Lone Boat and Abbot Hall

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had been going out more at sunset with the gradual shift in light.  This image comes from Saturday night and a trip to Parker Lane. I've photographed from this Public Way countless times and am constantly surprised by just how different the scene can appear depending on light, tide and choice of composition.  This image was taken at the peak of light which you can see reflecting nicely in the water of Marblehead Harbor.  I wanted to focus on the lone boat and Abbot Hall but included the steeples of St. Michaels Church [...]

Warm Nights and Purple Sunsets

Today's image comes from August 1, 2011 and was taken at 8:11pm as the sun set over another warm Summer day in Marblehead.  There's something about those warm nights that seem to lend themselves to these purple sunsets.  I don't recall seeing them nearly as often during the rest of the year. Won't be much longer before boats begin to fill Marblehead Harbor.

Purple Sky and Smooth Sand at Devereux Beach

On September 9, 2014, I witnessed one of the most incredible sunsets of my life.  The view was made even more amazing by my choice of Devereux Beach to serve as backdrop.  Some combination of storm and incredibly low tides had transformed what is normally a fairly rocky beach into this beautiful smooth sand version. I'll bet many longtime 'Headers would have been hard pressed to name this as Devereux Beach based on the conditions. More images of Marblehead without snow coming throughout the week.  Stay tuned...

Trodding Toward the Sunset at Crocker Park

After an impossible amount of snow fall, it seemed that the sky would never clear from its dreary grey.  But, as I finished shoveling our driveway, I noted a bit of sky poking out near the horizon.  I quickly walked into the house and up the stairs for a better view and, sure enough, blue sky could be seen in all directions under the clouds.  I figured there was a chance that the clearing would hold and the sunset would reflect off the clouds above and the freshly fallen snow that has piled up throughout the town - and so [...]

A Picture Perfect Sunset

On Saturday evening, I picked up me son from a playdate and noted the cloud cover as we drove home.  The day had brought with it a break from the dull gray skies that had covered Marblehead for what seemed like weeks and the clouds now seemed to be breaking up in time for sunset.  As we approached the house, I told him we were going to take a quick detour to Devereux Beach to see if I was right about the coming sunset.  I grabbed the camera bag and tripod, he grabbed a toy assault rifle and we were [...]

Explosion of Color in Marblehead Harbor

Summer sunsets have to be one of my favorite subjects to photograph.  Heading out on a warm evening chasing after whisps of clouds and waiting for each evening's show brings a sense of anticipation that is usually well rewarded. On this evening in June, there was an explosion of color in Marblehead Harbor with the sky above moving through shades of pinks and purples that lasted for what felt like an eternity.  Seemed like a nice image to turn to on this December day. Striking Sunset from Bass Rock Lane

This image from the rocks at the end of Bass Rock Lane was captured in mid-October.  I had gone out with some ideas in mind for this shoot and had also brought along my new iPhone 6 to try out its time-lapse mode.  I set up the phone and proceeded to scamper around the rocks looking for strong compositions including this one with the setting sun and houses along the Atlantic Ocean. I shared the time-lapse that evening but hadn't had a chance to share this image until today.

Thankful to Live in such a Beautiful Town

With Thanksgiving upon us, it is time to give thanks.  Wednesdays in Marblehead began in August 2010 as a personal project through which I hoped to learn more about this town that we had recently moved to.  From the start and to this day, I have taken images for myself.  Every single photo captures a moment in which I went out in search of something new to explore in this relatively small town.  I am so thankful that we moved here in 2008 and that this project has been so welcomed by Marbleheaders new and old. A quick check on Google [...]

Last Night from Atop the Causeway

As the clouds built on Sunday, I started to wonder if we might be in store for another nice sunset.  With that in mind, I headed out of the house a little after 3 looking for a good vantage point.  I stopped at a few spots that didn't quite pan out before heading to Devereux Beach and atop the causeway. From this position, I was able to shoot across the causeway looking out at Marblehead Harbor and quickly swing around to capture the sunset over Devereux Beach.  As it happened, the harbor side never did pick up the evening's colors [...]
