Casting its Light – Marblehead Lighthouse

Not long after the supermoon rose on November 13th, it reached a height and brightness which offered little in the way of compositions.  Instead of chasing the moon, I focused instead on the intense golden glow reflecting in the still waters of Marblehead Harbor.  I repositioned as the moon rapidly ascended and reached this point at which the moon was casting its light directly over Marblehead Light.  Without the moon in the frame, the viewer is left with a surreal display of the lighthouse seeming to cast a golden light onto the waters below with the green beacon clearly visible [...]

Quiet Reflections at Redd’s Pond

In early August, I had gone out at mid-day to explore Marblehead under perfectly cloudy skies.  I stopped at Redd's Pond at what seemed like the perfect time as the light breeze abated and allowed the water to calm - reflecting the house across the water and trees surrounding it. I had to wait for the sun to poke out through the clouds to get the lighting I wanted and, during that time, spent a while in quiet reflections at Redd's Pond.  Not a bad spot for that...

Fire in the Sky

Tonight, I was fortunate to capture one of the most incredible displays of color and light as a fire in the sky marked one of the last sunsets of this Summer in Marblehead.  I had missed out on last night's sunset and was jealous of the shots populating my Facebook and Instagram feeds.  As sunset approached and the air picked up humidity, I decided to head out hoping for a decent showing. I drove across the causeway and stopped along Foster Street to assess the position of the sun in the sky.  From there, I headed over to Corinthian Lane and [...]

Summer Days at Redd’s Pond

Two weeks ago, I decided to take a hiatus from Wednesdays in Marblehead to allow me time to explore this town and bring back that sense of adventure and awe that used to come with each outing.  I had found that I was going to the same spots over and over and getting decent images but few that brought back that feeling of wonder and excitement.  For those two weeks, the camera remained tucked away (except for that incredible rainbow and lightning at sunset outing and a commissioned shoot of a house). Yesterday, as cumulous clouds finally crossed over Marblehead, [...]

Old Glory on Chandler Hovey Park

I shared an image yesterday of Marblehead Light reflecting in rainwater after a storm passed through Marblehead.  Having captured that image, I wandered around the puddle of water looking for other reflections when I spotted Old Glory at half mast and perfectly balanced with its reflection in the water. I again decided on a square crop to help the inherent symmetry of the image.  Thankfully, there was just enough wind to set the flag waving but not enough to disrupt the mirror like surface of the rainwater. I had never looked up the history of the term Old Glory before [...]

Light Between Storms

We had the first real Summer storms pass through Marblehead yesterday with near torrential rains at one point in the afternoon and a bit of thunder and lightning later in the evening.  As the first wave of storms passed, I headed out to Chandler Hovey Park hoping to catch a view of Marblehead Light between storms.  With the amount of rain that fell, I had a feeling that rainwater would have collected in a familiar spot along the path to the lighthouse. Sure enough, there was enough rainwater with which I could capture reflections of Marblehead Light and I explored [...]

Sunset Reflection at Rockett Landing

On June 2, 2014, I chased the evening colors out toward Rockett Landing before circling back towards Fort Sewall.  This familiar pier/float was the location for numerous sunrise and sunset shoots when we lived on Willow Road upon first moving to Marblehead in 2008.  The spot serves as a tie up for dinghies, a place to unload a boat and rinse it off or take a launch service out to moored boats in Salem harbor. On this night, I had the run of Rockett Landing and shot several compositions as the sun dipped below the horizon and illuminated the evening sky.  As I headed back [...]

Rain or Shine for the Marblehead Carnival

The Marblehead Carnival is in town!  For those who didn't notice the non-stop rain that always accompanies the Senior carnival or the signs posted around town, this will serve as your official notice to head to Devereux Beach for fried dough, old school rides and a fun four days. While the inclement weather has approached the feel of a running joke, the fog and rain have made for some great conditions to photograph the annual event.  Today's image comes from May 1, 2014 and an empty night at the carnival.  As you can see, recent rains had formed puddles in [...]

Moonlit Reflection at Fort Beach

The unseasonably warm weather this weekend made Spring feel as though it was just around the corner.  As the warm air began to give way to slightly cooler weather this week, I spotted the chance for a good sunset and decided to head out to capture the scene from Fort Sewall.  Before I left, I noted that the nearly full moon was due to rise at 4:30pm (an hour before sunset) and thought I would aim for a shot of it as well since I wouldn't get the chance tomorrow night. I arrived at Fort Beach and found thick clouds [...]

Sunset Reflection to Welcome the New Year – First Sunset of 2016

New Years Day ended up being quite busy with a morning outing to capture the sunrise and an invitation for my son and I to go roller skating with several other families from Marblehead in the afternoon.  As we returned from that outing, I noted the sun breaking through clouds and some great light hitting the ocean.  I convinced my son to come out with me to capture the first sunset of 2016 and we were off. Our first stop was Bass Rock Lane which is very close to the house and offered the best chance for a shot of the light [...]
