Dinghy Under the Moon at Sunset

This seemed like a perfect image to start off what is supposed to be a beautiful, warm, Summer weekend.  The image comes from the evening of June 2nd and a trip to the Rockett Landing off Village Street.  I shared a photo captured from the top of the pier earlier but had taken this one shortly before walking back up to the road. I was struck by the light first and foremost and decided on a vertical orientation so that the crescent moon could be included in the final frame with the dinghy tied up for the night.

Watching the Sunset at the OPCL

I headed out last night in hopes of a repeat of the previous night's spectacular sunset (which I wasn't able to photograph) and decided to try out two new spots from which I had yet to capture any images over these past six years. I started off at Wyman Cove and then headed off to Overlook Road.  I had planned to end up along the road at the water's edge of Waterside Cemetery but misjudged and ended up on Overlook Road.  There I found a beautiful pier belonging to the OPCL (Ocean Park Civic League) and asked some of the [...]

Abbot Tower and a Full Harbor

Today's image comes from July 16, 2013 and a boat trip in and around Marblehead Harbor. We made it into the harbor during sunset and I proceeded to compose and capture shot after shot.  I couldn't pass up the unique vantage points from water level looking past boats in their mooring toward Abbot Tower standing tall in the distance. With the tower currently shrouded by scaffolding and a red curtain, I thought it would be a good opportunity to revisit some of these images from the archives.  Enjoy.

The Base of Marblehead Light

We enjoyed a perfect weekend in Marblehead these past few days with warm temperatures, occasional clouds and enough activities in town to keep everyone busy.  As Sunday evening rolled around, I decided to head out and try to photograph the sunset in part to capture this moment.  I drove across the causeway and ended up at Chandler Hovey Park as I chased the light breaking through clouds. When I arrived, I walked the park as if seeing it for the first time as I found myself needing to rethink all of my old compositions now that the skyline was punctuated [...]

Seat for Sunset at Rockett Landing

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out on Monday night as elements in the sky lined up nicely and seemed ready to add up to a solid sunset.  Having lived off Village Street for our first few years in Marblehead, I knew the Rockett Landing (or Village Street Landing) well and had spent many sunsets capturing the light reflecting off the waters of Salem Harbor.  It had been at least a year since I had returned to this spot and so I decided to drive here on this particular evening. I reached Rockett Landing just as the [...]

Sunset from the Boston Yacht Club

Though I haven't been out shooting much in the past few weeks, it's almost as much fun to revisit images from my archive that have yet to see the light of day. This one was taken almost exactly one year ago (June 3, 2013) shortly after I captured the Boston Yacht Club cannon firing at sunset.  As I turned towards the causeway and Skinner Head, I spotted a nice cloud formation and streaks of clouds serving to accentuate the colors of sunset. Between the image from one of Marblehead's yacht clubs and the official first day of Summer having just [...]

Sunset over Riverhead Beach

Riverhead beach feels like the Rodney Dangerfield of Marblehead's beaches - 'No Respect'.  With its location directly across Ocean Avenue from Devereux Beach, it is often overlooked by beach-goers.  Riverhead beach does offer a number of opportunities that its big brother across the road cannot - calm waters, a launch for boats and abundant sea glass.  Its coast is also filled with S curves that make for some great compositions. This image was captured on the last day of November in 2013.  I was out chasing the clouds you see featured prominently in the sky when I decided on this [...]

Sunset over Marblehead and some Creative License

When working on images of Marblehead, I allow myself some creative license in cloning out elements that are distracting to the scene.  This might mean filling in a bald patch of grass, removing litter that I hadn't spotted at the time to physically pick up or, in the case of the harbor, removing buoys and mooring markers.  While a filled harbor will remain untouched by my clone brush, an empty or not-yet-filled one often looks better after removing many of these markers. In the case of this image, there was one other element that I felt justified in removing - [...]

Pink Sunset over Marblehead Harbor filled with Boats

After the incredible weather that we experienced on Mother's Day and with today's expected continued warmth, it's only a matter of time before Marblehead Harbor is filled with boats.  This was the view on an early June evening at sunset when a beautiful sky, made up of pinks reflected off clouds above, washed over Marblehead Harbor. I was standing on the Boston Yacht Club float on this particular evening as I had just captured an image of the cannon firing at sunset when this sunset began to take shape.  I stayed on the floating dock as the composition from water [...]

Marblehead Light

I had a tough time deciding on an image to share today.  The forecast is for 22 degrees and snow to start off this mid-April day which is depressing, frustrating and borderline ridiculous. I couldn't decide between a shot of snow showing that it could be worse or an image of boats in the harbor to get us over this hump in bad weather.  As I scrolled through the archive, I found this simple composition of Marblehead Light and decided it fit well. I've never shared an image of Marblehead Light without incorporating its full structure or at least the [...]
