Marblehead Harbor Filled with Boats at Sunset

Is there a better site than Marblehead Harbor filled with boats?  While the harbor can be beautiful in the Winter as well, there really isn't any comparison to the view of boats taking up every last mooring.  And if you happen to catch a nice Summer sunset, then that scene is just about perfect. This image was taken in mid-August from Marblehead Neck looking back toward the harbor.  The temperature had been a very comfortable 72 degrees with light winds and I actually had to time this shot just right for the brief gusts that would bring the American flag [...]

The Gazebo at Crocker Park

I've shared a number of images from the warm months of July over the past few days and decided to go with a more recent shot this morning.  This one was taken on October 14th when I was out scouting trees for Fall foliage images.  I had been checking on the trees at Crocker Park periodically and they had just started to turn colors on this day.  As I walked around trying to find new compositions, I stepped onto one of the rocks that can be found near the central flag pole and saw this view. The gazebo at Crocker [...]

Marblehead Light on Chandler Hovey Park

Call it what you like but, in the right light, Marblehead light is a singularly beautiful lighthouse.  This image of Marblehead Lighthouse seen on Chandler Hovey Park comes from a July boat ride/photoshoot around the waters of Marblehead.  We got to this point at just the right time and hit incredible soft backlight which bathed Marblehead Light and Abbot Hall in the distance in a soft glow.  You can just make out a few boats moored at the mouth of the harbor but what stands out is the incredible structure of Marblehead Light. With the orange light of sunset and [...]

Remembering Warmer Days in Marblehead Harbor

We just had our first sub-30 degree morning and the sunsets now take place at 4:30pm.  The first few days after daylight savings time ends are always the toughest and, as I looked for an image to share, my eyes fell upon this scene of Marblehead harbor. Taken on July 24th, I had headed across to Marblehead Neck to photograph the start of Junior Race Week.  There was little wind to work with so the one-maned optis were starting to bunch together and, while that may have been frustrating to the young sailors, it made for fantastic photo opportunities.  I [...]

November Sunset over the Causeway

We had some incredible sunsets to mark the beginning of November.  Friday's was breathtaking but I had to resign myself to enjoy it from my car as I made it home too late to get the camera and still capture those amazing colors.  Saturday was a good show in its own right but we had plans that trumped any hope of getting out to shoot...again. On Sunday night, I decided to go out no matter what.  With the end of Daylight Savings Time, that meant leaving the house at 4:15pm and hoping that the plentiful clouds that had filled the [...]

Fall in Marblehead – Peak Foliage on Brown’s Island

And so it ends...an absolutely perfect Fall day in Marblehead that began at Tedesco Country Club, continued at Ware Pond and the pond off Whittier Road, headed onto Beacon Street, now comes to a close with this view of peak foliage on Brown's Island.  By the time I reached an area from which to capture this image of peak foliage on Brown's Island, the clouds had started to build and were obstructing the sun all too often.  I had to wait for just the right moment at which some rays of light made their way through a helped illuminate the [...]

Fall in Marblehead – Through the Woods and Over the Bridge

As you have hopefully been able to see, Wednesday October 23rd offered perfect conditions to capture peak Fall foliage in Marblehead.  I started off at Tedesco, then drove over to Ware pond, headed up to the pond at Whittier Road and then came up on this scene on Beacon Street.  I actually had stopped here for the flowers that line Beacon Street and tried to find a composition that would highlight the flowers against the great red and yellow hues of the trees in the distance that had reached peak Fall colors.  As I moved further down to get a [...]

Fall in Marblehead – The Pond off Whittier Road

When you think of perfect Fall scenes, a few elements come to mind - peak foliage on the trees, water to reflect those perfect Fall hues, blue skies with a hint of clouds, maybe a bench to sit on and take in the view....oh and a fountain...definitely a fountain! I tried to capture an image of this pond last year but missed the peak Fall colors that year and ended up with a drab scene lacking most of the above elements.  On this particular morning (Wednesday, October 23rd), I arrived here at 11am after capturing the colors at Tedesco Country [...]

Fall in Marblehead – Fallen Leaves on the Path to Ware Pond

The next stop on this outing to capture peak Fall colors in Marblehead from Wednesday, October 23rd was Ware Pond.  I hadn't visited Ware Pond since last Fall and found that I had missed the peak of Fall colors in the trees that line the pond.  I decided to walk around to the rail trail and see what the path that leads to the waters edge might offer.  I arrived at this spot at a little after 10am and the sun was offering great dappled light through the trees and happened to be highlighting this collection of fallen leaves. The [...]
