Blue Hydrangeas and Marblehead Harbor

What a difference three years makes.  I first spotted the blue hydrangeas on Peabody Lane in July 2011 and captured an image of the hydrangeas and Marblehead Harbor in the distance on an early July morning.  I had gone back each year but seemed to miss the peak of the flowers or caught poor light. On July 27, I had been chasing a sunset developing over Marblehead Harbor when I passed Peabody Lane and spotted the blue hydrangeas in full bloom.  I stopped while the sun was still fairly high in the sky but with clouds and haze serving to [...]

Devereux Beach Playground in the Fog

July 21st brought with it incredibly dense fog that one local described to me as a 'smokey sou'wester'.  I began photographing the fog at Grace Oliver beach and then made my way around Beacon Street.  When all of those compositions were exhausted, I made my way to Devereux Beach hoping for some foggy scenes along the ocean. By the time I arrived, the sun had started to move closer to the horizon and, with the dense fog, it appeared huge in the diffused light.  As I walked down the beach, I spotted this backlit scene of the Devereux Beach playground [...]

Let the Light Shine Through

I've shared two images from last week's incredible light display over Marblehead Harbor...here's the third.  On Monday, a fairly large system moved to the North of Marblehead just as sunset approached and I headed across to Marblehead neck after work to see if some light might shine through the clouds.  I had decided to shoot from the pier off Foster Street to allow the most flexibility as I wasn't sure which way the light might show. As luck would have it, a small break appeared in the clouds and the sunlight escaped for the briefest moment to light up what [...]

Infrared Marblehead – Along the Rail Trail

I haven't shared an infrared black and white image of Marblehead in some time and figured it would be a nice change of pace from the recent sunsets. In mid-June I went out on a bike ride around town with my modified infrared camera and found perfect conditions for capturing infrared images of Marblehead.  This image comes from the start of the bike ride when I found a great tree trunk bent at a funny angle along the Rail Trail.  The beauty of infrared is found when capturing foliage and seeing the leaves take center stage with brilliant whites.  The [...]

Catching the Sunset at Marblehead Light

On July 21st, I headed out when dense fog descended on Marblehead and captured a number of scenes around Little Harbor and Redd's Pond.  From there, I decided to head to Chandler Hovey Park hoping for a nice sunset given the fog and building clouds. By the time the sun set, much of the fog had dissipated but some haze remained to diffuse the light of the sun.  I found a number of kids climbing the base of Marblehead Light and, rather than finding another vantage point, decided to incorporate the people in this composition. In this image, a boy's [...]

All Along the Causeway

For months, Marblehead has rallied around one special girl with cancer.  When word spread that her favorite color was blue and a simple request made to put up a blue ribbon to brighten her day, the community response was overwhelming.  Trees, houses, schools, fire trucks, garbage trucks all began sporting a variety of blue ribbons. Today, the Make a Wish foundation and a number of locals put on a show of support.  Megan was to be driven around Marblehead inside of a white limo on her way to her own premiere at the Warwick Theater in town to celebrate with [...]

Sun Star After the Storm

We have had some incredible light this past week and, as luck would have it, my son is at sleep-away camp so I have more time to go out and capture the amazing sunsets that have taken shape over Marblehead Harbor. Monday saw the first confirmed tornado touch down in Essex county (Revere) along with a steady stream of thunderstorms.  Thankfully, most missed Marblehead to the North but the clouds that accompanied the activity suggested yet another epic sunset. I headed out to Marblehead Neck and, with clouds exploding all around me, decided to stop along Foster Street for the [...]

Last Night’s Sunset from Peabody Lane

After hours of rain fell on Sunday and with more rain predicted for today, I wondered if I might catch a solid sunrise in the gap between storms.  As I drove out to Marblehead Neck, I noted clouds just above the horizon in my rear view mirror and the start of a yellow glow forming from the setting sun. I decided to shoot the sunset from Peabody Lane as I hadn't been on that public way in some time.  I started off at the top of the stairs leading to the small beach below but quickly decided the better composition [...]
