Early Summer Evening over Marblehead Harbor

As this post goes live, we should be seeing the first flakes of an expected 10-12" snowfall on this early February day.  I couldn't make up my mind about whether to share an image of snow or sun this morning and turned to my Facebook page for advice.  The response surprised me with a nearly even split.  In the end, the thought of being transported (if only for a moment) to a warmer day won out and I decided to share this image taken on June 3, 2013 at 7:18pm. So almost exactly 4 months from now, it's a warm [...]

The Old Spite House of Marblehead, MA

Did you know Marblehead can lay claim to one of a few spite houses in the United States?  Spite houses, as the name implies, were built to spite neighbors for the most part.  Some are impossibly narrow to squeeze between houses and/or to serve to block light and air from reaching the hated neighbor.  The one in Marblehead easily has the oddest shape and structure but the reasons for it seem to be a bit of a mystery. The house, built in  1716, stands at the intersection of Orne Street and Gas House Lane.  It is quite narrow at 10 [...]

Calm Morning – Marblehead Harbor in the Blue Hour

On Saturday, February 1st, I woke early so I could drop off my son at the YMCA snowboarding/skiing trip to Nashoba Valley.  Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I had thrown my camera bag and tripod in the car and, after dropping him off at 6:45am, drove in search of good light. I watched the clouds as I drove and decided to shoot from the overlook at the end of Chestnut Street where it meets Cliff Street but the view wasn't quite what I had in mind.  I quickly jumped back in the car and drove [...]

Fire in the Sky over Boston

One final image to finish off this week.  This is the last shot I took after the sky exploded in color on the night of January 15.  I shared one shot from the causeway and have one or two others as the sky went through a gamut of colors before finally seeming to catch fire in this view of the Boston skyline. This shot was taken from the same vantage point - along the causeway - as the others and I figured a bit of fire in the sky was a suitable way to kick off the weekend.

Flying through the Sea Smoke

Back to the morning of January 4th and the awesome experience of capturing sea smoke rising off the Atlantic Ocean from Devereux Beach.  I had captured the sunrise over Tinker's Island at this point but the increasing angle of sunlight was backlighting the sea smoke and making for an even more impressive display. I tried to time the shots to the waves coming to shore and loved this particular image for the lobster trap encircled by water and the sea gulls that can be seen flying through the sea smoke. As incredible cold as it was that morning, it was [...]

Purple Dawn from Fountain Park

Time to go back to the archives as the cold weather and recent return from time in the sun has kept me from shooting this week. This image comes from a dawn outing in December 2011.  This was the start of a very foggy early December day in Marblehead and I had decided on a shot from atop Fountain Park to begin the day as the high tide held the promise of reflecting good morning light.  As you can see, the sky did not disappoint and the water did end up serving as a very good reflector of the purple [...]

Winter Sunset over Marblehead Harbor

I already shared one image from this sunset that took place on January 15th.  That view showed an explosion of color over Devereux Beach as seen from the causeway linking Marblehead and the Neck. Fifteen minutes before that shot was taken, I had been standing across the causeway trying to capture the last light of this Winter sunset over Marblehead Harbor.  The scene was calm and beautiful with a lone sailboat still (still!) in its mooring and soft ripples of water reflecting the pastel colors of the Winter sunset.  I thought this would be my favorite shot of the night [...]

Naugus Head from the Water

I shared an image last Friday taken from the waters around Marblehead while cruising on a friend's boat.  This image of Naugus Head was captured shortly after we left the mooring in Salem Harbor. As we headed out, the sun was starting to dip lower in the sky and was producing some great warm light on Marblehead as we passed near the shore.  The view from the water offered me vantage points I had never experienced before and, when we reached Naugus Head, the combination of warm light, calm waters and the houses peeking out from the canopy of trees [...]

Running in the Fog at Fort Sewall

We had some incredible fog on the morning of September 11, 2013.  I had started off capturing Marblehead Harbor as the sun burned through the fog.  As the sun rose in the sky, the color of the sky took on a great orange hue.  I ended up chasing that light all the way to Front Street and Fort Beach.  When all was said and done, I had over 30 images with various compositions and light to share. It's no surprise then that this image has taken a while to see the light of day.  As you can see the orange [...]
