Blue Sky and the Painted Sunrise

I've only shared one image from this sunrise that took place on June 30th but the sky went through so many shades of color that I was left with many more in my 'to be published' folder. This was one of the first shots I took from the float at the end of Commercial Street. I started to shoot as the first light of dawn created what looked like a painted sunrise that reflected perfectly in the still waters of Marblehead Harbor. I decided to compose the image to include a boat docked nearby and only later saw the name [...]

The Harbor at Noon

Wednesday began with thick fog over town and I wrote off the day as unlikely to offer many photo opportunities between the dreary weather and lack of foliage around town. As the day progressed, the sun burned through the fog and clouds began to appear in the western sky. I had a few errands to run so I threw the camera bag in the trunk and drove off to the Neck. I circled the Neck not finding the image I wanted at Chandler Hovey Park and made it back down to Harbor Avenue just off the causeway where I spotted [...]

Frozen Harbor at Sunset

The night before a blizzard quite literally exploded over Marblehead, I went out hoping to capture the sight of a nearly frozen harbor.  While Salem harbor had frozen over several days ago, Marblehead's own harbor seemed more stubborn in succumbing to the arctic blast. Earlier on this Wednesday, I had made it out to Riverhead Beach and flew my drone over the newly frozen parts of inner harbor and knew that at least part of our harbor had finally frozen. As sunset approached, I headed across the causeway trying to think of a new vantage point having shot from just [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #7 Perfect Morning at Redd’s Pond

When it came time to decide on my top 10 images of 2017, I found myself eyeing several recent images for inclusion and ended up with 4 of the top 10 having been taken in December.  I can't decide if that is due to some bias on my end to favor photos taken recently and thereby still holding strong memories of the shoot or a unique effect this year with some truly picture perfect conditions. For #7, I decided on this photos of a truly perfect morning at Redd's Pond.  I've captured Redd's partially frozen before but never with such [...]

Reflections in the Sand at Devereux Beach

On an early September evening in 2014, I headed out to Devereux Beach to chase after some cumulous clouds that had formed shortly before sunset.  I arrived to find low tide and wet sand creating the perfect environment for these clouds to form reflections in the sand. I shot this from low to the ground to try to maximize the foreground sand and reflections while keeping the bodies of both clouds visible above Flying Point and Marblehead Neck.

Reflections at Chandler Hovey Park

From the same night as yesterdays post (literally taken 34 seconds before), comes this image of Marblehead Light captured in a reflection from a recent storm.  As I mentioned yesterday, I chased clouds between storms out to Chandler Hovey Park and spent a few minutes shooting the lighthouse with boats coming into the harbor.  I then spotted a puddle created from the rain that had just ended and captured this shot of the lighthouse reflected in the mirror-like surface. As luck would have it, another person was photographing the sunset and their pose at the base of the lighthouse almost [...]

Rainy Days for the Marblehead Carnival

If you've been wondering what is responsible for the recent run of rainy days, look no further than Devereux Beach - the Marblehead Carnival is coming to town tomorrow, Thursday, May 4th!  It's become traditions that the annual Senior carnival brings with it inclement weather.  As a photographer, I've been delighted to visit the carnival on those rainy and foggy nights to capture images of the rides shining through the mist or reflecting in puddles. My full gallery of Marblehead Carnival images from the past eight years can be found below. Click the link for more:

Reflections on a Still Harbor

While aerial images can open up a world of possibilities in the hundreds of feet above Marblehead, I've really enjoyed using my new Phantom 4 Pro to capture images from just a few feet off the ground but in locations otherwise inaccessible to me before.  For today's image, I flew from Riverhead beach to these two moored lobster boats in the inner harbor and lucked out when the sun broke through the clouds behind me just as I got into position. I've always wanted to capture images of the working boats in our harbor in this way but previously was [...]

Summer Sunsets on the Harbor

Though it has been great to explore views over Marblehead with my new Phantom 4 Pro, I cannot wait for the mooring to fill with boats and capture warm Summer sunsets on the harbor.  This image was taken on a picture perfect evening in September but we are only five weeks away from seeing boats starting to fill Marblehead harbor for the season.
