Devereux Beach in the Fog

This seemed an appropriate image for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.  Some time after capturing yesterday's image of fog, light and shadows at Old Burial Hill, I had wondered down to Devereux Beach to see if the fog offered interesting vantage points near the ocean.  I found that the ocean seemed to disappear only a few feet from shore into that grey expanse and decided to set up a straight shot to accentuate the effect of the familiar beach in the fog. I waited for a wave to come ashore and captured this simple image.  There was an odd glow [...]

The Sky Exploded Last Night at Crocker Park

With the near-90 degree temperatures that descended on Marblehead yesterday and the early forecast for possible thunderstorms, I had a feeling the sky might offer some nice colors at sunset.  With that in mind, I made sure to throw the camera bag and tripod in the car when we headed out for an early dinner with friends.  After the check came and was paid, I took off toward Crocker park while my wife, kids, and friends headed to Seaside for the evening's Movie in the Park. I was actually hoping for some nice clouds over Marblehead Harbor to reflect the [...]

M is for Marblehead

Another image from Sunday's dawn and sunrise photoshoot at Crocker Park.  I had just captured those great clouds overlooking Marblehead Harbor in the deepest part of the blue hour and the light had not yet brightened enough over Marblehead Light and so I decided to walk up to the grassy area at Crocker Park.  Almost immediately, I found those some clouds hovering between the gazebo and Abbot Hall in the distance. As you may know, Abbot Hall is currently undergoing some restorative work on its tower and, as such, scaffolding and red netting have surrounded the iconic structure.  With the [...]

Marblehead Harbor in the Blue Hour

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I hadn't captured the sunrise (let alone the blue hour preceding it) in over 3 months and had decided to make up for it on Sunday.  As I drove toward Crocker Park, I noted some great clouds in the night sky and hoped they would stay for the sunrise. I arrived at my destination and made my way up the small hill to Crocker Park where I first took in the view of Marblehead Harbor in the blue hour looking out toward Marblehead Light.  I walked down the path to the float for a [...]

First Light on Marblehead Harbor

It had been three months since I last woke up before the sunrise and went out to capture images at dawn in Marblehead.  On Sunday morning, I had decided to make up for last time and headed out of the house at 5:00am. I had checked the predicted location for sunrise and decided to drive to Crocker Park to capture the morning's first light on Marblehead Harbor.  I arrived as the last stars in the sky were starting to fade and lighter shades of blue colored the morning sky.  I captured scenes of the brightening light on Marblehead Harbor for [...]

Black Joe’s Pond in Infrared

Thought I would end the week with this image of Black Joe's Pond taken with the aid of a modified dSLR.  The camera was adjusted so that it would record infrared light.  The result is that foliage appears bright and the sky and water are rendered quite dark.  When converted to black and white, the effect is even more dramatic. The only problem with choosing black and white for this image is that the red house at the far end of Black Joe's pond seemed to disappear.  I decided to selectively restore the color there to it's natural red.

From the Lighthouse – Boats Passing in the Ocean

Back to the top of Marblehead Light for this From the Rooftops Thursday view.  I shared a few images overlooking Marblehead Harbor from this unique vantage point but had also tried to find other compositions while standing at the highest point in Marblehead. This view of the tip of Chandler Hovey Park seemed to be missing something with the large expanse of ocean but then two boats passed  before me and I captured the scene with a much-needed element.

Blue Light over Marblehead Harbor

Today's image comes from July 28 and the incredible light show at sunset that saw a wide range of colors erupting over Marblehead Harbor.  At one point, a beautiful blue showed in the space between the clouds and horizon with golden light reflecting off the cumulus clouds onto the water below. I had been shooting from the pier at the Pleon Yacht Club and so I could quickly adjust to the light as it moved across the harbor.  I only fully appreciated the intensity of the blue light over Marblehead harbor when I loaded this image on my return home [...]

A Tree Lined Path in the Fog

On July 21, dense fog descended on Marblehead in what one local described as a Smokey Sou'Wester.  The fog was thick near the water but would clear quickly inland.  I had left my car on Beacon Street near Grace Oliver beach and walked with the camera and tripod around the bend toward Fountain Park. I passed this small road lined by trees and recalled shooting this scene in similar conditions years ago.  It was a foggy day but much later in the year with many of the trees bare and had chosen a horizontal orientation. On this day, I decided [...]

Foggy Sunset at Marblehead Harbor

It feels great to be back!  Our planned vacation on the Cape could not have come at a better time with the stress of the book having peaked in the week before while trying to deliver nearly 500 books to places near and far.  As I ventured out to capture scenes throughout Cape Cod, I kept realizing how much I missed shooting landscapes in Marblehead and just how beautiful those scenes back home were. With that in mind, I decided to share this foggy sunset at Marblehead harbor captured in mid-July.  We had been experiencing a fair amount of fog [...]
