At Gas House Beach – July 4, 2018 – 2:30pm

On Wednesday, July 4th, I decided the conditions were perfect to try a new series of aerial photographs of Marblehead beaches filled with sunbathers trying to escape the hot and humid weather. The July 4th weekend with its perfect combination of hot weather, clear skies, calm water and well timed high tide created the perfect opportunity. In this image at Gas House Beach, I positioned the drone over the water of Little Harbor and watched the participants in the water to time this capture. I think it perfectly represents a hot summer day in Marblehead and the lure of the beach. [...]

At Devereux Beach – July 4, 2018 – 2:00pm

On Wednesday, July 4th, I decided the conditions were perfect to try a new series of aerial photographs of Marblehead beaches filled with sunbathers trying to escape the hot and humid weather. A few weeks earlier, my sister had noted that a video I shot over Preston Beach reminded her of the aerial work of another photographer she had followed. I checked out his images and saw the familiar split view of ocean and sand and decided to create a small series of aerial images of our many beaches.  The July 4th weekend with its perfect combination of hot weather, [...]

At Preston Beach – July 4, 2018 – 1:45pm

On Wednesday, July 4th, I decided the conditions were perfect to try a new series of aerial photographs of Marblehead beaches filled with sunbathers trying to escape the hot and humid weather. The July 4th weekend with its perfect combination of hot weather, clear skies, calm water and well timed high tide created the perfect opportunity. In this image at Preston Beach, I positioned the drone just off shore and watched the waves and participants in the water to time this capture. I think it perfectly represents a hot summer day in Marblehead and the lure of the beach. Full series [...]

Lake Havasu, Marblehead

This weekend was a scorcher and just about the only place to get any relief from the heat was on the water. With that in mind, I decided to fly my drone over a few spots in town including Brown's Island. In year's past, I had noted how the harbor would fill with boats at high tide (many tied together) and quickly came to resemble a (milder) version of Lake Havasu. With the drone flying high above, I was able to capture the scene of various boats anchored or tied together off Brown's Island with some sunbathers on the small [...]

Paddle before Moonrise

Last week, I had gone out to Fountain Park to capture the full moon rising over Fort Sewall and the homes along Little Harbor. As I waited for the sun to set, I noted a soft glow on the houses facing the harbor and then saw a small motor boat and a kayak enter the frame. I captured this shot just as both were crossing over the light reflecting in the still waters. It's funny how different this image appears from the moonrise of last week with a nearly identical composition but with a change in light and focus for [...]

Baseball in the Fog

For those who don't know me outside of this website, I'm the father of two children and purchased my first 'real' camera six months before my now 12 year old son was born. That led to landscape photography and eventually Wednesdays in Marblehead. For every landscape shot I share, I probably take 5-10 of the kids doing activities or just trying to capture moments before they grow up. Only once before have my kid shots and the landscape ones come together in a group shot of kids at Redd's during the Fourth of July sailboat regatta. Last night, I was [...]

Lantern Walk at Old Town House

In early February, I was finally able to join the Glover's Regiment for their annual lantern walk to celebrate the life of their benefactor.  I shared a video of several images narrated by the captain Seamus Daly but held onto this vertical image to share on a later date. I had arrived at Old Town House as Glover's Regiment gathered and received instructions for the lantern walk. As I shot images of them gathered in front of the familiar yellow building, I spotted a hooded woman coming near. I quickly switched to a vertical orientation and captured this shot as [...]

Flying over Tinkers Island

In late January, I noted some kite surfers at Devereux Beach as I drove across the causeway and made a beeline for home to grab my gear in order to capture images of them jumping waves and catching air. With my new camera, I also captured some video and ended up sharing that before any stills. As it happened, storm after storm followed and I am only now sharing the first image of this surfer flying over Tinkers Island.

Pond Skating on New Years Day

I have had this image of pond skating at Redd's in mind for years and was so thrilled to have finally captured it. In 2010, Vincent Laforet captured an aerial image of skaters at Rockefeller center from a helicopter and what struck me about the shot was the shadows telling the story of what each skater was doing. I considered hiring my own helicopter or plane for a similar image over Redds Pond but that held too many complications and variables.  A few years ago, drones came on the market but the early ones had cameras better suited for video [...]

Last Call in Little Harbor

As I wait for leaves to change around town, I thought I would look back in the 'to be posted' folder to see if I had any nice foliage shots to share.  I happened upon this image of boats tied up in Little Harbor on September 28, 2014.  With the leaves starting to change color on Brown's Island and the light turning golden, a few boats seemed to have broken from their tie ups to call it a night.  Given the festivities that accompany these tie ups, I thought it only appropriate to title this one 'Last Call in Little [...]
