Afterglow of a Summer Storm

This was my last stop of the night on Wednesday August 19 after shooting at Riverhead, the Causeway, Fort Beach and Castle Rock. By the time I arrived at the Pleon Yacht Club, the sun had dipped below the horizon and I thought I had missed the best light. As I set up and composed a tighter shot, the afterglow of the summer storm seemed to breathe a second wind into the evening light and I captured this view of the harbor and Abbot hall in the distance.

Low Tide at Fort Beach

On Wednesday, I headed out the door to chase storms at Riverhead (that shot is coming tomorrow) before making my way to Fort Beach in the hopes of capturing a rainbow (I didn't but got one at Castle Rock an hour later).  While at Fort Beach, I wandered up and down Front Street in search of new compositions that did not rely on the Great Tree at the Fort. When i moved far enough over, I was able to hide the emptiness of Fort Sewall with some foliage while also lucking out with a scattered collection of boats at low [...]

Lightning Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

That was quite the lightning storm that passed over Marblehead tonight and I feel very fortunate to have lucked out with capturing this one bolt from along Corinthian Lane. Earlier in the evening, I watched as the storm approached but did not dare venture out based on the radar signature of deep reds and purples. I held hope that after the main storm passed, I still might have a chance to capture some of the action and, given the hour, maybe, just maybe a lightning sunset. As I left the house, I spotted a huge rainbow overhead but by the [...]

Fractured Clouds over Tinkers

On Wednesday night, I headed to Riverhead Beach as a storm approached Marblehead. I started off shooting the harbor at low tide but kept looking over my shoulder at dark storm clouds over Tinkers Island and the interesting tendrils underneath. I did some research after returning home and discovered these are called stratus fractus for their fractured appearance. The contrast between the dark clouds and dark ocean separated by the waning light of day behind Tinkers Island impressed me while standing on the causeway and was fun to process when I returned home.

Rainbow Sky over Castle Rock

What a night! I went out initially at 4:15pm after a storm passed south of Marblehead and came away with only one favorite. When I spotted another storm on the radar, I hesitated and debated if it was worth heading out once more and am very glad I did. I started off at Riverhead and along the causeway where I found a very dramatic and dark sky over Marblehead Harbor. I shot toward the harbor, across the causeway and towards Tinkers before the rain caught up with me and I had to hunker in the car. A quick check of [...]

White Lines at Castle Rock

Here we go again - this time all the way back to September 8, 2012 for this image of receding waves forming white lines along the shores of Castle Rock. As was the case on Monday and Tuesday, I have never been happy with this image - the white lines were never prominent as the focal point and the surf bathed in sunlight was too bright and stole focus. Again, I hit the 'reset' button and started over with end result finally matching what I had hoped. The white lines are my favorite part of the shot but the golden [...]

Weathered Tree at Chandler Hovey Park

The theme for this week seems to be shaping up as 'images that I wasn't happy with but finally figured out the right processing this weekend'.  This black and white image of a weathered tree at Chandler Hovey Park was captured on September 1, 2013. I was drawn to this composition in which the tree is able to steal focus from Marblehead Light in large part due to the curve of the clouds mimicking the canopy of the tree.  That being said, the processing never really worked out. I tried this in color and black and white and while the [...]

September Sunset

I spent this weekend at a virtual photography workshop put together by Sony and learned several new ways of processing images that I hadn't appreciated previously. As the instructors went over various tools in Lightroom, I chose some images from my 'to be posted' archive that I had never been all that happy with and tried my hand at reprocessing them. This September sunset captured last year from the end of Peabody Lane was one such image. The original edit of this shot was way too dark with much of the color in the evening sky lost and, my favorite [...]

Ten Years of Wednesdays in Marblehead

On August 14 2010, i shared my first image and created Wednesdays in Marblehead to help me discover my new hometown. Ten years later, I have shared more than 2,400 images, published a coffee table book and captured some unforgettable scenes of this beautiful town. These are my favorites. https://youtu.be/9hAxif3mNgc

Sea Smoke – Remastered

Just received a print order for one of my all time favorite images of sea smoke surrounding Marblehead Light and couldn't pass up a chance to remaster this shot from 2012. Here is the new version that I thought would be a perfect share as we face 90+ degree temperatures...again. 10 year retrospective coming tomorrow...
