Watching the Sunset at the OPCL

I headed out last night in hopes of a repeat of the previous night's spectacular sunset (which I wasn't able to photograph) and decided to try out two new spots from which I had yet to capture any images over these past six years. I started off at Wyman Cove and then headed off to Overlook Road.  I had planned to end up along the road at the water's edge of Waterside Cemetery but misjudged and ended up on Overlook Road.  There I found a beautiful pier belonging to the OPCL (Ocean Park Civic League) and asked some of the [...]

Marblehead Harbor and the Red Cloaked Tower

On Tuesday, a storm approached Marblehead to the south and I thought I would try to capture some dramatic clouds and light.  I drove across the causeway to Marblehead Neck and scouted a number of vantage points and captured a few images at each.  In the end, a walk to the end of Peabody Lane and the public right of way there led me to this spot where all the elements came into place under some very nice light.  All except one... Abbot Hall tower is currently cloaked in red with scaffolding along its full height as much-needed repairs are [...]

Waves Coming Ashore at Mooring Road

I developed a bit of an obsession with the pier at Mooring Road in 2011.  I had first discovered the pier in April 2011 and this image is one of the first I captured on that day.  I would return in the early Winter to explore the pier jutting out from the road in one of my favorite long exposure images later that year. As we approach three years since capturing this images of waves coming ashore as seen from the pier at Mooring Road, I thought it was a great opportunity to finally share the shot. Click below for all [...]

30 Minute Tie Up at Rockett Landing

Back to the archive for this image taken in April 2011.  At the time, we were renting an apartment off Village Street so this spot had become a favorite from which to shoot the sunset.  I could look out our window to check conditions and then make a mad dash down the hill to try to capture some of the beautiful sunsets that would take shape over the waters of Salem harbor from this spot at Rockett Landing. This particular image sat in the queue but never seemed to be good enough to warrant a share.  I spent about an [...]

Long Exposure – Corinthian Dock and the Mooring

On this Long Exposure Tuesday, I decided to share an image taken in early April 2012.  This was an exceptionally warm day (hard to believe with the weather we've had so far this month) and I ended up wandering up and down the harbor's edge hoping to shoot under and around the piers that line the water.  I ended up at the Corinthian near the end of my shoot and noted the way their dock lined up with Abbot Hall in the distance. As I got closer, I found this great old mooring somehow cemented in the rocks and decided [...]

The Long Night Moon Rises over the Pier on Mooring Road

The Long Night Moon rose on December 28th and I made a bee line for Mooring Road to try to capture it.  I had planned this out the day before and scouted out various locations from which the moon was expected to rise.  This was the only time of the year when the moon rise would put it in close proximity to one of my favorite piers in town and I decided to head to Mooring road.  The issues were that I was working that day and the moon was due to rise about 30 minutes after sunset.  I managed [...]

Long Exposure – Marblehead Harbor in Black and White

Much of my black and white long exposure work has been influenced by some incredibly talented photographers whom I have met through Google+.  Of them, Joel Tjintjelaar has been a particularly strong influence.  His work is simply incredible and I highly recommend a visit to his online gallery: http://www.bwvision.com/ This image was taken at dawn in mid-November shortly after capturing this view of Fort Sewall and the harbor [link].  I turned to face the causeway and captured this view of Marblehead harbor (now empty for the Winter) in a 15 second exposure.  I had initially processed it in color but the [...]

Under the Pier at the Eastern Yacht Club

It's Tuesday so back to Long Exposures from around town.  This one was taken in January 2012 as I explored the shores along the neck and scampered over rocks and under piers.  The structure above this one struck me and I decided to center it in the frame to emphasize the symmetry.  A long exposure helped calm the already fairly still waters below.  Hope you enjoy this one.

Sunset from the Village Street Pier

Wednesdays in Marblehead resumes after the brief hiatus to shoot foliage in Vermont (if you missed the iPhone sneak peak, click HERE for the final shot - it's the first on the page).  I have been meaning to post this image for a while now but other shots kept cutting ahead of it.  This was taken at the end of August and I still remember how warm and humid it was on this night and how many mosquitoes kept buzzing around me as I shot this. I had noted the colors developing as the sun set and decided to drive [...]

First Sunset in Marblehead

This will serve a bit as a 'where I started' post.  As many of you know, we moved to Marblehead in May 2008 so that I could start work as an Allergist at the Asthma and Allergy Affiliates in Salem and Danvers.  We had just gotten here from Washington, DC where I had been working and moved to a rental house off Village street.  My wife had found the house and I had only seen it once.  On this night, one of the very first spent here, I witnessed the first of many beautiful sunsets. As it began to take [...]
