Lighting up the Eastern Yacht Club during the Harbor Illumination

While the Marblehead fireworks display is an impressive show (and this year's seemed especially awesome), I'm a much bigger fan of the harbor illumination that immediately precedes it.  One of the reasons I decided to shoot from the Pleon this year was its multiple vantage points for capturing the red flares encircling and illuminating Marblehead harbor. As the flares began to glow at 8:45pm, I shot toward Abbot Hall and then worked my way around.  Before long, there appeared a nearly endless display of glowing flares around the Eastern Yacht Club.  With the flares along the pier in the foreground, [...]

Fireworks over Marblehead Harbor

Earlier today, I shared images taken during past fireworks shows and realized there was a perfect spot on the Neck from which I could capture this year's fireworks over Marblehead harbor.  I made sure to scout out this spot at the Pleon Yacht Club earlier in the day during high tide to figure out compositions that would be available tonight.  Shortly after 8pm, I left the party we had been attending on the Neck (site of the 2015 fireworks shots) and biked down to Foster Street. I arrived in time to capture the harbor illumination with flares on either side [...]

Marblehead Fireworks – Best Places to Watch the Show

After ten years of shooting the Marblehead fireworks display, I realized I haven't create a single page from which one could find the best places to watch what is easily the best show on the Fourth of July.  Below you will find photos from each of the major locations around Marblehead Harbor from which to watch the Independence day celebration that takes place each year on July 4th beginning with a harbor illumination beginning at around 8:45pm and the fireworks display at 9:00pm. Check the map at the bottom of the page for each location. [...]

Concerts at Crocker Park – A Festival of Arts Tradition

It's hard to believe that the Fourth of July is nearly upon us and with it the Marblehead Festival of Arts.  As part of this incredible tradition, music is offered daily in concerts at Crocker Park.  The full schedule can be found here: Concerts at Crocker Park  Today's image was captured on the night of July 2nd, 2015 during one of the concerts and a beautiful Summer sunset.  The view of Crocker Park packed with people should help convince anyone that Marblehead is the best place to enjoy the Fourth of July.

Piers of Gold in Marblehead Harbor

I apologize if the Sting song 'Fields of Gold' becomes stuck in your head when reading this image title but Piers of Gold just fit too well to pass up.  This is the third image shared so far from last Thursday's flight over Marblehead Harbor.  As the sun dipped lower toward the horizon, the golden hour washed Marblehead Neck in perfect light.  I maneuvered the Phantom 4 Pro over these two docks and composed the image to include the Neck circling toward the Corinthian and Marblehead Light beyond while including the boats in the harbor reflecting the light of sunset.

Best of Show – Marblehead Festival of Arts

I am thrilled and humbled to announce that one of my entries 'In a Fog on State Street' has been awarded Best of Show at the 2017 Marblehead Festival of Arts.  Both this image and 'Light Dawns on Marblehead' will be on display at Old Town House beginning on Friday, June 30th after the awards ceremony at Abbot Hall.  The photography display ends on Tuesday, July 4th. This year's entry was the third in a series of black and white fog landscapes in Marblehead that began with 'A Walk in the Fog' which won Best of Show at the 2012 [...]

Lightning Storm over Marblehead Harbor

What an incredible night and an epic lightning storm over Marblehead Harbor.  I left the house a little after 7pm hoping to capture lightning from Chandler Hovey park but kept missing bolts during the first storm.  As the rain pelted the Neck, I waited in my car and saw another storm heading our way on the radar. As I waited, I noted pink hues forming near the horizon and moved to a favorite spot on Corinthian Lane from where I captured a very nice sunset over the harbor.  Just as the sunset light faded, the real show began and I [...]

Castle Rock on Marblehead Neck

This image of Castle Rock on Marblehead Neck was captured on Wednesday, June 20th shortly after I shot the wider panorama encompassing the whole of the Neck.  While the panorama afforded a birds eye view of the Neck and harbor beyond, I really like this close up of Castle Rock for its unique view of the rocky outcropping. For all the times I have shot from atop the rock or used it in a composition, this view of the rock itself has eluded me.  With the clouds above and boats beyond, Castle Rock's central location along the Neck is accentuated [...]

Solar Flare over Marblehead Harbor

On Thursday night, I had set up at Harvard Street with my main camera on a tripod and the Phantom 4 Pro overhead to capture what promised to be a solid sunset.  As the sun dipped lower in the sky, I turned the drone so that the sunlight washed across the front lens creating a solar flare and bathing the scene in a red glow. The view of boats filling the moorings in Marblehead Harbor is one of the main reasons I purchased the drone.  Capturing them from the air creates a separation and depth to the final image that [...]

Liquid Gold in Marblehead Harbor

Well, this Summer sure is off to a great start!  I went out to grab dinner at Mino's while my wife and kids were at a friend's house and then drove across the causeway with an eye to the sky.  Clouds had been forming and breaking since I got home and there looked to be a clearing near the horizon that slowly great larger as the sun set. I started off at Corinthian Lane, then at Peabody Lane before deciding to shoot from Harvard Street tonight.  I set up the camera on a tripod and then ran to the car [...]
