Marblehead Light Under the Stars

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out to Chandler Hovey park on Sunday at sunset hoping to catch the tail end of a large coronal mass ejection with promises of auroras in the night sky.  I was fortunate that a nice sunset developed and, after capturing it, returned to the car to warm up (it was in the 30s but the wind was whipping across the water) and change to my wide angle lens.  I then set up this composition and waited. The tricky part with stars is that the camera is able to capture much more [...]

Summer Sunset at Chandler Hovey Park

Is it too early for a 'warm' picture?  It's been freezing lately and this morning is no exception.  As I watched the election results roll in last night, I combed through my photo archive (currently with 268 images waiting to post) and settled on this shot taken on August 2nd.  The image struck me for the warm feel coming from the colors of the sunset.  There is a whole lot more happening here though which is what drew me to this scene in the first place. First you have the brightly colored sails on the water.  There's a family gathered [...]

Lighthouse Reflections at Sunset

If yesterday's post was the 'rule breaker', this one is toeing the line when it comes to composition.  You'll note the lighthouse in the left third of the frame, the leading lines formed by the grass bringing the viewer's eye to the base of the lighthouse and then extending up in the form of the clouds over the water. So, which do you prefer - the 'rule breaker' or 'rule follower'?

Sunset after the Storm

This will serve as a make-up post after today's poor showing on the site.  With the storm that came through tonight, I had really been hoping for a chance at shooting some lightning and headed out to the Neck with that in mind.  Unfortunately there was only wind, grey skies and some drizzle there so I walked around hoping the sun might shine through at sunset.  Not 10 minutes later, I saw the first hint of pink.  And then some more and then a bit more until this scene unfolded.  I had to crank up the ISO on the camera [...]

Fishing in the Storm

We had a short break from the rain on Sunday and so I took my son out to Fort Sewall for some exploration.  The sea was choppy and large waves crashed on the rocks as we were there at high tide.  When we reached the edge of the hill, we noticed this lone fisherman on the rocks.  His perch was precarious and the waves crashed all around him.  It looked like a rogue wave could have toppled him at any moment but he remained there casting his line into the water.  After a good 20 minutes of watching him, they [...]

The Rocks of Chandler Hovey Park

Another beautiful Winter sunset took place as I set up at Chandler Hovey park.  Rather than shoot the lighthouse, I turned my attention to the rocks that make up the coastline.  You can make out Childrens Island in the distance and watch as the approaching wave gets ready to crash onto the rocks below.

Under the Stars

A new moon offers the best opportunity for star shots and one happened to fall on Christmas Eve in 2011.  It was unseasonably warm (or at least not bitterly cold) and, after building a toy baby crib and grabbing some very last minute stocking stuffers, I headed over to Chandler Hovey Park.  It's hard to appreciate just how dark it was when I set up to capture this image.  I could just make out shapes and had to hope the focus was accurate.  Each image took 30 seconds to capture and I had a few failed attempts before getting this [...]

Sea Smoke Envelopes Marblehead Light

I had never captured (let alone seen) sea smoke before this morning. When I saw the temp was supposed to be near zero on Sunday with negative wind chills in the morning, I decided to try my hand at capturing this phenomenon. I woke at 6, dressed in a million layers and grabbed some coffee on the way to the harbor. There I found my vantage point at Lovis Cove and setup. I started shooting before the sun came up and liked what I was getting. There was a thick low lying cloud cover and the sun took a while [...]

The Lighthouse Under the Stars

With the unseasonably warm weather, I decided to pursue a new photographic avenue - shooting the stars.  The most important aspects of shooting a sky filled with stars is to try to minimize light pollution and to shoot at least a few hours after sunset and before sunrise.  It was with those thoughts in mind that I decided to head to Chandler Hovey Park at midnight on Christmas Eve. I set up near one of the benches (using it as cover from the stray lights at the park) and lined the lighthouse at the base of the photo with the [...]

The Lighthouse Decked out in Lights

This weekend, the Rotarians ventured up the steps of the lighthouse and decorated it with Christmas lights.  I decided to head up to Chandler Hovey park at sunset on Sunday and photograph the lights as the sun set.  I was hoping for a cloudless night with subtle colors and was not disappointed.  I was also hoping for a still and not too cold evening - I got the first but it was really, really cold out there tonight.  The lights will stay up for the next two weeks or so - make sure you make it out to enjoy this [...]
