Changing Colors at Seaside Park

As I picked up my kids from school yesterday, I stared at this maple tree at Seaside Park wondering if it might reach the peak colors that I've captured in years past. Whether it was the dry summer or other reasons, this particular maple doesn't look as vibrant as I recall from past visits and went into my 'to be published' folder to find this shot from October 4, 2014 for comparison. That year must have been a perfect one because every single leaf on the tree and on the ground was a picture perfect shade of red, orange or [...]

Over the Chestnut Tree at Crocker Park

Since discovering the beauty of the chestnut tree at Crocker Park when it hits peak bloom, I've tried to find new vantage points from which to capture it. On a late May evening, I flew my drone over Crocker Park just as the sunset hit its peak to capture this view of the chestnut tree and the Marblehead skyline illuminated by the pinks and blues of a spring sunset.

Last Days of Summer in Marblehead

As the nights turn cool, I wanted to take a look back at the last days of summer in Marblehead and found this shot captured from Brown's Island looking back toward town.  I had gone out to Brown's with my kids and met up with friends to enjoy a picture perfect Labor Day. At one point, we made our way to the tree swing and I took a few shots of my daughter swinging before turning towards this view. The juxtaposition of Abbot Hall and Old North Church makes for a great scene and the addition of boats moored in [...]

Explosion of Light

A lot can happen in two minutes...  That was the duration of time between Tuesday's post and today's image capturing the peak of the afterglow. At this point the sky erupted in an explosion of light with brilliant oranges washing the sky and reflecting in the water of Marblehead Harbor. The light hit its peak one minute later with the first shot I shared on that Sunday night. Hope you enjoyed the week of sunset images (and the extended afterglow) as much as I did taking them.

Afterglow – Red Sky at Night

This is the last image I took on Sunday night as the afterglow finally faded (twenty minutes after the sun had set!). The oranges had shifted to a deep red sky and I had scrambled up the steps leading back to Peabody Lane. From the higher vantage point I was able to include a nearby dock and a view of the harbor filled with boats on this late September evening. I had pointed to a site in yesterday's post to share some information on how a sunset afterglow forms. In it, they comment on some of the qualities of a [...]

A Touch of Color

I'm sure by now your Facebook and/or Instagram feeds have been filled with photos of Sunday's epic sunset. The light truly was exceptional and I raced around the beach at the end of Peabody Lane (a public way) exploring various compositions. Immediately after the sun set, the afterglow began adding a touch of color to the high clouds overhead. I received a nice comment on my original post Sunday night pointing to a great resource about sunset colors. There they show an example of a red-orange afterglow such as this and explain it is produced by a thick aerosol cloud [...]

J70 and the Start of the Sunset

I shared an image of the peak of sunset light from Peabody Lane last night and promised many more images from this outing on Sunday night. As the sun began to descend in the sky and the clouds broke just right, twin spots of golden light appeared low in the evening sky. I set up this composition and then spotted a J70 gliding through the harbor. I waited until it came into a nice spot and captured this image. If you weren't aware, the J70 World Championship begins today in the waters off Marblehead. Racing continues all week long.

Epic Light from Peabody Lane

What an incredible sunset! I had my eye on the clouds for most of the afternoon and had a gut feeling that the clouds might break just right for a solid sunset. Having not shot much in the past few weeks, the timing seemed to work out to get out and see about capturing some new scenes in Marblehead. I drove across the causeway onto Marblehead Neck and over to Peabody Lane where I set up along the rocks on the beach. I started to shoot as the sun lowered and was fairly pleased with early shots until the sun [...]

Waiting Game

From the same outing (and same location) as last week's image of the blue dinghy comes this one of a boat seeming to be playing the waiting game before being put into the water of Little Harbor. Though with how late it is in the season, the boat may have just been taken out. I've never actually seen this movable crane in action before. I'm curious what it looks like when it moves out into position...

Light Up the Moon

The full moon rose almost three weeks ago and I'm only now finding time to share this image from the night. I had captured a deep red full moon just before 8pm while there was still a bit of light in the evening sky and shared that one immediately. A few minutes later, the moon had disappeared behind a low bank of clouds and I sought a new composition. I was able to predict a spot along Front Street from which I could capture this shot of the full moon behind Marblehead Light. I couldn't be sure of it's exact [...]
