Pink Sunset for Valentine’s Day

The February full moon (named the Snow Moon - how appropriate) was due to rise on Friday night coinciding with Valentine's Day. I was scheduled to work until 4pm and decided to throw my camera bag and tripod in the car so that I could try to get a shot of the moonrise before meeting my family for a romantic dinner at Gourmet Garden. As I drove home, I noticed clouds building and hoped they wouldn't block my view of the moonrise. Based on the projected path of the full moon, I decided to head straight to Crocker Park for [...]

Keep it Local – Artworks 5 Gallery

Another Friday and another local Marblehead business to feature on the site. This time it is one of the newest local businesses to grace Washington Street - Artworks 5 Gallery. The new gallery is unique in that it serves to showcase beautiful art but also aims to provide an environment where children can create their own works. On my first visit, I made the mistake of assuming all displayed art had been done by kids and was amazed by the talent. When I learned this wasn't the case, I was still floored by several pieces. Do yourself a favor and [...]

Dramatic Sky over Chandler Hovey Park

With three images shared so far this week all taken on the same morning of Thursday, February 6th, I figured I would add one more and make this a proper theme. Shortly after capturing Monday's image of the tree at Fort Sewall in the blue hour, I noticed the sky breaking up over Chandler Hovey Park. With the sun rising toward the horizon, light began seeping through the breaks in the clouds making for a very dramatic sky. I could not capture the immense size and power of the scene with the horizontal (or landscape) orientation I had the camera [...]

Wednesdays in Marblehead – Book of Landscape Photographs

After 5 years and with over 800 images of Marblehead shared on my site and Facebook page, I have decided to produce a beautiful 120 page hardcover coffee table book. I have created a Kickstarter campaign to help raise the needed capital for the initial book run and wanted to let you know about the project. Supporting the project at this early stage offers you the signed finished copy of the book at a significant savings over future retail prices. By pledging your support, you may choose from various rewards. If the project does not meet its funding goal [...]

Impossibly Beautiful – Fences in the Snow and the Ocean Beyond

Continuing with this week's theme of images captured on the morning of Thursday, February 6 after 10-12 inches of snow fell on Marblehead, we come to this impossibly beautiful scene. After capturing the image at Fort Sewall and then the tree lined street of Glendale Road, I noticed the clouds were lighting up and decided to head to a nearby favorite vantage point. I arrived at Bass Rock Lane to find much of the lane that extends to the Atlantic ocean beyond covered with unmarked snow. I hated to disturb the snow and so I set up a vertical shot [...]

A Canopy of Snow on Glendale Road

I have wanted to capture the classic New England scene of a canopy of trees contrasted with fresh fallen snow for years now. I had spotted this great tree lined street only blocks from my house on Glendale Road several years ago but the conditions hadn't come together until the snowfall of February 5th. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, the snow was falling too heavily during the day to properly capture these scenes and so I had gone out early the morning of Thursday, February 6. I started off at Fort Sewall and was coming home when I glanced [...]

Fort Sewall in the Snow

On Wednesday, February 5th, Marblehead received a solid snowfall with nearly 12 inches falling over the course of the day.  Given the timing of the heaviest of the snowfall, I wasn't able to photograph snow covered scenes until early the next morning. I woke and left the house just before the blue hour began and made my way to Fort Sewall.  The wet snow had clung to the trees and the still air after promised that much of it might remain to serve as a great contrast against the branches.  I arrived to find this beautiful scene before me at [...]

Keep it Local – Haley’s Market Cafe

For those who might be new to the site, I have been running a Keep it Local Friday theme for the past few years.  The goal was and remains to highlight the great local businesses that reside within the town of Marblehead.  My preference has been to capture timeless photos of the storefronts which means trying to do so without cars parked in front.  And that has meant that I typically capture these scenes at dawn during the Winter months when the parking ban is in effect. This year's Keep it Local images were put on hold as I recovered [...]

Winter comes to Summer Street

I haven't yet had a chance to photograph the after effects of the 10-12 inches of snow that fell on Wednesday, February 5 but this image was taken almost exactly one year ago on February 9, 2013.  We had a lot more snow one year ago and I headed out when the driving ban had finally lifted to explore the streets of Marblehead covered in snow. As I walked down Washington Street, I looked up Summer Street and saw the light of the sunset reflecting off the houses that neighbor St. Michael's Episcopal Church.  I walked up the hill and [...]
