Concerts at Crocker Park – A Festival of Arts Tradition

It's hard to believe that the Fourth of July is nearly upon us and with it the Marblehead Festival of Arts.  As part of this incredible tradition, music is offered daily in concerts at Crocker Park.  The full schedule can be found here: Concerts at Crocker Park  Today's image was captured on the night of July 2nd, 2015 during one of the concerts and a beautiful Summer sunset.  The view of Crocker Park packed with people should help convince anyone that Marblehead is the best place to enjoy the Fourth of July.

Best of Show – Marblehead Festival of Arts

I am thrilled and humbled to announce that one of my entries 'In a Fog on State Street' has been awarded Best of Show at the 2017 Marblehead Festival of Arts.  Both this image and 'Light Dawns on Marblehead' will be on display at Old Town House beginning on Friday, June 30th after the awards ceremony at Abbot Hall.  The photography display ends on Tuesday, July 4th. This year's entry was the third in a series of black and white fog landscapes in Marblehead that began with 'A Walk in the Fog' which won Best of Show at the 2012 [...]

Between the Moon and Marblehead Light

A full moon is rising tonight on the first night of Passover and, knowing that I won't have a chance to shoot it, I thought I would share this image of the moonrise from mid-November.  I've shared two other images of this full moon before but today's image was the first one I captured that night and, while the moon hadn't quite hit its peak glow, I really liked the softer look of it as it broke through the haze on this night. One of my favorite aspects of shooting the moon from this spot near Crocker Park was being able [...]

Capturing the Moment

The night of July 5th, 2016 produced the most beautiful light I have ever encountered in my 9 years in Marblehead and resulted in (now) 13 images shared from this one evening.  It really was a joy to watch the fog develop as the day approached its end and then be awed by the foggy sunset that followed. As much as I strive to capture perfect moments of the town of Marblehead and share its beauty with current and former residents, I have very few images of myself actually capturing these moments.  And so when I spotted a woman pull [...]

Top 10 of 2016 – #2 – Sailing Under the Sunset

This is the second image in the Top 10 of 2016 countdown to have been taken on the night of July 5th and was an easy choice for the #2 spot (it was actually #1 until December 14th when it got bounced for that top slot).  As the sun set through the building fog on this night, it created an incredible diffuse orange light.  I was shooting various compositions in this light and then spotted two townies sailing under the sunset light.  The picture perfect light and warmth of the final scene with the silhouettes of the sailors visible combined [...]

Watching the Waves Roll In

By the time all was said and done on Labor Day, I had visited Devereux Beach three separate times and captured wildly different images with each visit.  On this occasion, I had stopped in near high tide before heading to Castle Rock and found that most of the surfers had departed.  Instead of shooting people in the water, I tried to find interesting compositions of people watching the waves roll in to shore. As I ducked under the causeway to shoot waves crashing against the rocks, I looked up and saw feet dangling overhead.  I quickly recomposed this shot to [...]

Motoring through Marblehead Harbor

The pier at the Pleon Yacht Club is one of my favorite spots for capturing a Marblehead sunset as it offers a clear view towards both Abbot Hall and our lighthouse with various compositions of boats to be found in between.  On Saturday night, I headed to this spot a little before sunset as the clouds built up at the end of the day and held the promise of some nice light. I shot from the float on the water until the sun dipped below the horizon and then made my way back up the ramp for a few final [...]

Diving at Dusk

On Wednesday night, I had headed out to Crocker Park as sunset neared hoping for some good light to shine behind Abbot Hall.  While the light built up to a peak looking back toward town, I kept looking over my shoulder at the developing golden glow on Marblehead Harbor.  As the sunset cannons fired, I raced to the spot from which I could capture the boats reflecting the beautiful glow of sunset with a hint of pink-purple in the night sky. As soon as I reached my spot for this composition, I spotted a dad and his kids taking turns jumping [...]
