Summer is Over – Back to School

Today marks the first day of school and, with it, the unofficial end of summer. I shot this image of Veterans Middle School on a July day in 2013 and shared other compositions from this outing but never this one for some reason. I went back to it last night as my kids got ready for their first days of school (one at Vets) and realized the potential in the shot with a fresh set of eyes. With school officially in session, please take care as you drive through town (especially in the morning and early afternoon).

Red Moon at Night

This was the second of three favorites from last night's red moon rising over Chandler Hovey Park. Once the full Sturgeon moon appeared, I moved up and down Front Street to try to get different compositions. In this one, I shifted a bit to the left (toward Fort Sewall) and caught a nice trio of boats while still keeping the flagpole at Chandler Hovey in the frame. I'm curious which you prefer - last night's Red Moon Rising or this morning's Red Moon at Night.

Red Moon Rising

The full Sturgeon moon rose tonight over Chandler Hovey Park and I had very nearly given up on trying to capture it.  It was 7:30pm, we had just finished dinner, and I very nearly had forgotten about the moonrise. I quickly checked the weather report and saw that cloud cover was minimal. I then spent a few minutes trying to get motivated to shoot the moonrise and left the house with only the camera and tripod in hand. I arrived on Front Street with five minutes to set up and was starting to worry when I hadn't spotted the moon [...]

Historic Downtown Marblehead

Prior to purchasing the Phantom 4 Pro drone, I could only achieve these types of views from select spots around town. One of them was Abbot Hall and I was fortunate to be allowed on the scaffolding during the work to restore it a few years ago. Even with the freedom of the scaffolding, I still didn't have the freedom to compose as I do with this aerial camera and had missed out on these types of view. Historic downtown Marblehead (Old Town to some) is a treasure of architecture, locally owned stores, historic homes dating back hundreds of years [...]

Diving for Rainbows

I mentioned yesterday that I have not shot many (if any) storms this summer and ended up revisiting images taken back in August of 2015 to find an unshared shot of lightning. While in that folder, I found this image of a rainbow forming over Marblehead Harbor. I couldn't remember the specifics of this outing on August 4th, 2015 so I jumped into the folder where I keep my images and discovered I had taken 20 images between 3pm and 8:20pm on this day ranging from dark clouds over Marblehead Light to lightning near Abbot to rainbows over the harbor [...]

Twin Lightning at Preston Beach

As incredible as this summer has been, we have had very few impressive lightning storms. I decided to look back at images captured in August from years past that hadn't made it to the light of day and happened upon this two second exposure at Preston Beach in mid-August 2015. We had a very active storm pass by and I managed to capture several bolts of lightning by finding a composition, setting the aperture to f/22 and shutter speed to 2 seconds and then mashing the shutter release. I lucked out with twin lightning bolts in this shot under a [...]

Making Waves at Sunrise

I don't make it up early enough to catch most sunrises in the summer but when I do and when conditions turn out this amazing, I try to make the most of it. Today's image comes from the sunrise that wouldn't end on June 30th. I've shared a number of images from that morning including 'Sunrise Like Gold' that I just finalized as the June image for my 2019 Marblehead Calendar (going to press this week). After shooting several frames, a passing boat's wake created subtle waves that helped accentuate the reflections of light in Marblehead Harbor.

Just Another Marblehead Sunset

What does it say about this town when I look at this image taking on the evening of August 1st and the first thing that pops in my head is 'just another Marblehead sunset'? This image was captured a few minutes before two others that I shared from this night including 'the kids are alright'.  I've often shot sunsets with a slight change in position of Abbot Hall from the left to right third of the frame and noted that the subtle shift can create a wildly different composition. We've had a paucity of nice sunsets with the recent rains [...]

Eight Years of Wednesdays in Marblehead

Eight years ago today, I started this website with an image of fireworks and the following caption: 'I figured I would start off the blog with a bang (pardon the pun)!  The goal of this blog is to capture the beauty of the town of Marblehead, MA.  A new image will be posted every Wednesday so please follow me on Twitter or add the RSS feed for this page.'  Yes, this website predated Instagram and I don't think Facebook had yet allowed Pages at that point. We had moved to Marblehead in May 2008 and I had been exploring the [...]

Time Passes at Castle Rock

Tomorrow marks the 8 year anniversary of Wednesdays in Marblehead and I thought I would look in the 'to be posted' folder for the oldest image waiting to see the light of day. This shot was captured on June 11, 2008 (just over one month after we moved to Marblehead). I spent two years exploring Marblehead with my camera before deciding to start a blog and share these images with the world. Every year I look back and reflect on the journey that these images and this town have carried me on.  More to come tomorrow...
