Marblehead and I quickly got in the car and started driving home.  As I crossed the causeway, I noted the sun dropping below the heavy clouds and forming a giant ball with golden light exploding around it.  The rain had slowed and I quickly decided to turn around at Devereux Beach and head back to the Neck. I pulled over at Parker Lane [...]

Golden Reflections

Back once more to the evening of May 12 and the clouds over the Atlantic Ocean as seen from Devereux Beach.  The impressive cloud formation that I shared earlier in the week gradually coalesced and became more compacted near the horizon.  As the sun set, it threw its light towards the clouds which served to project golden reflections that easily shone on the still ocean water.
