Turning the Corner at Brown’s Island

Last week, a good friend took me out on his boat.  We started off at Salem Harbor and explored the outer shores of Marblehead and the Neck.  By 7pm, we were approaching Brown's Island via Doliber Cove.  As we headed in, Brown's Island rotated and the sky opened up and I was given this perfect scene of golden light with Marblehead Lighthouse seen in the distance. I mentioned previously that I took a LOT of shots on this two hour trip.  Much of that was due to the conditions with light changing rapidly and the need to keep adjusting to [...]

North Goosebury Island Under the Clouds

On Tuesday night, a good friend invited me out for a boat ride at 6pm.  My wife and kids were still in Virginia (I had been down there revisiting DC the prior week) and so I jumped at the opportunity.  A quick stop at Mino's for dinner and a cooler of refreshments accompanied us as we headed down to Salem harbor.  Once on board, the sun cleared a cloud bank and we were treated to some incredible light.  Seth took me around Naugus head and Peaches Point and then around Marblehead Neck before heading out towards Baker's Island. As we [...]

Sunset from Fort Sewall Overlooking Marblehead Harbor

On the same evening that I captured an image over Gerry Island [LINK} and then the new composition of a tree at Fort Sewall [LINK], I was also treated to a remarkable sunset.  I hadn't thought that the light or clouds would develop into much of a show on this outing but, as I walked back along the path toward the great tree at Fort Sewall, I noticed these great undulating clouds forming over Marblehead harbor.  Knowing there was an unobstructed view to be had with a little creative fence jumping, I clambered down to a ledge and set up [...]

Looking out over Gerry Island from Fort Sewall

On the same day that I captured a new (to me) composition of the road under a tree at Fort Sewall which I shared yesterday, I also snagged this image of Gerry Island at sunset.  While the light was not as spectacular as I might have hoped (though it ended up making up for it later...), the golden glow was reflected off the water below and lit up the nearby grass to great effect.  I needed to put in quite a bit of work to tease out all the great light and potential in this image and decided to show [...]

Morning in Little Harbor

Here is another image from my sunrise shoot on June 12th.  After shooting the sunrise from Hammond Park and then up and down the Landing and causeway, I drove up towards little harbor.  I ended up in front of Marblehead Lobster Company and found these boats parked in the waters of little harbor.  With Gerry island in the immediate background and the lighthouse jutting out in the distance, the composition seemed to work really nicely.  Hope you enjoy this serene image of morning in little harbor.

Full Double Rainbow over Marblehead

On Monday night, I shared the story and first image from my wild race to capture the incredible double rainbow that took shape at sunset over Marblehead.  [LINK] As I mentioned, I had driven to Bass Rock Lane as it was the closest spot to the house offering unobstructed views of the water.  Shortly after capturing the image of a double rainbow that I shared immediately after coming home, I turned the camera to the portrait/vertical orientation and fired off 6 shots in the hopes of capturing the full double rainbow. While the earlier shot required little in the way [...]

The Strawberry Supermoon Rises Over Tinker’s Island

This weekend's Strawberry Moon (aka Rose Moon, Flower Moon) was also designated as the Supermoon marking the closest that the moon would come to Earth in all of 2013.  This particular supermoon would appear to be the largest full moon of the year owing to its proximity to Earth.  With that in mind, I scouted out the moonrise and moonset beginning on Saturday night.  As luck would have it, other plans and weather removed the Saturday night and Sunday morning opportunities to shoot the supermoon.  I was determined to head out on Sunday however and was armed with a borrowed [...]

Full Rainbow over Ram’s Island

I was just finishing the last page in the Percy Jackson book I had been reading to my son when I hear my wife scream.  She opened the door and told me to grab my camera and get out as fast as possible.  As soon as I stepped outside I saw the most vibrant rainbow I had ever seen.  I knew I had minutes to shoot it and drove out as fast as I could to the nearest spot with a good vantage point - Spray Avenue.  I parked, swapped out to put my widest lens on and ran down [...]

Tinkers Island Under Storm Clouds

On May 24th, the grey clouds that had covered us for days finally parted and, as they left, a storm churned off the coast.  I went out after work while the light was strong and stopped at a number of spots to capture the not too distant storm. This image came from a stop at a home along Ocean Avenue.  I've photographed from this spot before and am always amazed at how much the same scene can vary based on weather conditions.  This time, I decided to focus on Tinkers Island in the distance as the light was best at [...]

A New Day Dawns Over Gerry Island

It still amazes me that Gerry island can appear so isolated at high tide and yet twice a day, as if by magic, a road appears linking us with this small island in Little Harbor.  This image was taken on April 3rd after a sunrise shoot that took place at Hammond Park.  The sun seemed to take forever to rise and I took advantage by driving over to Doaks Lane after finishing my shooting at the park. For this image, I decided to include a good deal of water in the foreground to highlight the isolation of the island but [...]
