Full Moon over Brown’s Island

Today's image comes from July 2013 when I headed out to capture the full moon (aka buck moon) rising over Brown's island.  This marks the 38th image of a full moon shared on my website. On this particular outing, the moon remained mostly hidden behind a layer of haze.  This image was the best capture of the full moon as it rose over the tree at Brown's Island and as a sailboat passed in the distance. The moon has been such a common theme that I have devoted an entire gallery to images including the moon as an element.  You [...]

Waves Coming Ashore at Mooring Road

I developed a bit of an obsession with the pier at Mooring Road in 2011.  I had first discovered the pier in April 2011 and this image is one of the first I captured on that day.  I would return in the early Winter to explore the pier jutting out from the road in one of my favorite long exposure images later that year. As we approach three years since capturing this images of waves coming ashore as seen from the pier at Mooring Road, I thought it was a great opportunity to finally share the shot. Keep it Local – The Riptide

On March 23rd, I was out shooting a sunrise and then headed to Pleasant Street to capture the Warwick Theater.  I then turned to see what other local businesses I might be able to photograph and realized I was standing directly in front of The Riptide. When I decided to share this image, I turned to the Riptide's Facebook page for a bit of background on the bar/lounge.  I had no idea so much history resided here: The Riptide Lounge became a bar in the late thirties or early forties when it was known as Kylie's It is believed [...]

Last Ones Out of Marblehead Harbor

Yesterday's bright sun and relative warmth helped erase some of the lingering cold from the too-long Winter.  It reminded me that Marblehead Harbor would soon start filling up with boats and so I looked to the archive for images of some of the last boats left in the harbor. In this image from October 22nd, you can make out more than a few boats on their moorings and the subtle colors of Fall in the trees around Abbot Hall. Won't be too much longer before Marblehead Harbor begins filling up with boats for a new season...

The Warwick Theater – Then and Now

Recently, I happened upon images of London where old and new photos were superimposed drawing incredible contrasts and similarities as a result.  I remembered that I had gone out during the Winter parking ban in 2010 to capture images of the Warwick before it was slated for demolition and decided to see if I might be able to match up the modern version of that theater.  And so, on the morning of March 23rd, I headed to Pleasant Street and set up for a shot of the facade of the Warwick Theater. I found an image that came close to [...]

A Change in Plans – Wednesdays in Marblehead is Moving [April Fools]

Well, with over 900 images of the Town of Marblehead shared to date and a book forthcoming, I think it is time for a change. It always bothered me that the Wednesdays in Marblehead name didn't quite flow.  It would have been so much better if I had some nice alliteration going there as well.  So, without further ado, I bring you the next chapter in Wednesdays in Marblehead! Starting tomorrow, I will be sharing images once a week from towns in Massachusetts that begin with the letter W.  Here is the list I've come up with so far: Wakefield [...]

Frozen Moment at Castle Rock (photo and video)

Today's image comes from the dawn/sunrise photoshoot at Castle Rock on February 19th.  I've shared a few other images from this outing but hadn't yet worked on this image with a composition aimed at including the waves coming to shore and reflecting the colors of dawn on this cold morning. Immediately before capturing this image, I had switched the camera to movie mode and recorded 40 seconds of the sounds and feel of watching the dawn from Castle Rock.  Click below to watch the video for yourself and see how the final photo and video compare.

Keep it Local – Junji Sushi

One hour - that's how long we waited from the time Junji Fine Japanese Cuisine opened its doors to our first meal there.  We had passed by the opening soon sign countless times as we drove by on Pleasant Street and my kids kept asking when we might go.  The thought of a sushi restaurant in Marblehead, and one whose chef had such a strong following at his former location, was too good to believe. And so it was that on the opening night, we dined on dishes familiar and new.  The meal was excellent with fresh fish at very [...]

Flowers on Beacon Street

I'm not much of a flower photographer (with the exception of cherry blossoms in the Spring and sunflowers in Summer) but I had to stop and capture these flowers along Beacon Street when I passed them in the late Fall. With Spring officially here but without the warmth that all of us are waiting for yet to arrive, I figured an image of flowers was in order.

Leading into Marblehead Harbor

After I finished capturing the incredible sunrise that took place on Sunday morning, I made my back to the car ready to pack up my gear and head to the next destination.  As I looked back, I saw the colors were building closer to the horizon and decided to try a different composition. I walked to the float at the end of Commercial Street and found this angle from which I could use the small dock as a leading line into Marblehead Harbor.  The tighter composition made Marblehead Light into a stronger element compared to the wider and more expansive [...]
