Road to Nowhere – Gerry Island in the Fog

May is usually synonymous with foggy days as warm weather slowly advances into Marblehead.  This year was an exceptions with days and weeks of rain during what would be the 'foggy season'.  As I looked for an image to share today, I found this unique view of Gerry Island in the fog. I had gone out on this early May day in 2012 chasing the fog at sunset and hoping the two atmospheric phenomenon would combine to form a stunning sunset.  I explored Fort Sewall as the sun set (sadly, the fog became too thick to allow sunset's light through) [...]

Foggy Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

Continuing this week's exploration of the archives brings us this image from late June 2013.  I had gone out to the Dolphin Yacht Club this evening to capture the sunset cannon being fired and ended up being witness to a beautiful pink foggy sunset. The light was incredible and the water content of the fog served to help diffuse and reflect the sunset colors.  If you look carefully, you can spot a faint rainbow that appeared overhead for a few minutes shortly after the cannon was fired.

Remembering a Full Harbor and Foggy Summer Days

As the days get shorter, the weather cooler and Marblehead harbor begins to empty, I can't help but bring out a photo from a foggy Summer day in 2012.  I had gone out on this fog filled day hoping to capture images of boats in Marblehead harbor surrounded by the atmospheric fog.  I had envisioned shots of boats with the thick fog serving to hide any signs of houses across the shore. What I found when I arrived on Marblehead Neck was a more perfect scene than I imagined.  The houses across the shore had indeed disappeared in the fog but Abbot [...]

Light Up the Trees

So as luck would have it, this image was waiting in line next to yesterday's image of the lifeguard chair on an empty beach.  I went back to view all images taken on this day and remembered there was a "smoky sou'wester" that explained this phenomenon.  I had never heard the term until a gentleman floating in the waters of Doliber Cove shared it with me. Anyway, this image of a flag planted near a small grave marker at Old Burial Hill came from a walk around Marblehead exploring the foggy conditions.  The angle of the sun and fog served [...]

Lifeguard Chair on an Empty Beach

I was searching in the archives for an image to share and found this one of a lifeguard chair on an empty Devereux beach that I thought fit with the current heatwave making it finally feel like Summer.  Then I looked at the date this photo was taken - July 21, 2014 (exactly one year ago) - and that clinched it. I don't remember the fog that descended on Marblehead last Summer but the view of a lone lifeguard chair and a beach seeming to go on forever into the foggy mist was one that I thought others might enjoy.

Windows to the Harbor

Sunday, June 21st was Fathers Day and, after spending the day with my wife and two kids, I decided to treat myself to a photo shoot.  I had a particular spot in mind for that day - though you'll have to wait until Wednesday to see it. As I explored this part of Marblehead Neck, I wandered down to the edge of Nahant Street.  I've photographed this area on a few occasions previously but on this day, the tide was perfect for using the rocky outcropping as a frame.  I composed the image to also include the Corinthian Yacht Club [...]

Lost in the Fog at Parker Lane

I don't believe I have shared a black and white image in a while so I thought this shot would be a good one to end the week.  Parker Lane is one of my favorite public ways in town and I have recently shared a number of images captured from this location.  I've always walked right under this tree and on to the steps leading to the beach below but, on this day, I stopped and took in the canopy of leaves overhead. As luck would have it, a dense fog had rolled in and I decided to take advantage [...]

The Old Oil House

Continuing the journey into the archives, this image comes from May 2011 and a foggy morning on Chandler Hovey Park.  By this time, I had photographed Marblehead Light on many occasions and this old oil house at least once before in the snow.  The added element of fog helped push Marblehead Light into the distant background and added a sense of mystery to this small brick building situated on the edge of Marblehead Neck.
