Little Harbor Sky

On July 30th, I headed out to chase after a rainbow with a storm passing overhead and found myself near the Little Harbor Lobster Company waiting to see what might come of the sunset. I was losing hope as the clouds seemed to be racing away but then spotted a huge cloud to my right heading towards the lighthouse just as another had come in from the left headed towards Gerry Island. I watched and waited as the clouds converged and then the sun dipped below the cloud cover and bathed the scent in soft sunset light. I was pretty [...]

A Study at Crocker Park

Next week will mark 10 years of Wednesdays in Marblehead with a video of my favorite images captured in the last decade to be shared on Wednesday, August 12.  As a prelude to that, this study at Crocker Park seemed the perfect opportunity to show how I can continue to shoot the same (or similar) scenes year after year and yet come away with enough differences to make each image unique. Today's shots were taken on July 1, 2015 - the first at 5:40pm and the second at 8:17pm. The location is almost identical, the [...]

Moonglow over Ram Island

I missed the full moon rising the other night but, as luck would have it, happened upon this unpublished shot of moonglow over Ram Island captured on August 29, 2015.  I had been disappointed with the lack of a clear shot of the face of the moon in this frame and relegated it to the 'to be published' folder but now really like the added glow created by the soft clouds. It seems to give the moon a bigger presence and the hint of reflected light in the water below balances the shot nicely.

End of the Rainbow

Back to that late June evening at Devereux Beach and the most vibrant rainbow I've ever seen in Marblehead. I shared a couple of wide shots of this rainbow but also captured some tighter compositions. I started off with only the rainbow, it's 'double' and the no wake sign in the frame but, when a family came into the frame with a water-skier, I knew I had to include them in this shot of the end of the rainbow.

Liberty & Co

This image was captured 20 minutes before Thursday night's incredible sunset when I had just arrived at the Little Harbor Lobster Company lot and was watching the sky hoping for a rainbow or some decent light. This was the first of the 'good light' and I decided on a tight composition including the three dinghies and lone sailboat near the channel marker.  It was only later when working on the image that I spotted the dinghy's name - Liberty.

Little Harbor – After the Storm

That was quite the storm that passed overhead before sunset! Our home weather station recorded rainfall of 3 inches per hour before the storm finally departed and, as soon as it did, I was in my car and headed out in search of a rainbow. I drove to Hammond Park and then decided to visit Little Harbor where I spotted the faintest rainbow overhead. It wasn't the image I hoped for but I spotted some interesting clouds coalescing behind Gerry Island and decided to watch and see if the sun might shine at the right moment to illuminate the scene. [...]

Gold Coast, Marblehead

Hard to believe that it was one month ago when I captured the best light of the summer at Devereux Beach. This was the night that I caught a full rainbow over the causeway and thought that would be the peak of light only to discover this incredible view of the Gold Coast on the shores of Devereux Beach twenty minutes later. This is the sixth image I will have shared from the hour spent running back and forth between the causeway and beach on June 24, 2020. I shot these two clouds from various angles and with differing compositions [...]

In the Wind

I am not a sailor. So when I was looking through my 'to be published' folder and spotted a bunch of small boats, I immediately thought 'oh, those must be Optis, I'll title this one Optis in the Wind'.  I set up the post and then, something nagged at me so I zoomed in and saw a big C420 on the sails.  Hmmm.... Well, the picture was still nice with the gathered boats under a nice cloud so I decided to go with it. The 'Opti' part of the title had to go so I was left with 'In the [...]

Beach Day

It's going to be a scorcher today so I hope you made plans to either stay inside with the AC on or are headed to a local beach such as Preston. With 90+ degree temps in the forecast, it really does feel like a great beach day. This aerial image of Preston beach was captured on August 6, 2017. I had shared some higher up shots previously but liked this lower one as it offered a different vantage point and allowed me to capture some of the clouds reflecting in the wet sand. Wherever you end up today, hope you [...]
