A New Day Dawns Over Gerry Island

It still amazes me that Gerry island can appear so isolated at high tide and yet twice a day, as if by magic, a road appears linking us with this small island in Little Harbor.  This image was taken on April 3rd after a sunrise shoot that took place at Hammond Park.  The sun seemed to take forever to rise and I took advantage by driving over to Doaks Lane after finishing my shooting at the park. For this image, I decided to include a good deal of water in the foreground to highlight the isolation of the island but [...]

Purple Dawn Over an Empty Harbor

Last week, I shared images of turquoise waters all taken on the prior Wednesday in Marblehead.  I thought I would start this week in a similar way with this image taken last Wednesday at dawn. I had woken at 5:30am on this particular morning and promptly looked out the window and at the weather radar to try to discern if there were any clouds near the horizon.  I couldn't tell and decided to bundle up (it was in the 20's on this early April morning) and head out in hopes of decent clouds and light.  Without much to go on [...]

Dawn Lights Up Tinkers Island

I shared the story of how I came to photograph this view from a home on Ocean Avenue previously but have a few favorites from this dawn photoshoot so thought I would share another today.  Click here to read the backstory - LINK Whenever I shoot a scene, I always evaluate a number of different compositions.  The previous image was a 'straight' shot which was all I had time for as the light quickly started to fade.  After grabbing that image, I slowed down and explored other possiblities.  In this one, I decided to use the curve of the beach [...]

Dawn’s Light and Tinkers Island from a House on Ocean Avenue

On Monday, I shared an image from Castle Rock with the sun's rays shining on ice as a result of the arctic weather.  I promised a backstory for that shot so here goes... A few weeks ago, I received a request to purchase a matted print of my Walk in the Fog image (you can see it in the Best of 2011 gallery by using the menu above).  At the time, I was also asked about being commissioned for a special photo shoot.  When I delivered the print at the house on Ocean Avenue, I surreptitiously scouted the location knowing that I [...]

Cold Dawn over Marblehead Neck

Yesterday, January 23rd, was slated to be our first near-zero degree day in a while.  With the recent moderate weather and ocean temps in the 40's, I figured I had a good shot at capturing some sea smoke.  With that in mind, I woke up early on Wednesday and drove to a few spots.  Unfortunately, Redd's Pond and Little Harbor didn't have anything in the way of smoke.  I crossed my fingers and made my way to Front Street hoping for better luck.  For whatever reason, the water was smooth and smoke-free.  I sat there in the car trying to [...]

A Shining Star Over State Street

On the morning of December 30th, I headed out in hopes of capturing the streets of Old Town draped in a light dusting of freshly fallen snow.  As the sun had yet to rise, I decided to head to Front Street first and capture the sunrise.  Along the way, I drove down State Street.  When I saw the wreaths on the lit street lamps and the shining star in the distance, I knew I had to stop and capture this scene first.  The only spot that worked for the composition I had in mind was the middle of the street [...]

From the Rooftops – Through the Window of St Michaels Church

As I mentioned in yesterday's sunrise post, I spent the New Year of 2013 the same way I had started 2012 - climbing up to the top of the steeple of a church in Marblehead.  This time it was St Michaels and Steve Clay accompanied me.  We made it to the steeple only to find two barriers in the way - chicken wire and thick wooden louvres on each window.  I had noticed one window on the level below so we headed back down to see if there were any photos to be had there.  As I peered to the [...]

From the Rooftops – The Cupola of Old North Church

It has been almost exactly one year since I made the trek up to the top of the Old North Church with Rhod Sharp.  It was New Years Day of 2012 when we climbed up to the cupola...only to find the interior fogged.  While Rhod managed to find a way out at the balcony below, I shot two images of the interior under dawn's light.  I shared the first a while back but decided to bring this image out as the New Year approaches. This will be my last image shared in 2012.  Come back to the page for my [...]

Dawn Lights Up Fort Sewall

Two weeks ago, I ventured out at dawn in hopes of a nice sunrise from Front Street and Fort Sewall.  I made my way down there at 5:30 in the morning and ventured out of the car (and into the cold) once the first light appeared at the horizon.  I started off with this image of the houses that abut the Fort and the great tree that marks this part of town.  There were just enough clouds at the horizon to capture the colors of dawn which also reflected off the windows of the house.  The long exposure required due [...]

Pink Clouds at Dawn Over Marblehead Harbor

Something told me that Tuesday morning's sunrise might be worth an early wake up so I dutifully set the alarm a bit early and made my way out to Front street at 5:30 in the morning.  At first, the skies disappointed with some decent morning light but no clouds to reflect the pinks that typically accompany a late Fall sunrise.  Just as the sun threatened to break above the clouds, these wisps showed up and quickly fell into place. I was shooting in landscape (horizontal) format and quickly switched to this portrait (vertical) orientation to get the tops of the [...]
