Dawn over Little Harbor and Marblehead Light

On Saturday morning, I decided to wake up early in hopes that the predicted 35 degree temps would lead to some nice mist/fog coming off the ponds.  I drove by Redds and Black Joes but neither was 'misting' nor were there good colors to speak of.  Instead, I decided to park on Beacon Street and get some nice colors of the dawn reflecting off the water in Little Harbor.  There were a few boats in the near harbor that I took pictures of but preferred the longer view looking out towards the lighthouse.  The break in the choppy water served [...]

Dawn Breaks over Brown’s Island

After catching the sunrise from Grace Oliver beach, I walked down Beacon Street to see what the colors were doing behind Brown's Island.  With a few minutes to spare before the sun rose above the treetops, I quickly composed this image to put the island into silhouette and highlight the great light reflecting off the clouds overhead. All told, I spent one hour between Little Harbor and Grace Oliver beach shooting the dawn and sunrise.  In that time, I kept walking (or running) back and forth to 'chase the light' and try to make the most of each location's landmarks. [...]

Intentional Camera Movement – The Ocean

On the same morning in which I chased an amazing dawn and came away with photos of a lone clammer, I decided to try my hand at a new (for me) technique - intentional camera movement.  To do this, I adjusted the settings to get a slightly slow shutter speed and swept the camera across the ocean while 'dragging the shutter'.  The result was a bunch of strange looking images and one really neat one.  The ocean was very calm on this morning and with this attempt, I managed to capture the ripples in the water while instilling motion in [...]

Clammer in the Water

A late entry this morning and one that complements the image from Monday.  After racing to shoot the great colors of dawn and finding someone digging for clams, I kept walking and looking for strong compositions with this guy in the water.  When I got behind him and saw this view of a lone person in the vastness of the ocean, I knew I had found what I wanted.  The boat in the distance seems to balance the scene perfectly.

Clamming at Dawn

I had to get up early on Friday morning for an electronic medical record meeting at a local hospital.  As I got dressed and ready for the day, I looked at the window and saw an incredible display of pinks and purples lighting up the sky.  I decided to postpone breakfast and raced downstairs, grabbed the always ready camera bag and drove.  I wasn't sure where I was going but found myself on Atlantic Avenue headed toward Ocean Ave.  The light was starting to fade as I pulled up to Devereux beach and jumped out of the car. There was [...]

Dawn in Marblehead

I woke up this morning at 6am for no good reason and checked the weather to see if I might have interesting light or other conditions.  There was the possibility of fog so I headed down to Devereux but saw that any fog that might have been had since lifted.  I drove through town and ended up at the Landing where I noticed the great red light of dawn.  I had maybe 4 minutes to get set up and grab this shot before the red was washed away by the rising sun. It's been a while since I've been able [...]

Dawn Breaks over Castle Rock

Have I mentioned how much I love the light that comes with Winter?  In late December, I woke up early with the goal of revisiting Castle Rock for a dawn photoshoot.  I had last done this in the Summer of 2010 and felt it was long overdue.  The tide was just about perfect and I set up with my tripod on the loose rocks that double as a beach. The hardest part about this was trying to balance the longish shutter speed to give some movement to the waves while maintaining a good depth of field.  This is the first [...]

From the Rooftops – Washington Street and the Lighthouse

As many of you know, I was fortunate to start the new year perched near the top of the Old North Church shooting the first sun rise of the year.  As excited as I was to capture a sunrise from this vantage point, I was even more excited for a fresh crop of 'from the rooftops' images.  I consider this one of the trifecta of ultimate rooftops on my list (the others being Marblehead Lighthouse and the very top of Abbot Tower). After capturing the sun rising above the neck, I turned my attention to the beauty of Washington street [...]

Let There Be Light

Following a few minutes after yesterday's view of a purple dawn, the sky turned a deep red that was reflected by the boats in the harbor.  The clouds formed an incredible shape that looked a bit like the eye of a hurricane as they slowly drifted by.  I was fortunate that the wind was minimal as it allowed for a longer exposure that served to accentuate the saturation of the entire scene. This the second of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way to lead up to my entry in the [...]

Dawn of a New Day

I really wanted to shoot a sunrise but just could not fathom the 4am wakeup that would be required.  That is until I woke last Wednesday at exactly 4am without an alarm clock and figured it must be a sign.  I had plotted out the sunrise 'just in case' and realized Hammond Park would offer the best vantage point.  I set up and watched as the dawn broke spreading a purple glow over the harbor filled with boats. This will be the first of five posts this week documenting an incredible sunrise over Marblehead harbor.  This seemed a perfect way [...]
