National Find a Rainbow in Marblehead Day

By |2021-04-03T08:56:16-04:00April 3rd, 2021|Categories: Uncategorized|Tags: |

I didn't know there was a National Find a Rainbow Day until I saw the Corinthian's post today (April 3rd). Figured I would look back and see just how many rainbows I have captured in Marblehead and was surprised to find more than 40 in these past 10 years. Here are 27 of my favorites (link in profile on IG).

Passing by The Landing

I had hoped to shoot the Marblehead Tech Dinghy Association again this weekend but the lack of light and coming rain cancelled my plans for that as well as the full moonrise.  Instead here is another image from last weekend's outing under far better conditions. From my vantage point at the end of Parker Lane, I was able to capture scenes of these dinghy's passing by Abbot Hall, the BYC, Crocker, St Michaels and, as here, The Landing.  From this position on the opposite end of the Neck, The Landing and Old North Church come into close proximity and the [...]

An Empty Harbor Awaits

By |2021-03-24T07:26:33-04:00March 24th, 2021|Categories: Sunrise|Tags: , , |

After getting out to shoot for the first time in weeks on Sunday, I awoke early this morning and checked the weather to see if the sunrise might be worth another outing. The cloud cover looked promising and, when Matt Noyes mentioned a nice sunrise on NECN, I knew I had to head out the door.  I drove to Hammond Park first but found the composition options limited from there. I then headed to the State Street Landing and walked to the right onto Tuckers Wharf where I found a nice angle for capturing the dawn. As the sun began [...]

Spring is in the Air and Class is in Session

What a great way to kick off spring by dusting off the camera after 7 weeks without a single photo and heading out to the newly repaired public way at Parker Lane.  The Marblehead Tech Dinghy Association is one of the bright spots of this COVID winter. With frostbite sailing sidelined due to restrictions on sailing and with these MIT one-design racers available, a new group of boats could be seen racing within Marblehead harbor. The Tech Dinghy was designed by a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1935. In November 2020, Jay Watt created the Marblehead Tech [...]

Wednesdays in Marblehead is on a brief Hiatus

By |2021-03-03T07:52:35-05:00March 3rd, 2021|Categories: Uncategorized|

For the past few years, I have taken a brief break from capturing and sharing images of Marblehead in the first few months of the year. I saw that as an opportunity to 'recharge' my creativity and, after this past year, I really, really needed that again. Sorry for not letting everyone know (I got an email or two asking why posts had stopped and felt terrible for forgetting to post something like this in February). I plan to post again sometime in March or April. In the meantime, if you haven't seen every one of the more than 2,000 [...]

Snow Falling on State Street

By |2021-02-09T21:36:18-05:00February 10th, 2021|Categories: Snow|Tags: , , |

On the same January morning in which I captured Mud Puddle, Arnould Gallery and Old Town House, I also decided to walk along Washington Street and stopped when I looked down State. The light dusting of snow (well before the more recent impressive snowfalls) had coated the roofs and sidewalks of these homes. That white coat only served to amplify the vibrant colors of the houses standing side by side along this historic street. I stepped into the street to get the angle just right and made sure to include the tree branches breaking up the otherwise monotone sky. A [...]

High Tide Mark at Castle Rock

By |2021-02-02T20:34:29-05:00February 3rd, 2021|Categories: Snow|Tags: , , , , |

On the last day of January, I drove across the causeway hoping for a nice sunset. As I drove I noticed icicles along the causeway and then a surprising amount of ice present on both sides of the Neck.  I continued onto Castle Rock and got out to find an impressive amount of ice along the rock face above the high tide mark.  I took a few photos from the grassy area and then made my way (carefully) down to the beach below. The sunset wasn't bringing the light I had hoped so I focused instead on the beach and [...]

Washington Street in the Snow

By |2021-01-27T08:33:55-05:00January 27th, 2021|Categories: Snow|Tags: , , , , , |

Overnight, a light snow fell over Marblehead and so, this morning, I headed down to Washington Street hoping to find a new composition to share in this new year. I drove by Abbot Hall and then turned to find the tree in front of Old Town House to be perfectly covered in white. I kept driving and parked in front of Haley's as soon as I spotted this view of Mud Puddle Toys, Arnould Gallery and Old Town House. I quickly crossed the street and lined up the colorful storefronts with the bright yellow backdrop of Old Town House. A [...]

Christmas in the Cupola

By |2021-01-13T07:37:40-05:00January 13th, 2021|Categories: Aerial|Tags: , , , |

It's a bit late for a Christmas post but when I received a message about a beautiful Christmas tree in the cupola of the Jeremiah Lee mansion, I knew I had to find a way to capture it before it was taken down. I arrived on Washington Street prepared with all of my lenses as well as the drone imagining the angles I might have to play with to capture the tree. I started with the drone and lucked out with some nice winter light on Abbot Hall to get the shoot off to a nice start. From there I [...]

Winter Light

By |2021-01-10T18:16:08-05:00January 10th, 2021|Categories: Aerial|Tags: , |

I normally take a break from shooting in the winter months but received a message via Instagram of a must see in downtown Marblehead so I headed over tonight with my drone and gear in the trunk. I launched the drone from right in front of Abbot Hall as the sun was setting and lucked out with great Winter light on the brick building setting it apart from the rest of downtown Marblehead and the empty harbor beyond. I got the other shot as well and will post that this week. I don't plan on posting daily images mixing new [...]
