Brilliant Sunset on an Empty Harbor

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had left the house on February 18th with the hopes of catching a solid sunset.  As you can see, this brilliant sunset far exceeded my expectations.  There's something different about the Winter sun and its accompanying sunsets that makes for these intense pinks when the clouds break just right. As luck would have it, I had positioned myself at Corinthian Lane and was able to capture this brilliant sunset reflecting on an empty Marblehead harbor with a private pier breaking up the foreground and Marblehead's skyline positioned in the lower third of the frame. [...]

The Pier at Parker Lane

So this image was taken 6 minutes before yesterday's of a harbor filled with boats.  As I mentioned yesterday, I had gone out to Parker Lane (one of the public ways) to shoot the Summer sunset and found some dramatic light before me. Prior to shooting the peak of sunset's color, I composed this image of a private pier under beautiful clouds.

Old Glory and the Corinthian

On the same night in which I captured an image of rocks along this section of Marblehead Neck abutting the harbor, I found a number of other interesting compositions.  This one was taken just a few minutes earlier when I made my way past a private pier and noticed Old Glory flying high overhead.  As I looked around for a composition, I found this spot where the Corinthian Yacht Club can be seen through the pylons of the pier and its flag can just be made out juxtaposed with Old Glory. The flying flag and warm light convey the heat [...]

The Pier at the Eastern Yacht Club

I left Parker Lane shortly after Wednesday's image was taken and drove down to Foster Street.  The light was starting to fade but the lights at the Eastern Yacht Club's pier were on and I couldn't resist this view taking in the full length of the beautiful pier lit by lamps and bathed in the last hints of purple glow from the sunset. The Eastern Yacht Club really does have one of the most impressive piers in Marblehead.

Pier to Nowhere

Has it really been three years since the new Stramski pier was built and, yet, it remains unused? I captured the newly built pier in May 2012 but a number of issues have delayed its opening to date.  I'm hoping the pier can finally open to the public this season...

Sea Smoke in the Harbor – Corinthian and Marblehead Light

Back to the incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor that took place on January 8, 2015.  This image was captured on my first round at Foster Street (I would come back after capturing the sun rise at Castle Rock before racing to work).  I had just photographed the sea smoke in the harbor with a purple sky over Abbot Hall and turned to find the sea smoke was even thicker looking out toward the Corinthian Yacht Club with Marblehead Light towering behind it. The wind was moving the sea smoke off the water and it took a few [...]

Between the Docks on Marblehead Neck

On Tuesday, October 14, I had made the decision to head out for a sunset shoot and chose Marblehead Neck as my destination.  It had been a while since I had explored one of the public ways on the Neck in particular and so I drove down to Harvard Street and then down to the water's edge.  I ducked under the closes dock and set myself up between the docks on Marblehead Neck as the sun began its slow descent. With Marblehead harbor still relatively full of boats, I composed this image to include both docks and Abbot Hall seen [...]

Sun Star After the Storm

We have had some incredible light this past week and, as luck would have it, my son is at sleep-away camp so I have more time to go out and capture the amazing sunsets that have taken shape over Marblehead Harbor. Monday saw the first confirmed tornado touch down in Essex county (Revere) along with a steady stream of thunderstorms.  Thankfully, most missed Marblehead to the North but the clouds that accompanied the activity suggested yet another epic sunset. I headed out to Marblehead Neck and, with clouds exploding all around me, decided to stop along Foster Street for the [...]

The Cranes at Sunset overlooking Marblehead Harbor

You know you are dealing with an incredible sunset when a pair of cranes grab your attention and become the focal point of an image.  I had never imagined taking a picture of the two cranes that stand at the end of this pier off Foster Street but then I never saw light as incredible as on this Wednesday evening. With the low-lying fog bank on Marblehead Harbor and the explosion of colors overhead, I kept moving from one spot to the next trying to capture the incredible light before me.  As I moved to cross from one side to [...]
