Light at the End of the Rainbow

Last night, storms were predicted to pass near Marblehead between 7 and 8pm.  Knowing that storms make for incredible light at sunset, I decided to head out after dinner and see if that might be the case on this occasion.  The clouds seemed to be coming from the direction of Boston and I therefore chose Chandler Hovey Park as my destination. I wasn't thrilled with the light when I first arrived at Chandler Hovey and stared up at Marblehead Light.  There was little definition in the clouds and they seemed too thick to allow any sun to shine through.  After [...]

The Old Oil House

Continuing the journey into the archives, this image comes from May 2011 and a foggy morning on Chandler Hovey Park.  By this time, I had photographed Marblehead Light on many occasions and this old oil house at least once before in the snow.  The added element of fog helped push Marblehead Light into the distant background and added a sense of mystery to this small brick building situated on the edge of Marblehead Neck.

First Sunset in Marblehead

I decided to go back to the depths of the archive this week and share some of my oldest images that have yet to see the light of day.  This image was taken within days of our moving to Marblehead in May 2008 and is the very first sunset in Marblehead that I captured. Little did I know that in 7 short years, this small project would turn into a website, prints, books, booths at the Farmer's market and (soon) Artisans' Marketplace. What a long great trip it's been ;-)

Marblehead Farmer’s Market – Tomorrow!

I'll be at the Marblehead Farmer's Market as a vendor for the first time tomorrow, Saturday June 6 from 9am to 12pm! I'll have my Wednesdays in Marblehead book available for sale as well as select matted prints at 30% off.  With the Marblehead High School graduation the next day, this would be a perfect time to pick up a gift for the new grad.  Also a great time to pick something out for Father's Day. I've also just received my proof for the 2016 16-month calendar.  Come by and get a sneak preview of the calendar which should arrive [...]

See the Stars at Fort Sewall

In the early morning hours of April 18, I had gone out in search of the Milky Way and returned with several images of the night sky over Marblehead.  This image was taken just after the one from the edge of Fort Sewall and before the next location at Castle Rock. I had envisioned this view of stars seeming to explode in light around the great tree at Fort Sewall and found this spot at the bottom of the small hill from which to shoot it.  It took a bit of work to bring out the stars while keeping light [...]

Late Day Light on Castle Rock

On May 12, I was out chasing clouds and ended up following them out to Castle Rock.  I arrived just before 7:00pm and found this incredible late day light bathing the huge rock formation in a golden glow.  You can see the cloud formation I had been chasing serving as a beautiful backdrop for the display of hard rock under soft light.  I only had a few moments to capture this scene before the light faded but was very happy with the results. As it turned out, I was at the Marblehead Arts Association dropping off copies of my Wednesdays [...]

The Fishing Spot

On Friday, May 29, a dense fog descended on Marblehead and I decided on an impromptu photoshoot as soon as I got home.  I started on the Neck shooting boats in the mist (I'll share that image tomorrow) before deciding to check the conditions at Redd's Pond.  I started by shooting some favorite compositions but then walked towards the street for a wider view.  As I did, I spotted this young boy walking along the path with fishing rod in hand searching for a favorite fishing spot.  I took a few quick shots as he walked in front of me [...]

A Look Back at May

The end of May has arrived and, with it, the monthly look back slideshow. At the end of the show, you'll see a slide about my Dad & Grad Sale.  Now that my second printing has arrived and I am fully stocked with books, I wanted to extend a discount for all those looking for gifts for Dads and Grads.  You can order books online or find me at the Farmer's Market on Saturday, June 6 from 9am to 12pm at the Veterans School. Plein Air Painting the Old Town House

I feel like I have fallen into a 'rut' of mostly capturing and sharing images of the water in and around Marblehead.  With that in mind, I dove into the archives and found this image of a plein air painter capturing Old Town House that was taken on June 30, 2012. The feeling of a warm Summer day spent walking along Washington Street seems to spill out of this simple image and hopefully gets your weekend off on a good foot.
