The Fishing Spot

On Friday, May 29, a dense fog descended on Marblehead and I decided on an impromptu photoshoot as soon as I got home.  I started on the Neck shooting boats in the mist (I'll share that image tomorrow) before deciding to check the conditions at Redd's Pond.  I started by shooting some favorite compositions but then walked towards the street for a wider view.  As I did, I spotted this young boy walking along the path with fishing rod in hand searching for a favorite fishing spot.  I took a few quick shots as he walked in front of me [...]

Pier to Nowhere

Has it really been three years since the new Stramski pier was built and, yet, it remains unused? I captured the newly built pier in May 2012 but a number of issues have delayed its opening to date.  I'm hoping the pier can finally open to the public this season...

Gerry Island in the Fog

Continuing this week's black and white theme comes this image from May 5, 2012.  We had fog again to coincide with the carnival being in town and I had been shooting at Fort Sewall when I looked out and noted it was high tide.  I quickly made my way down Fort Beach Lane and to this location where I could shoot Gerry Island in the fog. I decided to take advantage of the thick fog and leave a lot of negative space above the island to add to the mood of isolation.  You can just make out a reflection of [...]

Bleachers in the Fog at Seaside Park

In early December of 2011, a thick fog descended on Marblehead.  I had an image in mind at Seaside park that would work best with fog and headed down there to see if the conditions were right. As it turned out, the fog was even thicker that I had hoped for and set up the scene perfectly.  I used the metal bleachers as a leading line toward the wooden covered ones just beyond. I decided to make this a 'black and white week' so you can look forward to more images of Marblehead in black and white in the days [...]

Fried Dough at the Carnival

How about a break from the snow and cold for a look ahead at one of my favorite events during Spring in Marblehead - the Annual Devereux Beach Carnival! Last year offered incredible conditions for shooting the carnival with dense fog and rain leaving puddles throughout the grounds.  The carnival was nearly empty on this night and I went about capturing some of my favorite images of the carnival in the fog at night. I haven't shared this one yet but it was one of my favorites from the night.  The neon glow of the Fried Dough sign shining brightly [...]

Fog Rolls into Little Harbor

This image comes from an outing in mid-July and is the eighth shot I've now shared from this series.  As you can see, the fog rolled into Little Harbor so that only the nearby trees could be seen with the subtle shape of a boat moored in the harbor just visible.  Brown's Island is barely seen despite its close proximity.

A Magical Night on State Street

Lately I've been sharing a lot more images of the sea and, with that in mind, decided to look through the 'to be posted' file in search of an image that broke the recent trend. This image was captured on a particularly magical night on State Street on December 5th, 2013.  This is one of many black and white images of fog that came out of the evening's shoot throughout town.  I had a tough time deciding between color and black and white for this particular image as there is a decorated tree at the bottom right that seems to disappear [...]

Fog on the Causeway

Since discovering the beauty of these lamp posts on the causeway during a foggy night in November 2011, I have returned on a few occasions looking for new compositions to showcase the balance of light and shadows on this link between Marblehead Neck and the mainland. This is one of three compositions captured in early December 2013 on a foggy evening.  The fog on the causeway helped illuminate the full arc of light given off by each lamp post.  Below is a gallery of other images in the series: Would you like to order a print of this image? Thankful to Live in such a Beautiful Town

With Thanksgiving upon us, it is time to give thanks.  Wednesdays in Marblehead began in August 2010 as a personal project through which I hoped to learn more about this town that we had recently moved to.  From the start and to this day, I have taken images for myself.  Every single photo captures a moment in which I went out in search of something new to explore in this relatively small town.  I am so thankful that we moved here in 2008 and that this project has been so welcomed by Marbleheaders new and old. A quick check on Google [...]
