Pancake Ice at Stramski Beach

On Tuesday night I decided to head out to Stramski Beach before sunset hoping to capture images of a frozen Salem harbor only to find picture perfect pancake ice all around me. I spent an hour exploring compositions including the Stramski pier and close ups of the ice.  As the sun set and the temperature dipped to single digits, the sky lit up with a beautiful and incredibly long sunset. I shot frame after frame but was immediately drawn to this one with the pier and bare trees framing the scene and the pancake ice reflecting the colors of sunset. [...]

Goodnight 2017 – Frozen New Years Eve Sunset

This was truly a frozen New Years Eve sunset as I braved an insanely cold wind coming off the frozen harbor to capture my last sunset of 2017.  I decided to head out in part to capture the chunks of ice that had formed along this part of the harbor and hoped the clouds would break for a nice sunset to help say 'Goodnight 2017'. I started off shooting around 3:40pm and only lasted 10 minutes before the cold forced me to retreat into the car.  Despite dressing warmly in multiple layers, the 20 mph winds (and -15F wind chills) [...]

Top 10 of 2017 – #6 Sunset Sky over Marblehead Harbor

This is one of only two aerial images that made it into my top 10 list for 2017 which surprised me a bit.  Aerial photography using the Phantom 4 Pro opened up a whole new world of compositions for me and allowed me to capture Marblehead in ways I had only dreamed of before.  Today's image was captured on September 10, 2017 at 6:58pm.  It seems crazy to think that sunsets took place at 7pm only a few months ago as we are stuck in the short days of winter and 4pm sunsets now. On this particular day, I lucked [...]

November Sunset at Crocker Park

Last night, I watched the clouds take shape over Marblehead and decided to head out just before sunset to capture what promised to be a good show.  I had a tough time deciding on a destination and ended up at the Landing.  I shot from near the Harbormaster's station until the light began to fade over the harbor and looked over my shoulder only to find an explosion of color over Crocker Park. I ran up Mariner Lane, across Front Street and then behind the Herreschoff Castle to reach my favorite spot at Crocker Park.  I quickly set up the [...]

The Brick Oil House and Abbot Hall

On October 22nd, I followed the clouds and light to Chandler Hovey Park only to watch the sun disappear behind the thickening clouds before putting on a proper show.  As I walked back to the car, I looked back and spotted this composition I had not previously captured.  There was something appealing about the two brick structures - the brick oil house and Abbot Hall on either ends of the frame with a bare tree in between.

One Last Sail in October

This was the last photo I captured on Sunday when I headed out in search of foliage.  As the day came to an end, I found myself on Chandler Hovey Park set up for a promising sunset.  As I aimed my camera at Abbot Hall, I spotted a lone sailboat heading out for one last sail on this late October evening.  I adjusted my composition as the boat inched closer and fired off this shot as the sailboat floated into the perfect location. The scattered boats on their moorings are a vivid contrast from the peak of Summer but with [...]

Sunset Flight over Marblehead

What do you do when the sky explodes in color all around but you're at home without enough time to drive to a good spot? Fly 400 feet straight up and capture this incredible view over the Atlantic and Boston skyline! I arrived home a little after 5:30 this evening and caught a quick glance at the sky wondering if the clouds might break in time for sunset.  I didn't think much more of it as I sat in my office until I saw a bit of light hit the tall tree across the street and checked the webcams around [...]

Catching some Rays at the BYC

I've had a backlog of images waiting to be processed and finally found some time to go through them this week.  Yesterday, I happened upon this one that I had nearly forgotten about from early August.  I had gone out that day intending to fly the drone in a few new spots around town.  I began shooting over Barnegat and Little Harbor before ending up at Crocker Park. As the sun began to set, I moved over the water to explore the views and found that when I hovered over the BYC, I could capture the sun descending directly behind [...]

Floating on Sunset at Ladys Cove in Marblehead

Today's image comes from the Summer of 2013 and a project to capture the sunset cannons firing at each yacht club around Marblehead Harbor.  On this particular June evening, I had ventured out to the Dolphine Yacht Club and captured a small rainbow in the sunset sky.  As I finished shooting the rainbow and cannon firing, I turned my head towards Ladys Cove and spotted this small dock at low tide. At the angle of the dock, it appeared to be floating on sunset as boats on their moorings filled the waters as far as the causeway. I asked on [...]

Catching the Sunset at Chandler Hovey Park

As the sun set on September 10th, I quickly flew my drone back from its spot over the green buoy at the mouth of the harbor to Chandler Hovey Park.  I returned just in time to angle the camera toward the familiar landmark of Marblehead Light and lucked out with a slight gust of wind that set the flag flying in the air. It wasn't until I returned home that I discovered the best part of the image - silhouettes of people enjoying and catching the sunset themselves.  As you look around the scene, you'll find a number of silhouettes [...]
