Smoke on the Water – Fire in the Sky

This morning, air temperatures of 2F and water temperatures of 50F held the promise of sea smoke to make up for the otherwise miserable cold.  Any chance to see, let alone photograph, smoke on the water will get me out of the house and so, bundled in layers, I headed out.  I drove around trying to find the perfect spot and made my way just before dawn to Fort Sewall.  I was perched there braced against the wind gusts hoping for good light when I started to see breaks forming in the clouds. Sure enough, as the sun rose behind [...]

Fast Company and Bright Stars

On the morning of November 14, I had gone out before dawn to capture the third and final image of the supermoon setting behind Abbot Hall.  After it had set, I swapped lenses and waited for the break of dawn which brought with it a clear but beautiful pink-orange sky over Abbot Hall. Two boats were clearly visible in mid-harbor: Fast Company III and Bright Stars so, without much else in mind for a title of today's image, I decided to borrow the boat names.

Abbot and the Rooftops at Dawn

Today's image of Abbot and the rooftops was taken exactly one minute before yesterday's view of Grace Community Church.  I had been shooting from the back side of St. Michael's Steeple and kept alternating between wide and tighter views of Abbot Hall. As the sky reached its peak of pink color, I couldn't help but zoom out to capture the full extent of color in the morning sky as well as the rooftops interspersed with trees in this part of downtown Marblehead.

Morning Grace in Marblehead

Today and tomorrow's images come from my trip to the top of St. Michael's steeple and the beautiful dawn and sunrise which greeted us.  Given the tight space, there end up being only a limited number of compositions available but the differing light of dawn and sunrise more than makes up for the loss in variety. I discovered this composition of Grace Community Church juxtaposed with Old North Church on a previous trip to this spot and couldn't help but shoot it again this morning.  The soft pastel light of morning helped bring the entire scene together from the foreground [...]

Marblehead Rock under an Orange Sky

As dawn broke on October 16, I was surprised to find a brilliant display of color looking East as the weather forecast had called for clear skies.  I was counting on a clear sky for the moonset I shot a few minutes later but was thankful for this display as I waited for the moon to descend. I've shot Marblehead Rock at dawn and sunrise before but found the striations of color behind it mesmerizing and couldn't help one more view.  I decided to shoot this as a panorama of vertical images which, when combined, created an 88 megapixel final [...]

Muffin Shop at Dawn

Back to the top of St. Michael's steeple for today's image of the Muffin Shop at dawn.  I was moving around and around the top of the steeple on this October morning hunting for new compositions when I spotted this one of the Muffin Shop surrounded by a canopy of trees and backed by Marblehead Harbor and our lighthouse.  I'm sure the employees were hard at work producing muffins for their early morning customers.  I wish it was cold enough to catch a few wisps of smoke coming up from their kitchen...

Dawn on Little Harbor

This past weekend, I had an Allergy conference to attend in Boston.  That meant early morning wake ups and, on Saturday, I noted an incredible dawn from our house and quickly scanned the webcams in marblehead to find that the water had turned to a brilliant red display in one of the more impressive views of dawn on Little Harbor I had seen.  Unfortunately, all of this played out on my computer screen.  As Sunday's conference schedule was due to start a bit later, I decided to leave the house for Little Harbor and hoped for a nice repeat dawn [...]

Hooper at Dawn

On an early October morning, I met up with my friend Steve Clay at St. Michael's Church and the two of us successfully ascended to the top of the building's new steeple.  This was my third trip up to this spot overlooking historic downtown Marblehead and I was treated to great colors and a prefect sunrise.  I shared the sunrise view shortly after taking it but haven't had a chance to show any other images yet. During my very first ascent to this spot (on the scaffolding erected at the time), I found this composition of Hooper Street and its [...]

A New Dawn for a New Year

Today is Rosh Hashanah in the Jewish calendar and so I searched my archives for an image taken at dawn only to find that I hadn't taken one in quite some time.  This shot was captured in September 2013 and, while I've been out at sunrise on a number of occasions this year, I haven't had the opportunity to shoot at dawn yet this Summer or Fall.  I am hoping to correct the lack of dawn and sunrise images of our harbor in the days and weeks to come.  In the meantime, I wish you a Shana Tova (Happy New [...]

Summer Dawn at Redd’s Pond

Today's image was taken at dawn on July 1st, 2015.  I had woken up early in order to shoot the dawn breaking over Doliber Cove and then quickly drove over to Redd's Pond when I noticed the clouds reflecting that morning light. I shared another image from this morning shortly after taking it but had created this panorama version as well.  Though the pink light of dawn was more vibrant in the single frame, there was something about capturing the full length of this pond that appealed to me.
