Simpler Days

As we pass six months of social distancing and mask wearing, I found myself drawn to my admittedly few environmental portraits that had yet to be shared. This shot of Glover's Regiment crossing Marblehead harbor as a tribute to simpler days was an instant selection. The shot was captured on December 1, 2018 and features the whole of the Regiment well within our now 6 foot distance. End of the Rainbow

Back to that late June evening at Devereux Beach and the most vibrant rainbow I've ever seen in Marblehead. I shared a couple of wide shots of this rainbow but also captured some tighter compositions. I started off with only the rainbow, it's 'double' and the no wake sign in the frame but, when a family came into the frame with a water-skier, I knew I had to include them in this shot of the end of the rainbow.

Beach Day

It's going to be a scorcher today so I hope you made plans to either stay inside with the AC on or are headed to a local beach such as Preston. With 90+ degree temps in the forecast, it really does feel like a great beach day. This aerial image of Preston beach was captured on August 6, 2017. Ready to Sail – Marblehead Junior Race Week

With everything going on, I wasn't sure if the Marblehead Junior Race week would be taking place. I was glad to see that, with some changes (Optis and Lasers only), we will have a chance to watch young sailors race around the harbor. This image of a young sailor making her boat ready was captured on July 22, 2015. If you have a chance, head out to watch these races Monday through Wednesday of next week.

The Young Man and the Sea

While I waited for the moon to rise on July 4th, I decided to look out from the back side of Castle Rock towards Tinkers Island. From there I spotted a young man standing between waves coming ashore and fishing off the Neck. When the waves broke just right, they helped bring the man into contrast and I tried to time this shot to maximize the effect. With Tinkers blurred slightly by the wide open aperture and picking up the last light of sunset, the photo had the feeling of a painting as soon as I clicked the shutter button.

The Masked Fisherman

One more from Sunday's outing which started off at the State Street Landing where I spotted this young man fishing off the dock. Despite no one around, he had a mask around his face which was really nice to see. I got lucky with this frame to capture the line sailing over the Neck while a boat (yacht?) named Murphy's Law made its way out of the harbor.

The New Normal

This was the scene I alluded to in yesterday's post. When I arrived at Redd's on Sunday, I was pleased to see so many people taking the selfless precaution of wearing masks while enjoying a warm May day in Marblehead. I couldn't help but grab a few shots of what appears to be the New Normal in town and across much of the world as we await an increasingly likely chance for a vaccine in the fall/winter. *Note: the telephoto lens again compressed the image making it appear that people were far more crowded than they actually were.

Summer Nights in Marblehead

Sometimes as I go through my 'to be posted' archive, I come across an image and wonder why it didn't make the cut initially. In this case, I looked back and found that I had been playing with reflections of the lighthouse in a puddle of water from a recent rain and then later was treated to an even nicer sunset sky. Lost Carnival

The rain on Friday should have been my first clue but somehow the weekend came and went and it was only near the end of two picture perfect days that I remembered - this should have been the weekend of the carnival. I really love the carnival and have made it a point to shoot it each year. I remember being particularly excited for this year's event as I was told that Cushing Amusement had purchased a new taller ferris wheel that lit up and would have made a great centerpiece of any composition.
