Golden Reflections

Back once more to the evening of May 12 and the clouds over the Atlantic Ocean as seen from Devereux Beach.  The impressive cloud formation that I shared earlier in the week gradually coalesced and became more compacted near the horizon.  As the sun set, it threw its light towards the clouds which served to project golden reflections that easily shone on the still ocean water.

Filling in the Harbor

On Friday, May 22nd, I chased the clouds over to Crocker Park at sunset hoping to capture one of those early Summer sunsets that had begun to develop over Marblehead.  The best conditions were opposite the setting sun and I needed a break in the clouds behind me to allow sunlight to wash Marblehead Neck in a golden glow.  I got just that at 7:41pm and captured this image showing Marblehead harbor filling up with boats and some nicely textured clouds showing the first of many Summer sunsets.

Beauty in the Clouds

On May 12, I headed down to Devereux Beach having chased these clouds from my house.  Though I usually use clouds to help highlight another element in the scene, for this image I wanted to focus on the beauty in the clouds.  The intricate structures within the expansiveness of these clouds made for a great subject and I used the still Atlantic ocean as a reflector of the bright colors.

Lobstering under the Rising Sun

In early May I headed out at dawn in large part to capture the tree in bloom along Washington Street.  As I left the house, I spotted the sun beginning to rise and a brilliant red glow reflecting off the clouds.  I quickly decided on a stop at Hammond Park.  I grabbed the camera (no time for a tripod) and adjust settings as the sun began to disappear into the clouds.  As luck would have it, I caught the September Song heading out of Marblehead harbor on a lobstering expedition under the rising sun.

Clouds over the Causeway

I mentioned in Monday's post that I had gone out last Tuesday and found great cloud structures from this vantage point along the causeway connecting Marblehead and the Neck.  My widest lens couldn't do justice to the beautiful clouds that stretched across the horizon so I turned the camera to a vertical orientation and shot 18 frames to form a panorama. The resulting image is over 87 megapixels and, if printed at full resolution, would measure over 7 feet wide (it could easily print at twice that size without losing any detail).  Hope you enjoy this view of clouds over the [...]

The Marblehead Museum

Today's image takes us back to last week and the repeated attempts to capture this flowering tree along Washington Street with Abbot Hall in the background.  I had finally hit upon peak blooms and great light on this third visit to the location across the street (in the garden of the Jeremiah Lee Mansion).  After capturing the vertical composition, I walked up Washington Street to see if there was solid horizontal view to be had.  I was quite pleased to find that I could fit in the Marblehead Museum and Abbot Hall in the frame with the flowering tree and [...]

Rainbows and Storm Clouds

On Tuesday, May 12th, I decided to play hooky from a meeting that promised to be both boring and less than useful by heading to Devereux Beach.  There wasn't anything interesting predicted for sunset but, when I arrived at Devereux, I found impressive clouds with great structure extending up from the horizon.  As I waited for the clouds to build and for the sun to drop lower in the sky, I set up for a panorama along the causeway that would end up as a more than 87 megapixel image when all was said and done (I'll share that later in the [...]

Marblehead Art Walk this Weekend

This weekend, the annual Marblehead Art Walk will be taking place and I have been paired up with West Marine where I will be in attendance on Saturday, May 16 from 9-11 am and 4-5 pm.  I will have a variety of prints on display to showcase the matted, framed, canvas, metal and other print options available.  If all goes well, I should have a slideshow of image playing as well. With graduation coming up, this would be a perfect time to pick up the Wednesdays in Marblehead book for the new graduate.  I'll be signing copies at West Marine [...]

Spring Blossoms under St. Michael’s steeple

St. Michael's new steeple has been in place for less than a year and yet it looks right at home when looked at up close and as part of the skyline. I was out running errands on Wednesday morning and walked along Washington Street and by St. Michael's church when I looked to my right and noted a tree in full bloom.  I walked closer to check angles and compositions and was pretty sure this would 'work'.  After picking up some framed prints that had been at the Chamber of Commerce (and will be up at West Marine on Saturday [...]
