Marblehead Harbor Under a Dramatic Sky at Sunset

As I mentioned in Monday's post, I had been feeling the urge to go out and shoot a landscape image on Saturday when I looked out the window and saw these great clouds forming at 7pm.  With the taciturn approval of my wife, I grabbed my gear and ran out of the house. My first stop was one of my favorite public ways - Parker Avenue.  I have shot a number of sunset images from the top of the stair leading to Marblehead harbor below and am pleasantly surprised with each outing here being different than the last. On this [...]

Long Exposure – Red Sky in Morning, Sailor Take Warning

This image has been waiting in the 'to be posted' folder since a birthday shoot on February 19th.  I had shared another image from that sunrise several months ago [CLICK HERE to view] but kept this long exposure one 'in the queue' until now. This long exposure image was taken 15 minutes before the other image (with that one showing the sun rising above Marblehead Neck).  In this one, I decided to focus on the intense color coming from the red sunrise and allow the water to smooth with the five second exposure time. As the title suggests, this image [...]

Marblehead Lighthouse Aglow in the Colors of Sunset

On Saturday, I remember feeling as if weeks had passed since I last went out to take a landscape image.  When I looked back at my archive, the real answer was that only 6 days had passed.  That being said, my last sunset was 12 days ago...okay, maybe I need help. With that feeling of a need to go out again, I looked out my bedroom window at 7pm and noted some nice clouds and light forming.  I 'convinced' the kids to watch just a bit of TV til I got home and got a knowing nod from my wife [...]

The Magnolia Tree at Our Lady Star of the Sea

Wednesday, April 24th ended up being quite a busy day for me with multiple stops during which I tried to capture the first signs of Spring.  There's nothing like those first few days in which the trees start to blossom and the feel of a long, cold Winter begins to fade. On this particular day, I had started off shooting my favorite tree in town on Washington Street and then continue around town looking for more trees in full bloom.  This particular tree intrigued me as it seemed at just the right position from which I could also capture the [...]

Gravestones and Cherry Blossoms at Harris Street Cemetery

Couldn't resist bringing out another image from my trip to the Harris Street Cemetery which I found in peak bloom at the end of April.  On this particular evening, I had gone to the cemetery in hopes of getting a shot of the almost full pink moon rising against the foreground of cherry blossoms. Before the moon could rise, I had to wait for the sun to set and, as it did, it lit up the cherry blossoms and surroundings in a great evening light.  I took a few shots around the cemetery but this one was a favorite.  I [...]

The Ocean Beckons at Devereux Beach

This image comes from the storm that came to shore on March 7th and didn't leave us until the 9th.  The Nor'Easter had incredible power and displayed it with waves that easily crashed over the causeway.  I went out as much as I could and tried to capture the incredible scenes of nature's power. By March 9th, the storm had finally pushed away from shore but its tail end continue to send wave after wave crashing to shore.  I had hoped to make my way to Devereux beach to capture the waves but Ocean Avenue had been closed due to the dangers of crossing [...]

The Great Cherry Blossom Tree on Mugford Street

I mentioned this tree in yesterday's post.  I had passed by this great big tree many times in the past but had never seen it at peak blossom.  On April 25th, not only had it reached peak, but the sun was at just the right angle from which to capture it. I started off photographing the cherry blossom tree from across the street as the sun dipped and cast long shadows on the grassy lawn.  With the permission of one of the residents of the house, I then went about checking different compositions and settled on one other image (seen [...]

First Sailboat in the Harbor

On April 25th, I headed out to Crocker Park to capture the pink moon rising over the harbor.  On the way, I had stopped to capture a beautiful cherry blossom on Mugford street (posting that one tomorrow) and I still arrived a bit early.  Though the sunset was fairly muted with the lack of interesting clouds, the novelty of a single sailboat in the harbor convinced me to grab this image. I do like the reflected light off the houses that line Chandler Hovey Park.  Just wish the lighthouse had been lit at the time...

Come Visit During the Marblehead Art Walk

The Marblehead Art Walk is a great Spring tradition put on as a collaboration between the Marblehead Chamber of Commerce and the Marblehead Arts Association.  Artists and stores are paired and, on Saturday May 11th, the doors open and the public is invited to view the art and maybe visit a store they otherwise wouldn't have thought to enter.  I've really enjoyed my participation in past art walks and am looking forward to today's event. This year, I will be at Starbucks (89 Pleasant Street) from 1-4pm where I will be displaying various photos seen in the flyer above.  I [...]

Tulips Rising Before St. Stephen’s Church

Earlier this week, I put up a number of framed, canvas and metal prints at the Starbucks where they will remain for the month and where I will be during the Marblehead Art Walk on Saturday from 1-4pm.  On my way home, I drove by the median where Lafayette and Humphrey merge into Pleasant Street and noticed the tulips had blossomed.  As I drove by, I also saw that there was a nice composition to be had by shooting the tulips with St. Stephen's Church as the backdrop and decided to return later in the week. On Tuesday, the sun [...]
