Riding the Zipper at the Marblehead Carnival

The Marblehead Carnival has come and gone but I wanted to share one more image from an outing near sunset on Saturday night.  I shared the image of the ferris wheel earlier in the week and had decided to continue with long exposure images of the rides for the rest of my time at the carnival.  I slowly made my way through the various rides until I found myself in front of the Zipper. By day, this is a pretty disorienting ride and I can only imagine what it must be like in the dark.  I decided to shoot from [...]

Abbot Hall Tower Illuminated in the Fog

Judge's Award - Marblehead Arts Association Summer Member Exhibit June 2013 On Monday, May 6th, I arrived home and noted that fog was starting to roll in.  I decided to grab the kids and my camera and head out in hopes of capturing the unique beauty of foggy scenes.  We started off on Parker Lane - me with my camera, they with an old dSLR.  The fog would thicken to the point of hiding the distant mainland and the sun at times and then quickly dissipate revealing the shores again. From there we drove up to Chandler Hovey Park and [...]

Marblehead Harbor Starting to Fill with Boats

Last night, I arrived home from work only to find a fog starting to roll in.  I quickly ate dinner and grabbed the camera and kids (my wife was at a staff meeting) and headed out to shoot some fog.  I'm happy to report that the venture was a great success - not only did I capture some nice shots of my kids but I took what maybe a top-10 all time photo for me...this is not that photo. Before taking that image, we explored Chandler Hovey park and shot - I with my camera, the kids with my old [...]

Ferris Wheel on the Last Night of the Carnival

The 2013 Marblehead High School Senior carnival came into town on Thursday and, as is always the case, brought with it cold and a bit of rain to break up the warm Spring days we had been enjoying up til then.  The weather improved over the weekend and the carnival seemed better attended than recent years.  I had little opportunity to shoot without my kids clamoring for cash but managed a sunrise session and one evening shoot. This image was taken on Saturday night.  I had arrived at 7pm and ended up parking behind Dennis Curtin and Rick Ashley (two great photographers [...]

Abbot Public Library in Spring

Spring seemed to take a long time to develop this year and when it did the trees seemed about ready to burst forth out of their Winter dormancy.  When April rolled around, I asked for suggestions on trees that were coming to bloom and received a suggestion about this tree at the Abbot Public Library.  At the first opportunity, I visited the library and found that I had missed the peak bloom with more than a few petals having fallen to the ground.  That being said, the light was incredible and, when the wind picked up just enough, the flag [...]

Best Seat for a Sunset – Chandler Hovey Park in Marblehead

I wanted to post a photo from the archive and started going back through the past few months.  Despite the recent warm Spring weather, it felt way too early for an image of snow.  I ended up at this image taken on December 15th, 21012 at Chandler Hovey Park.  I'm pretty sure this was an unseasonable warm Winter day* and I recall taking a photo of the Marblehead Savings Bank menorah a half hour earlier.  As the sun set, the clouds suggested a nice sunset was in store and I drove out to the lighthouse to see about capturing it. [...]

Something Wicked this Way Comes – Carnival at Devereux Beach

The Carnival is Coming!  I have to say that this is one of my favorite Marblehead traditions...the Senior Carnival at Devereux Beach.  Not only is it a great subject to photograph but it's amazing to bring my kids to now and know that they'll return here for years to come. In the past few years, the carnival has brought along very interesting weather and none more so than 2012 when dense fog descended.  While that may have been bad for business, I couldn't be happier for the chance to shoot the carnival grounds in the fog.  When I arrived, the [...]

Spring Comes to Washington Street

Last week, I shared images taken at Harris Street cemetery and remarked that those three trees might have taken the title from my previous 'favorite tree' in town.   Three days after taking those images and, appropriately enough, on a Wednesday, I drove up Washington Street and saw 'my' tree in full bloom. I pulled over and marveled at the tree in its setting with incredible light coming down in the late afternoon.  The only problem was the very large truck blocking half of the view.  I realized that the house was undergoing some renovations and knocked on the door [...]

The Full Pink Moon Rises Over the Harbor

On April 25th, the Pink Moon was due to rise and I made plans to try to capture it.  I use a program called TPE (the photographer's ephemeris) to plan out the location of moon rise, moon set, sunrise and sunsets.  I opened up that program on my iPad and started hunting for good vantage points.  I decided that Crocker Park would be the best location for the April full moon and headed there before sunset.  After the sun disappeared below the horizon, I started to wonder when the moon would make its appearance.  There were some clouds/haze at the [...]

Keep it Local – Shubie’s Marketplace

I've wanted to shoot Shubie's for a very long time but hadn't been able to come up with an adequate composition whenever I ventured out.  My most recent failed attempt was a close-up of the great red couch that lies just outside the doors facing Atlantic Avenue. On this particular day, I had been driving down Atlantic Avenue to scout out trees hitting peak bloom.  As I came down towards Shubie's, I again noted the great juxtaposition of Abbot Hall tower in the background immediately behind Shubie's Marketplace.  I decided to pull over as soon as I saw that and figured my [...]
