Paddling past Boston

I captured this image of a stand up paddleboarder almost exactly four years ago.  I had gone out on what would turn out to be a lackluster Summer evening and almost gave up on any shots when I spotted someone taking off from Devereux Beach. With smooth strokes, the lone SUP made his way through the calm water of the Atlantic Ocean.  I thought the lone figure in the middle of the ocean brought a sense of scale to the shot and especially when seen paddling past Boston seen in the background.

Fishing off the Causeway

I think Summer officially peaked for me on Sunday, August 7th with this walk atop the causeway surrounded by scene after scene exemplifying the beauty of a Marblehead Summer.  Before capturing the closer view of a packed Devereux Beach, I happened upon a man standing more than waist deep in the Atlantic Ocean and fishing off the causeway. I watched him for a little while as I composed this image and waited for cars to pass by.  I didn't see him catch anything but he seemed quite content as the waves pushed and pulled at him.  I loved the proximity [...]

Life’s a Beach in Marblehead

After capturing the reflections at Redd's Pond, I made my way toward Devereux Beach and the causeway hoping to find more interesting compositions on this hot Summer Sunday.  I parked on the Riverhead Beach side and shot a few frames looking out toward Marblehead Light and then scaled the causeway to walk along its concrete path and take in views from both sides.  I shot toward Abbot Hall until I reached the halfway mark and then turned around to explore views of the Atlantic Ocean and Devereux Beach. As I neared the beach, I took note of the packed appearance [...]

Top 10 of 2015 – Watching the Moon Rise

When the blue moon rose over Marblehead in late July 2015, I was more than ready with a borrowed super telephoto lens.  By shooting this scene at 400mm, I was able to capture an incredibly large moon as well as the people watching the moon rise from Chandler Hovey Park.  The juxtaposition of the beautiful moon, iron works of Marblehead Light and people in various positions made for an instant favorite image. The first of two moon images in the top 10 list reaches #8 in the Top 10 of 2015 Countdown.

Watching the Moon Rise

I've already shared one image of the blue moon rising on July 31st but this one might be my favorite from that night.  I explained previously that my camera and all lenses were at Canon for their biyearly checkup and cleaning.  In their place, I was fortunate to borrow a camera and zoom lens from a friend.  The zoom she lent me allowed twice the magnification of my longest lens and the camera added an extra 1.6 time reach to do its smaller sensor.  The end result was an effective 640mm of zoom (vs the 200mm I usually use). When [...]

Jumping for Rainbows

On Monday, July 27, a storm cloud passed over Marblehead a little after 6pm.  Given the timing of the rain and the direction it was headed, I figured there was a pretty good chance for capturing a rainbow over Marblehead Harbor.  I quickly decided on Crocker Park as my destination and packed up the car. Once I reached Crocker Park, I headed across to the railing overlooking the harbor and saw the rainbow illuminated directly over Marblehead Neck.  I also spotted a few kids down at the float and headed down the walkway with this image in mind.  The tide [...]

Once in a Blue Moon

On July 23rd, I decided to go on hiatus.  This was largely driven by my feeling that I was going out to shoot the same scenes driven in part by the positive response I was getting on social media.  I felt that I was no longer shooting for myself and started feeling less excited about going out and less satisfied with the images I was capturing. In the past week, I have continued to go out to shoot but found the excitement has come roaring back (to the detriment of my family whom I forced to join me on one [...]

Harbor Illumination on the Fourth of July

This year's Fourth of July celebration was a whirlwind event during which I participated in my first Artisans Marketplace and learned that I had won Peoples Choice Award in the Festival of Arts Photography exhibit.  With both those events having just taken place, I rode my bicycle onto Marblehead Neck in the hopes of capturing images of the annual harbor illumination as well as the Marblehead fireworks display.  I've shared a few images from this night already but finally had the chance to review other images captured that evening and found a few more I would like to share with [...]

Fishing in the Storm

This is an image that I have wanted to share on countless occasions but always managed to find some other image to take its place.  In November 2009, I was exploring Fort Sewall when I spotted this small boat in the mouth of Marblehead Harbor.  The seas were rough and some good sized waves were coming to shore along Fort Beach. The juxtaposition of someone fishing in the storm while standing on a small boat with waves crashing around Chandler Hovey Park was quite impressive.  It was made more so by the relative size of the boat and Marblehead Light.
