Sunset over the Gap

Continuing in the series of images captured on Sunday, November 6th while out to shoot the moonrise, here is a wider shot than yesterday's. The clouds had shifted and darkened So I moved closer to Grace Oliver Beach from my earlier spot up Crowninshield Road and zoomed out for this wider view that encompassed the beach, Peach's Point and Brown's Island. That sunset over the gap of water was the clincher though...

Storm Break

Overnight, a strong storm swept through Marblehead bringing rain and very high winds. The rain passed just as a high tide approached at 11am which, combined with the full moon, made for some potential flooding around town. It was actually the Code Red call warning the causeway would be closing that prompted me to get out the door and explore town. I started off at the State Street Landing and watched as waves crested over the concrete barrier along Tuckers Wharf. From there, I moved on to Doaks Lane and the stairs overlooking Little Harbor from where I was able [...]

Unexpected Sunset

“The best things in life are unexpected because there were no expectations.” ? Eli Khamarov I wrote entirely too much about may crazy running around last Wednesday but this was easily the best part of the day. I had woken up in the pre-dawn hours and managed to capture a sliver of the Hunter's moon setting over Abbot Hall and the harbor and then drove all around town trying to figure out where to shoot the moonrise. On a whim, I headed to Harding Lane and then crossed to Brown's Island since it was low tide. As I crossed, I [...]

Hunting the Moon at Brown’s Island

I mentioned in last night's very long text that I had started off shooting the full moon rising over Brown's Island. if you didn't quite make it through the whole thing, here is the section related to these two shots: I headed back across the mud (shoes tied this time) and found that Harding Lane wasn't quite right for the moonrise so I walked back to Beacon Street and then onto that outflow thing where I started to shoot the moon rising against the canopy of Brown's Island. Ran back to the car to switch lenses and back thinking one [...]

Whaler Moon

I missed this month's full moon but realized I had this image from last month that I had yet to share. I had captured the full moon rising over Gerry Island but then drove home along Beacon Street and pulled over when I spotted this scene. I wasn't along shooting the moonrise over Brown's and liked this composition with the whaler appearing in the wake of the light of the moon. The final image justified the multiple mosquito bites I got in the 10 minutes it took to capture this shot.

Brown’s Island Foliage

By the time I finally got this shot on Saturday, October 17th, I had driving along Beacon Street on three other occasions to scout out the current state of foliage on Brown's Island. Each time, the color showed hints of progression but it wasn't until after the rain storm passed that I finally got the peak foliage color I was looking for. As luck would have it, the departing storm had broken up leaving a scattering of clouds in the blue sky overhead. The use of a polarizing filter helped accentuate the clouds as well as the color of the [...]

Flying over Gracies

How about an aerial image to close out the week? This shot was captured with my Phantom 4 Pro on August 6, 2017 as I was flying over Gracies and rose up 400 feet to take in the full view of Little Harbor, Brown's Island, Gerry Island, Fort Sewall and the edge of Chandler Hovey Park on the Neck. With full foliage and boats dotting the waters, this seemed like a nice view to finish out the week and get us through the projected freezing cold (and snow?!?!?) that is due to fall tomorrow...

Gracey Sunrise

On Wednesday April 1st, I woke early to capture the first light of the new month hoping this one would not last as long as March had. I started off at the Landing and then continued down Fort Street with a quick stop at the Barnacle and then in front of Fort Beach before turning onto Fort Beach Lane and then continuing onto Orne Street. I pulled up in front of the Little Harbor Lobster Company but found the angle of the sun too far to the left and then continued on Beacon Street as it curved past Grace Oliver [...]

Fall Color on Brown’s Island

After capturing yesterday's image of the last regatta of the year at Redd's Pond, I drove down Norman Street. I had spotted some nice fall color on Brown's island a few days prior and, with the recent storm, wondered if any foliage remained. Sure enough, some bright orange leaves could be seen adding a touch of color to the large island in Little Harbor. This is likely my last chance to shoot any foliage in town as the trees have not fared well this year with the severe fall storms.
