Annual Marblehead Harbor Lighting

Less than 100 days remain until we can bask in the warmth and gaze at the beauty of the Annual Marblehead Harbor Lighting. This image was taken within 2 months of our arrival in town.  As many of you know, we moved here from Washington, DC in May 2008 when I started work as an Allergist at the Asthma and Allergy Affiliates.  I had little knowledge or expectations for the annual fireworks display having been spoiled by the show in Boston and DC in the past few years.  I decided to head out on my bike and see if I [...]

Long Exposure – Towering Facade of Abbot Hall

This past Saturday, the conditions were perfect during the day for a long exposure - deep blue skies, fluffy white clouds interspersed and wind to move everything above.  When I headed out to gather signatures on Atlantic Avenue (see yesterday's post for info on that), I also made sure to pack up the camera bag and tripod.  Immediately after finishing, I headed to Abbot Hall and walked around the building looking for a new vantage point from which to shoot.  A number of ideas wouldn't work due to the wind gusts but I finally found myself at this spot looking [...]

A Perfect Spring Day at the Eveleth School

Today's image was an easy one to pick and it has a number of different meanings. First and foremost, I'm tired of the cold and the snow.  This is the scene at Eveleth School from a beautiful (and warm) Spring day last year.  I walk my son to school here every morning and kept an eye on the trees waiting for the flowers to peak and for a nice cloud filled sky.  This was as perfect as I could have imagined and should give you hope as you walk out this morning and take your kids to school or head [...]

Keep it Local – Marblehead School of Music

In the past, I had maintained a Keep it Local theme highlighting local businesses with photos taken during the Winter parking snow ban.  For a while now, I have been posting more Experimental images on Friday which was due in large part to a dearth of images of local businesses.  As I searched for a suitable image for today's post, I happened upon this one of the Marblehead School of Music taken in early December at dawn. I had gotten to the National Grand Bank parking lot early that morning in order to photograph the Christmas Tree.  Having arrived a [...]

Crashing Waves at Greystone Beach

You know things are bad when posting an image of crashing waves after a long and brutal storm actually cheers me up and helps me forget about the miserable cold outside with snow still on the ground.  This particular image was taken on Saturday, March 9th after that long storm finally moved off but seemed to still be churning up a significant amount of wave action in its wake. I had already been to Preston Beach for a solid hour shooting the waves as they hit the wall when I decided to drive over to Greystone Beach.  The waves were [...]

Marblehead Light Under the Stars

I mentioned in yesterday's post that I had gone out to Chandler Hovey park on Sunday at sunset hoping to catch the tail end of a large coronal mass ejection with promises of auroras in the night sky.  I was fortunate that a nice sunset developed and, after capturing it, returned to the car to warm up (it was in the 30s but the wind was whipping across the water) and change to my wide angle lens.  I then set up this composition and waited. The tricky part with stars is that the camera is able to capture much more [...]

Caught in the Glow of the Setting Sun

So I had the usual long exposure photo planned for today but I just walked in from shoveling a fresh 7" of snow from the driveway and needed to see something much warmer and full of color and life. This past weekend, a coronal mass ejection (CME) occurred on the sun that managed to hit the Earth just right and set off auroras close to home.  I missed the Saturday spectacle as it took place at 5am and then decided to head out at sunset to catch the tail end of it.  I got to Chandler Hovey a bit early [...]

Old Town House Open for the Festival of Arts

It's the middle of March and far too cold outside so I went into the archive and pulled out this image from last Summer.  It's rare to have the Old Town House open its doors...let alone both of them.  But that was the case on a very warm late June day during the 2012 Marblehead Festival of Arts.  I had been at Old Town House to look at the photography works on this particular day when I noted the back doors were open.  I walked out the back and down the stairs and was happy that my camera was strapped [...]

Day 5 – Lakefront Houses at Goldthwait Reservation

So this is really another shot from Saturday or 'Day 4' but you'll have to forgive the creative license.  Fridays tend to be the place for Experimental posts and this one seemed odd enough to fit the bill.  As I mentioned yesterday, I hadn't expected to shoot on Saturday as the storm had left and blue skies had replaced it.  After a heads up text from a friend, I was out at high tide shooting waves and then headed towards Devereux Beach.  As Ocean Avenue had been closed due to the waves, I ended up at Goldthwait Reservation. As I [...]

Day 4 – Curling Waves at Devereux Beach

Saturday seemed like a normal day - wake up, play some squash, get some breakfast...the usual.  As I finished a game, I received a text from a friend with an image of crashing waves at Preston Beach.  This was high tide but I figured the storm would have left and the seas would be calm at this point.  Guess I was wrong.  I quickly headed home and grabbed my camera for another outing. I started off at Bass Rock Lane and then headed to Preston Beach where I got a cool shot with the anchor (image is 'in the queue'). [...]
