Blue
An overhead shot of this intensely blue dinghy seemed a nice way to end the week. I found this boat tied up in Little Harbor on Labor Day weekend.

On Monday, I shared an image of pre-sunset light bathing Marblehead Harbor in a soft gold. I had captured the shot from the Dolphin Yacht Club just as our dinner was brought out to the balcony. Upon seeing that light (and with two plates not yet out), I excused myself and headed down to the water for a few more quick shots. As it turned out, the light quickly disappeared as the sun hid behind cloud cover but the still water of the harbor created some really nice reflections. I shot a tight crop and a wide angle view of [...]
I shared an image of State Street last week looking down toward the water. That image was taken a few minutes after this one taken near the opposite end of State Street and looking back up toward Washington Street. I had been drawn out of the house by the deep blue sky punctuated by clouds and was thrilled to find them overhead from this spot along State Street. The long shadows helped cut down the shine of the road and drive the eye up toward the houses and sky. I was thrilled to see the light of the windows breaking [...]
I mentioned in yesterday's post that we had gone out for dinner before attending the first game of the season at Marblehead High School. We arrived in time to catch the first touchdown and then stayed for the entire game and another 7 touchdowns for a final score of 55-0 (one missed extra point). It was a great evening though colder than expected with the feel of autumn in the air. Here is one shot of a running play near the end of the game under Friday night lights at Marblehead High.
On Friday evening, we decided to go to the Dolphin Yacht Club for dinner before going to the high school for the first football game of the season. I had brought my camera bag with me in large part to take photos of my kids near the water before the game and was glad I had done so when a break in the clouds allowed the sun to wash Marblehead Harbor in beautiful sunset colors. The light almost perfectly covered the rows upon rows of boats moored in the harbor and I was able to pull up the shadows in [...]
I mentioned yesterday that I had walked along the causeway to find the right spot from which to capture the perfect blue sky over Marblehead Harbor. Having done so, I crossed to the other side and walked atop the causeway wall looking for interesting compositions before me. Devereux Beach was packed with people and I walked closer to find a nice shot of silhouettes against the bright light of day. As it happened, clouds passed overhead blocking the sun and I had to stay in one spot while waiting for better light. As I did, I looked down and watched [...]
On a hot Labor Day, I parked at Riverhead Beach and walked the length of the causeway trying to find the perfect spot to capture the deep blue sky over Marblehead Harbor. At around the mid-point, I found that I could line up Abbot Hall on the left, the edge of Marblehead Light on the right and seemingly endless masts of boats filling the space in between. With a big blue sky punctuated by white clouds overhead, I had the makings of a picture perfect summer day in Marblehead.
On Monday, in the middle of an incredibly hot Labor Day, I ventured out of the house having spied some clouds. Shooting in the middle of the day can be difficult with harsh light and strong shadows. I decided to head to historic downtown Marblehead first and noticed the mid-days sun casting shadows on State Street. I watched the traffic and crossed into the middle of the street briefly to capture the view of these historic home leading towards the landing where a large flag was caught in a gust of wind. From this direction, the sky held few clouds [...]
On Wednesday, August 8th, I headed out to shoot some aerial images around Castle Rock and shared one image with the drone a few feet above the waves. Shortly after taking that shot, I flew up to 400 feet and noticed fog developing over the Neck. I quickly flew down toward Flying Point and found this composition showcasing the fine layer of fog over the middle of Marblehead Neck with a lone boat moored off the coastline. You can just make out the lighthouse in the distance as well as boats in the harbor beyond.
On a mid-June evening, I headed to Harvard Street while chasing this sunset over Marblehead Harbor. I arrived in time to set up and decide on this composition that encompassed Abbot Hall to Grace Community Church with boats stacked up for sunset under the pink sky with golden light on the water. The focal length compressed and accentuated the feel of boats packed tightly in the harbor and captured the feel of a mid-summer evening in Marblehead.
