Sunrise Over the Houses of Little Harbor

After photographing dawn from Hammond Park last Wednesday, I decided to drive out to Doaks Lane and shoot Gerry Island as well as the houses that line Little Harbor.  If you have followed this site for a while, you will likely recognize this composition.  I have shared some long exposures taken at sunset from this vantage point but never thought to photograph at sunrise.  It turns out that the sun was coming up at just the right angle to bathe these houses in great light.  The image needed amazingly little work at the computer apart from removing one wayward duck [...]

The Bent Tree on Crowninshield Road

So this has to be one of my favorite trees in Marblehead.  There is something about the odd bend in it and its location on the edge of the ocean that makes it instantly appealing.  I had struggled with compositions to highlight those characteristics until January 2012 when some great clouds rolled around. As I made my way around town photographing various scenes, I drove along Beacon Street and spotted the tree against the backdrop of those clouds.  I pulled over and put on my longest lens to make sure I could get the tree as the focal point of [...]

Purple Dawn Over an Empty Harbor

Last week, I shared images of turquoise waters all taken on the prior Wednesday in Marblehead.  I thought I would start this week in a similar way with this image taken last Wednesday at dawn. I had woken at 5:30am on this particular morning and promptly looked out the window and at the weather radar to try to discern if there were any clouds near the horizon.  I couldn't tell and decided to bundle up (it was in the 20's on this early April morning) and head out in hopes of decent clouds and light.  Without much to go on [...]

Sunset over Rams and Tinkers Island

While this image was not taken during the same outing as the four others shared this week, it was also taken on that same Wednesday in Marblehead.  I had returned home and started working on the images you've seen already when the sky started to turn again and I began to wonder if we might be treated to a great sunset.  I had trouble deciding where to go but found myself at Preston beach just as the sun dipped below the clouds.  When it did, it lit up Rams and Tinker's Islands in a great reddish glow. The tricky part [...]

Dramatic Sky from Castle Rock

As I continue to share images captured on a recent Wednesday in Marblehead, we reach Castle Rock.  As I drove past Ocean Avenue, I noted that the clouds were thickening and the breaks in the clouds were coming less often.  I arrived at Castle Rock and proceeded to climb to a good vantage point from which to photograph the private beach that these homes on the Neck are privy to. Unfortunately, I reached the top just as the light faded and the ocean turned to a flat ugly blue.  I went ahead and composed this image, checked all my settings [...]

Tinkers Island and the Deep Blue Sea

Continuing this week's theme of sharing images from a single outing on a recent Wednesday in Marblehead, here is the second stop.  After shooting a short and long exposure image along Ocean Avenue, I decided to check out the view from this spot a bit further up.  Some of you may recognize this composition from a series I shared taken at dawn over the Winter.  I had actually just delivered a print from that set to the couple who live here and they reiterated that I had an open invitation to stop by in the future for more shoots. It [...]

Long Exposure – Turquoise Atlantic and Boston Skyline

Yesterday, I shared an image taken from Ocean Avenue with turquoise waters, great big clouds and the Boston skyline in the distance.  This image was taken exactly 10 minutes later.  On top of the circular polarizer, I decided to add on two more neutral density filters to cut down the amount of light by more than 99.9%.  That meant I went from a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second with yesterday's image to 357 seconds with this one! I don't think I have ever shared a side-by-side of a 'normal' and long exposure and this is easily one of [...]

Wednesday in Marblehead – Turquoise Water off Ocean Avenue

For anyone who might be new to the site or who hasn't read the About section, Wednesdays in Marblehead got the name because I typically have the day off work on Wednesdays and had decided in August 2010, to devote that day to shoot the town of Marblehead (whenever conditions allowed).  Since then, I have definitely gone out to shoot on other days and share my images every weekday so the name has lost a fair amount of its initial importance.  That being said, on Wednesday March 27, the light was so good that I came away with well more [...]

A Foggy Night on Mugford Street

Some of my favorite photos have been taken in the fog and we had some great fog in mid-February as a result of a warmup after the Blizzard.  I have a number of images from that night (some already shared) and decided to bring this one out to finish up the week.  As I made my way down Washington Street, I decided to turn around at Old Town House and look to see what Mugford Street might look like in the foggy conditions.  It turns out that the street lamps were producing great diffused light as the road curved beyond [...]

Thank You for Your Support

Last week, our community was jarred with the sudden resignation of our school superintendent who made clear that he was doing so because of a dysfunctional school committee.  At the time, two committee members were up for re-election and were running unopposed.  With two young children of my own and a desire to see them thrive in the strong public school system for which Marblehead is known, I decided to pull papers to be included in the upcoming election. By Monday at 5pm, I and two other candidates had obtained the necessary signatures to be included on the ballot for [...]
