Fall Colors and Abbot Hall

On October 26, I had headed out to capture the Halloween Race in the harbor.  After shooting the boats with their multicolored sails passing in front of Abbot Hall, I decided to head across the causeway and over to Crocker Park for one last check of the Fall colors.  I found some trees had turned earlier than others and this particular one on the left side of the screen was displaying some great color. I decided on a vertical (or portrait) orientation and tried to capture the feel of Fall against the familiar backdrop of Abbot Hall and the houses [...]

Skiff at Sunset

One more image from Saturday's shoot of the Beaver moon rising.  A skiff tied to a mooring is captured on an early November night with the waters of Marblehead Harbor reflecting the colors of sunset. When all was said and done, I had come away from this brief shoot with 3 images to share this week and two more that are now in the 'to be published' archive.  It's no wonder I can never seem to get that archive number down...

The Beach at Castle Rock

This image of the small beach at Castle Rock comes from early October when I had started my search for foliage in Marblehead.  I was able to grab a shot of the maple tree at Gatchell park and the just-turning leaves along Marblehead Neck before driving to Castle Rock. The sky was filled with clouds and a few boats could be seen in the distance leaving me to set up and grab this image just as a wave crested and reached the shore.

The Surfer on Devereux Beach

On November 3rd, the same night during which I captured the causeway and harbor under great light and a clammer in the ocean, I also found this guy surfing in the waters off Devereux Beach.  As he came out of the water around sunset, I found the human element added greatly to the view of Marblehead Neck beyond.  I captured this frame with the surfboard parallel to the ground and reflecting some light which helped focus the viewers eye on the relatively small surfer and thereby add a sense of scale to the scene beyond. With the waves, great low-lying [...]

Persephone and the Empty Harbor

I mentioned in yesterday's post of the Beaver Moon rising over Marblehead Harbor that I had arrived a bit early at the Boston Yacht Club and was keeping myself busy while waiting for the moon to rise by photographing other elements in the harbor.  I found this lone sailboat named Persephone surrounded by empty moorings and I couldn't help but capture the boat under the soft light of sunset with houses on Marblehead Neck in the distance. As my son is currently obsessed with Greek mythology thanks to the Percy Jackson series, the story of Persephone was well known to [...]

Beaver Moon rising over Marblehead Harbor

I almost forgot about the full Beaver moon rising this weekend.  I only realized it thanks to some timely Facebook posts by others and then quickly began scouting locations from which to capture the rise.  The angles the the full moon takes seem to get tougher as we get into the Winter months and I ended up deciding to shoot from the Boston Yacht Club on this particular day.  Though the moon was going to be full on Sunday, Nov 17, the conditions that night didn't seem to allow for a shot so I headed out on Saturday at 3:30pm [...]

Through the Woods and Under the Trees

Last Friday, I shared an image and asked viewers to figure out where it was taken.  That was a fun exercise and I thought I would repeat it with this view of a path leading under/through a canopy of trees.  Anyone know where in Marblehead this was taken?  Answer in the comments below.

A View of Boston from Marblehead Neck

This view really never gets old.  Though I have photographed it previously under different conditions (most recently with turquoise waters - LINK), I couldn't help but pull over on Ocean Avenue on Marblehead Neck when the clouds began to reflect the light of sunset on this mid-August night.  The small beach offered just enough of a foreground element to ground the scene and instruct the viewer that this view of Boston was from Marblehead Neck.

Clamming on Devereux Beach at Sunset

On November 3rd, I had decided to try to capture one of the incredible strings of sunsets that had been forming (and that I had been missing for various reasons).  I followed the clouds to Devereux Beach and managed to capture a nice scene of Marblehead Neck with fall colors on the trees.  If you missed it, click here [LINK]. After capturing that image, I turned and noted someone in the waters off Devereux Beach.  It took me a minute to see that he was busy clamming in the Atlantic Ocean and only a few more minutes to realize how [...]

Fall Colors on Marblehead Neck

October brought with it cool nights and changing colors to the trees in Marblehead.  I would go out periodically looking for new vantage points from which to capture those beautiful Fall colors.  On this early October night, I had decided to check some spots on Marblehead Neck.  As I drove across the causeway, I noticed this scene flash by and decided to pull over to capture it. While the colors in the trees weren't quite at peak, I was worried some coming storms might lead to a very quick and abrupt leaf loss.  The relatively calm waters helped me capture [...]
