Tendrils on the Neck and Tinker’s Island in Storm Light

On Friday, the grey skies that had dominated for days on end finally threatened to break.  As I drove home after work, I noted some dramatic skies with amazing cloud formations taking shape and decided to head out as soon as I could.  I stopped home long enough to grab my camera and tripod and then made my way out to Marblehead Neck.  I stopped at a number of spots along the way and will share those in the days to come.  One of my final destinations was Castle Rock where I took this view after the more classic one [...]

Sunset over Rams and Tinkers Island

While this image was not taken during the same outing as the four others shared this week, it was also taken on that same Wednesday in Marblehead.  I had returned home and started working on the images you've seen already when the sky started to turn again and I began to wonder if we might be treated to a great sunset.  I had trouble deciding where to go but found myself at Preston beach just as the sun dipped below the clouds.  When it did, it lit up Rams and Tinker's Islands in a great reddish glow. The tricky part [...]

Tinkers Island and the Deep Blue Sea

Continuing this week's theme of sharing images from a single outing on a recent Wednesday in Marblehead, here is the second stop.  After shooting a short and long exposure image along Ocean Avenue, I decided to check out the view from this spot a bit further up.  Some of you may recognize this composition from a series I shared taken at dawn over the Winter.  I had actually just delivered a print from that set to the couple who live here and they reiterated that I had an open invitation to stop by in the future for more shoots. It [...]

Day 4 – Curling Waves at Devereux Beach

Saturday seemed like a normal day - wake up, play some squash, get some breakfast...the usual.  As I finished a game, I received a text from a friend with an image of crashing waves at Preston Beach.  This was high tide but I figured the storm would have left and the seas would be calm at this point.  Guess I was wrong.  I quickly headed home and grabbed my camera for another outing. I started off at Bass Rock Lane and then headed to Preston Beach where I got a cool shot with the anchor (image is 'in the queue'). [...]

Dawn Lights Up Tinkers Island

I shared the story of how I came to photograph this view from a home on Ocean Avenue previously but have a few favorites from this dawn photoshoot so thought I would share another today.  Click here to read the backstory - LINK Whenever I shoot a scene, I always evaluate a number of different compositions.  The previous image was a 'straight' shot which was all I had time for as the light quickly started to fade.  After grabbing that image, I slowed down and explored other possiblities.  In this one, I decided to use the curve of the beach [...]

Dawn’s Light and Tinkers Island from a House on Ocean Avenue

On Monday, I shared an image from Castle Rock with the sun's rays shining on ice as a result of the arctic weather.  I promised a backstory for that shot so here goes... A few weeks ago, I received a request to purchase a matted print of my Walk in the Fog image (you can see it in the Best of 2011 gallery by using the menu above).  At the time, I was also asked about being commissioned for a special photo shoot.  When I delivered the print at the house on Ocean Avenue, I surreptitiously scouted the location knowing that I [...]

Ram Island Surrounded by Sea Smoke

On Wednesday morning, I woke up early and hoped to capture some sea smoke.  Unfortunately, it wasn't quite cold enough and I had to settle for a pretty awesome sunrise.  On Thursday, I figured there was no hope of shooting anything.  I had to drop off my son at school at 7:55 and head to work in Danvers afterwards.  When my wife texted me from the JCC to tell me there was sea smoke on the water, however, plans changed.  I still dropped off my son but then ran to the car and drove out to Bass Rock Lane.  I [...]

The Little Boys and Girls’ Rooms

Experimental Friday heads out to Childrens Island and this image from October of last year.  I think the colors first drew me to this scene and the rotting wood at the base of the doors as well as the hand painted BOYS and GIRLS signs led me to take the picture.  But what really kept me looking was the small handprint seen on the window on the girls' side.  It just leaves you wondering...

Curves in the Water Lead to Brown’s Island

It's Tuesday and that can only mean another Long Exposure image to share with you today (well, that and a pretty important election...).  Today's image comes from the day before Superstorm Sandy arrived.  I had scouted out this small discharge pipe a while ago but realized I needed an astronomical high tide to realize the image I had visualized.  For good or bad, Sandy delivered on that wish. As the tide peaked on October 28th, I made my way out to this area and found the water covering the length of the concrete covered pipe.  More incredible than the water [...]

Long Exposure – Clouds Fly Over Browns Island

I remember when I took this photo in February that it had been prompted in large part by someone at the Reporter asking if I had any shots of Brown's (or Crowninshield) Island.  I had to confess I didn't have any that featured the whole island and so I made it a point to head down to Harding Lane and find a good vantage point. I had chosen a day with good clouds and a nice wind and decided to shoot this as a long exposure.  The fading light made exposures quite difficult and I managed a single good image [...]
