A Natural Infinity Pool on Marblehead Neck

In the Summer of 2013, we were invited to a certain house on the neck being rented by friends (now neighbors). It was actually our second time to this property on Fishing Point Lane and so I made sure to bring my camera as I had spied some interesting possibilities on our last time out. As the kids clambered on rocks, I wandered the property and found this shallow pool of water overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Tinker's Island in the distance.  At the right angle, the small collection of water took on the appearance of a natural infinity pool [...]

Sun Rays over Abbot Hall and The Importance of Backups

This morning, while at work, I received this automated email message from my backup software: "This file or folder is sitting on a bad section of hard disk media and is unrecoverable. Delete this item (i.e. in the Finder) and restore it from a known good backup, then try the backup task again." The files it was referring to (15 in all) were on my main external hard drive that holds all of my images from Wednesdays in Marblehead as well as every image of my children.  In fact, there are almost 100,000 images housed on that drive which is [...]

Pink Sunset over Marblehead Harbor filled with Boats

After the incredible weather that we experienced on Mother's Day and with today's expected continued warmth, it's only a matter of time before Marblehead Harbor is filled with boats.  This was the view on an early June evening at sunset when a beautiful sky, made up of pinks reflected off clouds above, washed over Marblehead Harbor. I was standing on the Boston Yacht Club float on this particular evening as I had just captured an image of the cannon firing at sunset when this sunset began to take shape.  I stayed on the floating dock as the composition from water [...]

Abbot Hall from Atop the Jeremiah Lee Mansion

Back to From the Rooftops Thursday and my trip to the cupola of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion.  Though the area is small, the 360 degree view through beautiful windows made for a number of photo opportunities. This image comes from a shot through the middle of one window facing back up Washington Street.  I had to use a technique called focus stacking to combine two images focused on the wood panel and then Abbot Hall in the distance in order to have both perfectly focused in the final image. A few more images from this unique location yet to come...

Clouds Reflecting in Marblehead Harbor at Dawn

Wednesday, April 23rd proved to be a surprisingly productive morning which began with an incredible sunrise captured from Bass Rock Lane.  After exploring a number of compositions there, I decided to drive out to Hammond Park as the gathering clouds promised a continuation of the great light I had been treated to. The view did not disappoint with calm waters serving to reflect the gathering clouds in Marblehead Harbor at dawn.  I tried a few different compositions here as well but liked the expansive view - especially with the sole boat moored in the harbor.

Foggy Night at the Marblehead Carnival

On Thursday, the annual Marblehead Carnival began and with it came rain.  It had rained for much of the day but stopped by dusk so I figured I would have to work for compositions around the crowd of people attending the fundraiser for the senior high school class. I arrived at Devereux Beach to find the carnival nearly empty and was thrilled to see not only puddles to use for reflections but also great fog.  Here are five images that captured the feel of a foggy night at the Marblehead Carnival.  Click any of the images below for a larger [...]

Rays of Light over Marblehead

On Saturday, the first Arts Fusion event took place at Abbot Hall as a fundraiser for the Marblehead Art Association and Marblehead Festival of Arts.  I had donated a framed print and copy of my to-be-published book and was excited to see the work on display. Before heading over there though, I noted clouds forming over the town and they seemed to be breaking up just enough to let some rays of light pass through.  I decided to drive out to Marblehead Neck to see if my hunch was right and discovered this scene from a vantage point on Corinthian [...]

Last Night at the Carnival

With the recent rains, I had already decided that I had to head to the carnival last night and then thick fog settled over Marblehead adding an extra dimension to the images I had envisioned.  I arrived at the Marblehead carnival as the blue hour of dusk came to an end and found a nearly deserted carnival with rides shining brightly in the fog but only a handful of people walking around. I didn't waste any time in exploring compositions including reflections in puddles and incorporating the eeriness of the fog.  The fact that the carnival was deserted on this [...]

Incredible Sunrise Reflecting on the Ocean

If there's one thing I've learned after five years and over 900 images taken of Marblehead, it is to never pass up an unintentional morning wake up.  And so it was that on Wednesday, April 23rd, when I woke for no good reason at 5:30am, I promptly got out of bed and checked the morning sky and weather forecast.  The latter called for mostly cloudy/overcast conditions and I worried that might block any chance of seeing the sunrise.  However, a quick look out the window suggested there might be a break at the horizon and I headed out the door [...]
