Orange Dinghy in Marblehead Harbor

A simple image to get everyone ready for the weekend and the return of warm weather.  I had spotted this orange dinghy tied up at Tucker's Wharf as we waited to board the Hannah Glover for a trip around Children's Island this past Saturday.  I just couldn't pass up the chance to capture the vibrant orange dinghy against the near black waters of Marblehead Harbor.

Marblehead Harbor and the Red Cloaked Tower

On Tuesday, a storm approached Marblehead to the south and I thought I would try to capture some dramatic clouds and light.  I drove across the causeway to Marblehead Neck and scouted a number of vantage points and captured a few images at each.  In the end, a walk to the end of Peabody Lane and the public right of way there led me to this spot where all the elements came into place under some very nice light.  All except one... Abbot Hall tower is currently cloaked in red with scaffolding along its full height as much-needed repairs are [...]

Marblehead from the Water

Nothing quite matches the view of Marblehead from the water - a fact I was reminded of during a boat tour around Children's Island put on by the YMCA.  We boarded the Hannah Glover on Saturday under perfect conditions and departed for the Children's Island orientation.  While it was great to see the back of Children's Island (I shared an image of that yesterday), I was anticipating a few new compositions on our return to shore. Thankfully, the clear blue skies present at departure had given way to a few clouds close to the horizon and one errant one that [...]

Children’s Island

On Saturday, the YMCA chartered the Hannah Glover for a circumnavigation of Children's Island and orientation for new campers.  We hopped on board as my daughter will be there for a session this Summer and enjoyed perfect conditions. Normally, we would have docked for a walk around the island but the dock was not yet operational for the season so, instead, we were treated to this view of the back of Children's Island.  I had never seen it from this vantage point and tried to capture the full length of the island.  The subtle clouds forming a diagonal in the [...]

The Base of Marblehead Light

We enjoyed a perfect weekend in Marblehead these past few days with warm temperatures, occasional clouds and enough activities in town to keep everyone busy.  As Sunday evening rolled around, I decided to head out and try to photograph the sunset in part to capture this moment.  I drove across the causeway and ended up at Chandler Hovey Park as I chased the light breaking through clouds. When I arrived, I walked the park as if seeing it for the first time as I found myself needing to rethink all of my old compositions now that the skyline was punctuated [...]

The Mooring

For a while, I ran an 'Experimental Friday' theme and thought I would see what everyone thought of this image.  Taken shortly after dawn on Memorial Day this year.  I've shared two other landscapes from that morning but couldn't help capturing this simple composition of the mooring with the great light reflecting off the waters of Marblehead Harbor.

From the Rooftops – Bank Square and Marblehead Harbor

Time for another entry in the 'From the Rooftops Thursday' theme and back to the cupola of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion.  For this image, I decided to move the camera as close to the window as possible and compose an image of Bank Square seen below and Marblehead Harbor beyond with the sun's light diffused by a large cloud.  This is how my eyes took in the scene and how I envisioned it but for technical reasons, the image needed to be composed of two shots with different focus points. A bit on the technical aspects of the image: This [...]

Seat for Sunset at Rockett Landing

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out on Monday night as elements in the sky lined up nicely and seemed ready to add up to a solid sunset.  Having lived off Village Street for our first few years in Marblehead, I knew the Rockett Landing (or Village Street Landing) well and had spent many sunsets capturing the light reflecting off the waters of Salem Harbor.  It had been at least a year since I had returned to this spot and so I decided to drive here on this particular evening. I reached Rockett Landing just as the [...]

Fort Beach in the Blue Hour

Last night felt like the first of many great Summer nights to come.  The temperatures had soared during the day and I had noticed promising clouds as the kids' bedtime approached.  After reading to my son, I took a look out the window and figured I would head out to try to capture an image of the sun setting. I started off at Rockett Landing off Village street and was very happy with the way the light reflected off the clouds overhead and the waters of Salem harbor.  That image needs another day or so of work so I opted [...]

Sunset from the Boston Yacht Club

Though I haven't been out shooting much in the past few weeks, it's almost as much fun to revisit images from my archive that have yet to see the light of day. This one was taken almost exactly one year ago (June 3, 2013) shortly after I captured the Boston Yacht Club cannon firing at sunset.  As I turned towards the causeway and Skinner Head, I spotted a nice cloud formation and streaks of clouds serving to accentuate the colors of sunset. Between the image from one of Marblehead's yacht clubs and the official first day of Summer having just [...]
