Early Riser

Not one to leave well enough alone, I set my alarm for 4am on Saturday morning hoping for another opportunity to capture the comet Neowise. I wasn't quite sure where it might be in the pre-dawn sky so I pulled over at Riverhead beach and used the app to locate it. Unfortunately, the comet was too close to the horizon to be photographed and I was quickly gaining light and losing the chance to shoot the equivalent of a star in the early morning sky. With a camera in hand and this scene before me, I couldn't let the opportunity [...]

Neowise visits Marblehead Light

Last week, I started to see more and more images of the comet Neowise (C/2020 F3) posted by my photography friends. Most were in much darker locations but I wondered if I might have a chance of capturing the comet against the backdrop of a local landmark. I found an app called GoSkyWatch Planetarium that seemed very simple to use and helped me locate Neowise in the sky. Once that was done, I headed out on Thursday night and tried to plan out a shoot for when the clouds lifted. I thought my best chance might be at Chandler Hovey [...]

Ready to Sail – Marblehead Junior Race Week

With everything going on, I wasn't sure if the Marblehead Junior Race week would be taking place. I was glad to see that, with some changes (Optis and Lasers only), we will have a chance to watch young sailors race around the harbor. This image of a young sailor making her boat ready was captured on July 22, 2015. If you have a chance, head out to watch these races Monday through Wednesday of next week.

The Young Man and the Sea

While I waited for the moon to rise on July 4th, I decided to look out from the back side of Castle Rock towards Tinkers Island. From there I spotted a young man standing between waves coming ashore and fishing off the Neck. When the waves broke just right, they helped bring the man into contrast and I tried to time this shot to maximize the effect.  With Tinkers blurred slightly by the wide open aperture and picking up the last light of sunset, the photo had the feeling of a painting as soon as I clicked the shutter button.

Chandler Hovey Park and the Harbor

The thing about aerial images is that you don't always need to fly 200 or 400 feet above the ground. I quickly learned that bringing the drone off shore and raised a bit off the water provided some incredible compositions as in this shot captured on July 26, 2017. Just a typical summer day in Marblehead with a perfect view of Chandler Hovey Park, the harbor and Abbot Hall in the distance

Fog Rolls In

Two years ago, I decided to head to Riverhead beach in the hopes of capturing a nice aerial sunset but found fog instead. As it happened the fog rolling into the harbor and across the Neck made for a far more interesting display. I decided to convert the image to black and white to keep the focus on the texture of the fog and the contrast between it and the foliage on the Neck.

The Dolphin

We have been social members at the Dolphin Yacht Club for a few years and they have used some of my images from their pier on the website. I hadn't been able to capture a good image of the harbor facing facade until we went out for a dinghy ride on a hot June afternoon. As we passed the DYC, I quickly composed this scene to capture boats in the harbor, activity around the kayaks and stand up paddleboards, a waterfront team member waiting to take someone on a launch ride and a fairly busy outdoor seating area all backlit [...]

Bass Rock Sunset

This photo was taken 40 minutes after yesterday's rainbow over the causeway and lamp posts. After the rainbow disappeared, I was treated to an incredible sunset at Devereux Beach full of vibrant orange color. By 8:15pm, I had shot the same clouds from every angle imaginable and packed up to head home. As I drove down Atlantic Avenue, I noticed the sky turning shades of pink and quickly turned onto Rockaway Avenue and then walked out to the end of the public way at Bass Rock Lane where I saw this.  I couldn't decide between the tighter shot of the [...]

Rainbow and Old Glory

Today we go back to the causeway and an incredible outing from two weeks ago when I came upon a huge rainbow crossing from Marblehead neck across the causeway and near the midpoint of Devereux Beach. I started off shooting a panorama of the full rainbow from the causeway before turning toward the bright spot over the Atlantic and then circling back as the light shifted. At this point, the left side of the rainbow had peaked in intensity and shifted in position so that, from the end of the causeway, I was able to line it up with the [...]
