Day 1 – Crashing Waves from the Steps of Castle Rock

With the storm now passed and all images processed, I find myself with nineteen images to share with you.  I struggled with which to start with and then decided to display photos as the storm unfolded.  So here we go with Day 1. On March 6th, the storm was still offshore but the wind had started.  I decided to head out with my son to Castle Rock at high tide to see if we could spot any big waves.  As soon as we walked down toward the big rock, we saw the sea spray sail over the stone wall and [...]

The Wave and the Causeway

The latest storm to hit our shores made landfall on Thursday, March 7th and the forecasters were predicting huge waves and storm surges at high tide. Though I had to drop off my son at school and be at work by 9, I figured there was enough time to sneak out of the house at daybreak and try to capture some storm shots. I headed out at 6:30 as the tide peaked and drove down to Devereux Beach. I figured if the waves weren't great there, I would keep going to Castle Rock or head up to the Barnacle. When [...]

Long Exposure – Misty Waves at Castle Rock

It's Long Exposure Tuesday and this week features an image from Castle Rock taken on December 21st.  I can't remember if a storm had just come through or just left but the waves were pounding at Castle Rock.  I decided to climb to the top of a rock for a more expansive view and had to watch for sea spray that was coming up to the level of the rock at one point!  As the sun started to set, my exposure got longer and I ended up with this favorite that took 176 seconds to capture.  Those crashing waves have [...]

November Sunset over Devereux Beach

Here is another image taken this past Sunday when all the elements seemed to line up to offer a great Fall sunset.  As the clouds developed overhead, I made my way down to Devereux beach and set about exploring the light and movement of the ocean.  I noted that, since Superstorm Sandy came and went, the sand seemed much finer and lacking the rocks that had always characterized this stretch of beach.  When I chose this spot for the image, I felt a bit like I was on another smooth beach in the Carolinas rather than Devereux in Marblehead.  Then [...]

Swirling Water at Castle Rock

I haven't shot a landscape image in a few weeks but that has 'forced' me to return to my archive of images and rescue some of these from the seemingly never ending waiting line before they see the light of day.  In this case, the image from Castle Rock at sunset dates back to June 11, 2008!  I had this image waiting to post but decided to rework it last night in preparation with some new techniques I had picked up over the past 4 years.  I was able to bring a bit more color into the sky and rock [...]

Greystone Beach After the Storm

For the past few days now, I've been chasing Sandy's effects both during and after the storm's peak.  I had a feeling that one of these mornings might prove to be a decent one for a sunrise shoot and realized that this morning was just the one.  On Wednesday, I looked out and noted some nice clouds and a touch of pink in the sky.  I quickly got into the car and drove off only to turn around when I realized I had forgotten my tripod! I finally made it out and realized the light was changing fast.  Did a [...]

Exploding Waves at Castle Rock

After witnessing the power of Hurricane Sandy yesterday, I decided to head out again during the noon high tide to try to see if the remaining power of the storm might make for some interesting scenes.  As I drove across the causeway, the sky started to brighten and clear.  When I parked at Castle Rock, I was awed by the size of the waves crashing to shore. The first image I captured was the one above with someone standing atop the rock and trying to capture the scene.  Next I walked over to get the southern view with huge rolling [...]

Hurricane Sandy Hits Marblehead

Hurricane Sandy came to Marblehead today and brought with her incredible winds and waves.  I managed to drive out during my lunch hour and hit Surf Street then Devereux beach followed by some time spent catching waves crash on to and over the causeway.  It was incredible to witness and capture the strength of this storm as it hit.  Hope you enjoy this look at the power of Hurricane Sandy.

Sandy Meets Surf Street

As Hurricane Sandy makes her approach, the strength of the storm is starting to show.  I went out today to shoot some long exposures at high tide (and am working on those now) but I couldn't resist grabbing a few shots of the waves hammering the sea wall.  This is a shot from Surf Street which definitely earned its name today.  Caught this one wave as it exploded and sent off a great curl back out to sea.

Long Exposure – Sit and Watch the Waves at Preston Beach

I told you that 'long exposure Tuesday' was back ; )  With the waves that came from an offshore storm in early September, I decided to head to Preston beach and see what I could do with the action at high tide.  As the waves weren't crashing as expected, I decided to change my approach and shoot long exposure images instead.  For this one, I found a chair (as well as socks, shoes and pants) facing the ocean and decided to use that as the focal point.  This is a relatively short 'long exposure' at only 15 seconds but it [...]
