A Shining Star on New Years Day – First Sunrise of 2016

A photographer friend of mine recently commented that New Years doesn't begin at midnight for us...it starts with the first sunrise.  And so, while most were just waking up to the new year, I headed out in the predawn hours for St. Michael's church and a trip to the top of the steeple.  I had made some plans a few days earlier to meet Steve Clay and Ed Nilsson at the church and capture this first sunrise of 2016 from this unique vantage point. As a quick aside, I had welcomed 2012 with a sunrise shoot atop Old North Church and [...]

Moonrise over the Causeway

The full moon is upon us again with the Beaver moon set to rise tonight around sunset.  This image comes from October and features the Hunter's moonrise over the causeway.  I had shared another image of this moonrise previously focusing on the causeway leading towards the large full moon.  After taking that image, I headed back towards the parking lot at Devereux Beach and captured this version with the causeway's concrete wall now serving as the leading line and allowing me to featured more of the Fall foliage on Marblehead Neck. Conditions are looking good for watching the full moonrise [...]

The Rain Cloud over Marblehead Neck

I've shared a few different images on this rain cloud that entered the skies over Marblehead on July 24, 2015.  It really was a sight to see and, when the sun set and added a golden glow to the structure, I couldn't help but capture it from every possible angle. This view offers a glimpse of the rain cloud hovering over Marblehead Neck and given a sense of scale to the cloud.

Light up the Lighthouse

Today's images come from Christmas Eve 2011.  I had gone out that evening (if you can consider 4:00pm evening that is) in order to shoot Marblehead Light lit up for the holidays.  I had captured a few images of the lights dangling from atop the lighthouse the previous year but had a few more images in mind.  Little did I know that this would be the best presentation of lights I would see (they seem to have dimmed significantly in each of the past few years). What's interesting is that I captured one image at the peak of sunset and, [...]

October Sky over the Causeway

Yesterday began with fog then rain and stayed grey for much of the day.  As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, the clouds broke up and I thought there might be a chance for a decent sunset.  I had missed a few good ones lately so I made up my mind to head out. I stopped at a number of locations including Rocket Landing off Village Street, Parker Lane on the Neck and a few other old favorites before circling back and stopping at Devereux Beach.  I looked up as I got out of the car and [...]

Open Seating for Watching the Ocean

In August 2012, I was able to realize the goal of shooting the Lipton Tea House on Marblehead Neck.  Once finished with that incredible structure, I was invited by the owner to photograph other locations on the beautifully manicured grounds abutting the Atlantic Ocean. I found this Adirondack chairs perfectly positioned for watching the ocean and went about figuring out possible compositions.  As you can see by the strong shadows, the sun was nearly overhead at this point which made for less than ideal conditions.  I hope the final image conveys both the luxury of being able to sit in [...]

Coming Home to Marblehead

In mid-July of 2013, a friend took me out on his boat a few hours before sunset for a cruise around Marblehead.  We had perfect conditions and light which resulted in some of my favorite images of Marblehead from the water. At one point, we had gone out to Children's Island and, on our return, I spotted the Hannah Glover ferrying campers back home to Marblehead after a day spent on the island.  I captured this image with the Hannah Glover and Marblehead Light bookending Marblehead Neck under soft clouds and light. It's no wonder that Marblehead is home to [...]

Rocky Shore of Marblehead Neck

On Wednesday, July 22nd, I had left the house in the hope of a decent sunset and ended up on the beach off Corinthian Lane.  I had checked the tides before making my way and the mid-tide made this area of Marblehead Neck abutting the harbor a nice spot from which to explore multiple compositions. As I wandered down the shore, I noted a rock formation I hadn't previously explored.  As the sun set, I composed an image to focus on the rocky shore (made of granite?) and include the view of Marblehead harbor filled with boats and the familiar [...]

The Storm Cloud

On Friday, July 24th, my family and I were driving back into Marblehead from dinner in Beverly where we had barely escaped heavy rains.  As we drove down Lafayette Street, I spotted an enormous rainbow taking shape over Salem Harbor and received permission to pull over and capture it (I had luckily put the camera bag and tripod in the trunk just in case).  With sunset fast approaching and fearing little time to capture any other great clouds over Marblehead Harbor, I convinced my wife and kids to join me on a quick photo shoot. When I turned onto Front [...]

Full Moon and the Eastern’s Red Glow

As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I was set up to capture the full moon rising from Crocker Park when a red glow began to form on the Eastern Yacht Club and houses on Marblehead Neck.  This was the scene I stared at, dumbfounded, until I looked behind me and saw the purple light from a coming storm was the source of the mysterious red glow.
