Sunset over Riverhead Beach

Riverhead beach feels like the Rodney Dangerfield of Marblehead's beaches - 'No Respect'.  With its location directly across Ocean Avenue from Devereux Beach, it is often overlooked by beach-goers.  Riverhead beach does offer a number of opportunities that its big brother across the road cannot - calm waters, a launch for boats and abundant sea glass.  Its coast is also filled with S curves that make for some great compositions. This image was captured on the last day of November in 2013.  I was out chasing the clouds you see featured prominently in the sky when I decided on this [...]

Dawn of the Summer Season

The unofficial start of the Summer season begins at dawn on Memorial Day as captured in this image taken at Crocker Park.  Yesterday I posted the first image from my Memorial Day dawn shoot at Crocker Park with a beautiful crescent moon hanging over Marblehead Light.  This was one of the last images I took on that morning. The light kept building but an unfortunate cloud bank kept the sun from entering the scene as I kept trying out varying compositions.  At 5:10 am (40 minutes after the crescent moon image), the light finally heat its peak. I sought to [...]

Leave the Light On under a Crescent Moon

I went to sleep on Sunday night after checking forecasts for the morning and thinking there was a descent chance at a good sunrise.  The chance wasn't quite high enough for me to set an alarm but I figured that if I woke in time, I would head out the door. Sure enough I woke at 4am and took that as a sign of good things to come.  I had mapped out the direction of the sunrise and decided that Crocker Park would offer the best vantage point.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how much Marblehead Harbor had filled [...]

Glover’s Regiment Fires a Salute on Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend has finally arrived and with it comes the promise of Summer with pools opening around town, boats heading to their moorings in Marblehead Harbor and the days getting longer and warmer. As part of the Memorial Day parade, the Glover's Regiment marches to Memorial park and fires a salute in memory of those whose sacrifices we remember on this day. This image was captured last year as the old muskets fired - in the case of a few rifles, you can see a significant flame erupt as well.

Sunset over Marblehead and some Creative License

When working on images of Marblehead, I allow myself some creative license in cloning out elements that are distracting to the scene.  This might mean filling in a bald patch of grass, removing litter that I hadn't spotted at the time to physically pick up or, in the case of the harbor, removing buoys and mooring markers.  While a filled harbor will remain untouched by my clone brush, an empty or not-yet-filled one often looks better after removing many of these markers. In the case of this image, there was one other element that I felt justified in removing - [...]

Dawn over Marblehead Harbor

I had considered heading out this morning for a dawn/sunrise shoot but the forecast seemed to call for clear skies which usually lead to fairly boring color.  Instead, I found this image from a dawn shoot in early August of last year to share. As this was taken in mid-Summer, Marblehead Harbor is filled to capacity with boats on their moorings.  The colors of this dawn morning reflected beautifully in the waters of the harbor and the streaks of clouds above. It won't be much longer before we can count on regular warm days and can revisit Marblehead Harbor filled [...]

Behind the Red Door – Fort Sewall

How about an image from almost exactly three years ago on this Tuesday morning?  I had always wondered what was behind the red door at Fort Sewall and wound up finally being able to see the other side of this one two years later when the Fort was open during the annual encampment.  Turns out there are some stairs leading down to parts of the Fort that are accessible behind the iron gates seen from the entrance. After imagining the secrets that lay behind these doors with incredible rust and patina, the answer was a bit of a let down...

Red Sky at Morning over Greystone

This image comes from April 23rd and a surprisingly productive dawn photo shoot that began along Bass Rock Lane.  From here, there is a great vantage point of the houses in Greystone that line the shores of Marblehead.  I couldn't help but add in that old adage: Red sky at morning, sailors take warning; Red sky at night, sailors' delight.

Last Night at Chandler Hovey Park

For every vibrant sunrise and spectacular sunset that I share, there are an equal number of muted events such as last night at Chandler Hovey Park.  I had noted the gathering clouds from my house at around 7pm and then saw the sun start shining through breaks in the clouds.  I thought that the sky had about even odds of blowing up or fizzling out and decided to head out in hopes of the former. I drove to the causeway from which I could better evaluate the sky and became less sure of those odds.  The clouds had disappeared over [...]

From the Rooftops – Hidden Window at Jeremiah Lee Mansion

It's back to the Jeremiah Lee Mansion for today's From the Rooftops entry.  I had finished capturing images from the cupola atop the mansion and descended the stairs when I looked behind me and saw light peeking through a window.  The area I entered was a bit bigger than a crawl space and served as the attic for the old building.  I ducked under a few beams and found myself standing before this semicircular window overlooking the shops along Washington Street. Hope you enjoy the view from an early morning in April from this hidden window at the Jeremiah Lee [...]
