Seal Beach, Marblehead

This President's Day weekend, a lone seal pup was spotted basking in the sun on the rocks at Fort Beach.  He became a regular visitor to this spot and so, on the Saturday before record cold temperatures were due to arrive, my family and I headed over to see if we could spot the newest resident of Marblehead. Sure enough, the seal could be seen along the nearest rocks to the roadway.  He (or she) would perk up its head when cars passed but otherwise seemed quite content to lie there on this relatively warm perch.  I started off shooting [...]

Lighting up the Sea Smoke

This morning I was fortunate to witness and capture the most incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor.  I started shooting at 6:30am and clicked the shutter for the last time at 8:00am.  During that time, I took more than 100 images and, only after coffee and a hot shower, did I finally go through them to find and process my favorites.  I shared one image already but found that I had 13 favorite images of sea smoke from this morning and really wanted to show one wide view as well. The relatively warm ocean was producing copious amounts [...]

Pillars of Sea Smoke in Marblehead Harbor

This morning's record low temperatures (the coldest Marblehead has been in over a decade) meant that sea smoke was likely to occur.  Since moving to Marblehead in 2008, sea smoke has become one of my favorite subjects to photograph.  While I've taken photos of this incredible phenomenon of steam coming off the relatively hot ocean (with air temperatures of -10F above it), I've never seen a display of sea smoke as occurred this morning. After dressing appropriately for the arctic temperatures (it must have been -20 something with the wind chill), I left the house and made my first stop [...]

Sunset After the Storm at Crocker Park

Once in a while, a snow storm departs just as the sun begins to set leading to perfect conditions and incredible light.  Such was the case on this day one year ago - February 10, 2015 - when one of the countless storms departed as the sun began to set. I was at Crocker Park shooting a favorite composition of Abbot Hall when I turned and saw the golden light spread over Marblehead Neck.  I quickly changed position and composed this image including the barren branches of a tree to help frame the final scene. I haven't had a chance [...]

Christmas in Marblehead – Last Light on Marblehead Light

When I go out to shoot the town of Marblehead, it is not uncommon for me to find at least five different compositions in good light and then have to select one to share and place others in the archive.  On this day, I had set up at the pier of the Pleon Yacht Club which offered me a number of photographic possibilities.  This week, I wanted to share five different images captured from 3:45pm to 4:05pm on Christmas in Marblehead. As the light began to fade, I moved to the right edge of the pier and composed this image [...]

Marblehead Neck under the Pink Glow of Sunset

In mid-December, I headed out before sunset to shoot from the causeway.  It was yet another warm evening in a Winter that had been seeing above normal temperatures.  I started to shoot as the sun set and the sky lit up in this pastel pink color. My favorite image included this view of Marblehead Neck with working boats along the shore and scattered clouds breaking up the beautiful sky.

Two Lights on Christmas Day

Back to Christmas day and that tree in a dinghy...  I've shared two images of the rare Christmas full moon silhouetting this boat and its perfectly placed and lit Christmas tree.  However, while I waited for the moon to rise on Christmas day, I couldn't help but wander around the wet rocks looking for other compositions. As it happened, the lights on Marblehead Light came on at sunset as did its green beacon and I found this one spot which allowed me to line up the two lights on Christmas day.  Thanks to First Harbor Company for the picture perfect [...]

Sea Smoke on Marblehead Neck

Here is another image from my dawn outing to capture sea smoke in Marblehead harbor.  I shared a close up view of the lighthouse surrounded by the incredible image of sea smoke rising from the water last week.  As the sun rose (and my time ran short - I had to be at work by 7:30am), I made my way towards the car with regular looks across the water. At 7:23am when this image was taken, the sun had finally risen in the morning sky to illuminate the clouds over Marblehead Neck.  I quickly composed this shot to include the [...]

Sea Smoke – Arctic Morning in Marblehead

The sea smoke was an incredible sight to behold on this arctic morning in Marblehead - going out in 7F (without the windshield) definitely paid off.  When I first saw the projected temperatures of single digits for this morning, my first thought was that I would finally have a chance to replicate and improve upon my favorite image of sea smoke from 2012.  That was the first year I had witnessed this phenomenon of arctic air over a relatively warm ocean creating billowing smoke on the water.  With that vision in mind, I bundled up and headed to Fort Sewall [...]

A Shining Star on New Years Day – First Sunrise of 2016

A photographer friend of mine recently commented that New Years doesn't begin at midnight for us...it starts with the first sunrise.  And so, while most were just waking up to the new year, I headed out in the predawn hours for St. Michael's church and a trip to the top of the steeple.  I had made some plans a few days earlier to meet Steve Clay and Ed Nilsson at the church and capture this first sunrise of 2016 from this unique vantage point. As a quick aside, I had welcomed 2012 with a sunrise shoot atop Old North Church and [...]
